57, first period in over a year, 5th week radiation, related??
Of course, my body is doing something else weird! No period since March of last year, 6 more rad treatments left, starting cramping yesterday and today I have a period? Is this stress related, or do I need to be worried about other body parts now?? of course everything seems like cancer:(

I'd contact my Dr. Burt then again- I went through natural menopause at 44.
-
I did call the onco and leave a message...just wondering if anyone else here has had that happen.... -
Do I understand correctly - you had not gone through menopause at 57? I can only speak for myself but I was 19 yrs post menopause when DXd at 63 so that might make a difference. I would definitely be checking it out.

To clarify, I am 57 now, have been going thru menopause process (perimeno I guess its called) for several years. My last period was March 2014, dx'd with BC in January 2015. When I met with the onco and looked at my history, hormone levels etc since it had been a year with no period she is considering me post menopausal. So this morning waking up to cramps and a period was a shock! I am hoping/wondering if the stress of radiation can cause this. Left her a message but I don't expect a call til next week and I hate worrying all weekend:(

Of course, I am not a doctor so it could be stress or rads or any thing but want to tell my experience. When I was 49, I had my last period in the month of August. August of the following year came and went as did Sept. Of course, I was told I was post meno at that point. Then October rolled in and so did my period! I had a vaginal ultrasound to rule out issues but it was fine. Then I got it again in November and then never again (I am now 60 so ten years this year) and my gyno said it was my ovaries "last hurrah" due to an estrogen surge or some such.
Jist of what I am saying? It could just be your period coming back! It will likely leave again soon if that is the case.

Thank you April485! I bet you are probably right, of course all I think of is "cancer related" but that doesn't really make sense anyway. As soon as rads are over I will be going back in for my annual pelvic/pap smear and hopefully all will be fine...

Call again and again til you get a call back. You have to be your own best advocate.

My situation is not the same, as I am only 40 and not menopausal, but I did have my period come a whole week early on my third day of radiation. I called the RO's office right away because I was alarmed. I wasn't really satisfied with the nurses' responses, but they basically said "your body has been through a lot since diagnosis, so it is probably just a stress reaction. If you go back to normal next month, don't worry about it. Otherwise call your ob/gyn." They said it could not be directly due to the radiation since they are not radiating that part of my body nor the pituitary gland.
I was also wondering if anyone else had experienced similar - had actually posted about it in the Spring Radiation Sisters forum. I was really hoping the nurses would've said something like "oh yeah, this is common; don't worry about it at all."

thanks for your post, i really do think the stress of the surgery and oxidative stress could trigger an unexpected period. My onco is out of country til monday so after talking to the nurses i will see if she wants me to have my gyno examine me next week or wait til i recover a bit from one more week of rads...
