Can doctors in NYC be recommended here?

Hi, new to this thread but since I'm currently looking for a new PS and am actually going to see someone next week at NY Presbyterian-Weill Cornell, I just wanted to say it's per doctor on what insurance they take. If you go in the hospital's website and search for the doctor, it will tell you what insurance he/she takes and if it doesn't list anything, then it usually means the doctor only takes out of network. I have insurance through the NY Marketplace and the PS takes it.

I'm 36 yo and was just diagnosed with DCIS and am also wondering which breast surgeons are recommended in NYC? So far, I've seen these names come up: Kimberly Van Zee, Sharon Rosenbaum, Freya Schnabel, Stephanie Bernik. It's all a bit overwhelming, so grateful for all the information that's been shared.
-
Hi Elleboogie1, I used Kimberly Van Zee, MD. at MSKCC She actually specializes in DCIS (and of course treats patients in all stages of disease), but she has done significant research in the area of DCIS. Besides being a brilliant academic, she is also very caring and thorough as a clinician. I cannot recommend her more highly, and have sent other patients to her, who have come back with positive feelings (even people from bco.org). Of course, one's choice of providers is very individual, and she might not necessarily be the best person for you. The only thing I should say to you about MSKCC is that they don't actually encourage doctor shopping within their facility, so if you go to one surgeon, barring major objections, you end up staying with that person.

Elie - I would also check out NYU and Lenox Hill. The BS and PS need to work well together, so if you see one they'll recommend who they work with expecially if you're going the MX route and want immediate recon. I had my BNSMX for DCIS and recon all done at NS-LIJ. I loved both doctors. It will basically come down to who you're the most comfortable with and have confidence in. Go on as many consults until you feel comfortable, and of course, who takes your insurance.

I have heard good things about van zee

Fakeboobs, we must be near neighbors: I live very close to the hospital also--and I still call it Columbia Presbyterian.
A couple of generations ago, New Yorkers used to refer to it as "Medical Center." I'd be curious to know when that passed out of popular usage.
-
oh mjh1 that's good to know about the NY state of health, my doctors office is useless at handling referrals!
larkspur I call it Dominican land 😄 my husband is Dominican and born and raised in the area. I really like it here looks so pretty with the cherry blossoms right now. I love what old school New Yorkers call things, like my husband always asks me if I was in 'the village' if I was downtown and laughs at me when I say 'Hamilton Heights'.
There's quite a group from NY posting here, great info

I don't know anyone who has been treated at Lenox Hill since it became north shore LIJ. Overall I have a positive impression of how that system is run
I am conflicted about NYP because Talmor is a rock star and my favorite doctor like ever, I like Swistle too.
But my experience of the hospital and the office staff was really problematic.
I was treated 6 years ago, so I am going to hope things have improved.
-
Cookie, I completely agree with you about Talmor. I think she is the greatest! If only she could be my oncologist, too. My relatively recent (over the past 4 years) dealings with the office staff have been fine, particularly with her assistants, first Diana and now Meagan--both have been on the ball and totally responsive
-
Cookiegal, I've been & am being treated at Lenox Hill; my breast surgeon and rad. onc. are there. I'm quite happy with the level of care I'm receiving. Please send me a private message if you'd like more info.

larkspur - just had a consult with Dr. Lerman at Lenox for a revision. He was great. Spent 1 1/2 hrs with me going over evertything in detail. -
momoschki, glad to hear it!
-
Actually it is now called Columbia University Medical Center. Its under the same umbrella as Cornell Weill but the docs usually don't practice at both
-
My PS at Columbia spent 20 minutes with me and I left feeling like I had no idea what I was going to look like! Very dissappointing
-
Well, just had a consult at Weill-Cornell Breast Center. The PS was nice but only likes to use one type of imlplant which I don't like. Waited 1 hour 10 minutes to finally be called in for exam. Definitely not the way to make a first impression. From the waiting room to the exam room, it just made me feel like I was in an ER not a doctor's office. I felt like I was a number to them.
NYU is next week. I hope that will be better.
-
I had the same experience at Columbia. I can't believe in 2015 my only option is BMX with TEs. My friend had the exact same surgery 15 years ago at a local community hospital ! How sad that things have not progressed much. My PS also showed me 2 implants and only recommended one of them. Again no options! they really need to do better....
-
this isn't from personal experience, but just observation,
NYU seems to be the most flexible and offer patients the most options, the people I know who go there swear by it
-
just had my final revision consult with Mihye Choi of NYU. I liked her the best I think, but she had the same opinion as Oren Lerman of Lenox Hill did on what would work best for me so right now they're neck and neck.
-
Mihye was on the best doctors list in New York Mahazine 2014 I looked at hair when researching surgeons for a tummy tuck!
