Hello,

I'm not quite sure where to start with this.. except to say that I'm overwhelmed and still hoping they'll call back to say "Sorry, we misdiagnosed you and the results are benign." I celebrated my 60th birthday this March. A few weeks before my birthday, I had my annual mammogram and received a call back a few days later that they found a change in my right breast and needed to run an ultrasound. I have had dense breast tissue for many years and have had many ultrasounds, core needle biopsies and MRI in the past 11 years, so at the time this did not alarm me. I went in for the ultrasound and was told that it looked benign and to come back in 3 months for a follow up to see if it changes quickly. I was not at ease with this information (see if it changes quickly) and went to another facility for a 2nd opinion. I forwarded the past 3 yrs mammograms to the new facility and after they reviewed them, they wanted to run their own mammograms and ultra sound, because the radiologist saw changes in both breasts. On 4/16, I went in for the 2nd mammogram & an ultra sound. During the ultra sound the radiologist wanted to do a core needle biopsy and 3 fine needle aspirations, one being a lymph node. My needle biopsies were set up for 4/24. I received the results on 4/29.. The fine needle aspirations were benign, even the lymph node, but the core needle biopsy came back as IDC. I have not received the results back yet for my bio markers, but have been told that my first treatment will most likely be surgery. I have a breast MRI set up for 5/7 and an appointment with my surgeon and plastic surgeon on 5/11. I've been assured by the radiologist that this will all work out fine, I will be okay. This was caught early. I am so happy my husband pushed me to go get a 2nd opinion. Now, I guess I just wait until my appointment on 5/11 to find out when I can have surgery (most likely double mastectomy w/reconstruction) and if I need further treatment. Any information or suggestions on what I'm heading into is greatly appreciated!

Welcome! I was diagnosed with grade 2 last week. I am thinking double mastectomy myself, but need to meet with M.D. on Weds. I am a bit frustrated today due to playing phone tag with Dana Farber for 2 days....ugh! I would like to get a second opinion from them. Good luck to you!

Your husband is a keeper! I'm sorry you find yourself here but nothing is as bad as your mind tricks you into thinking its going to be. One of the best things I did was to join the surgery sisters group for the month of my surgery, they were a Godsend. I had a BMX in October and started down the reconstruction path in March. You can do this, you're going to do great!

    Take care

Do you know how large your tumor is? Have you considered lx?

I believe my tumor is 2 cm. Is LX removing lump? If so, no, I have had 2 benign lumps/cysts removed in the past and had many core needle biopsies. I would find myself constantly worrying that it would return in the same breast or in the left.

I understand but I would encourage you to do some reading about what to expect after mx on this board from the people who have had them so you know what to expect.

I have done some reading on different cancer sites and I a pretty good idea what to expect after mx, but I will search these discussion boards for further information. I see you are in IL, are you near Chicago?
