my friend just stopped by a few minutes ago

We like to use the easy-to-remember rule of thumb:
"Our hummingbirds are here from MOTHER'S DAY TO LABOR DAY".
The end of April has been cold and rainy in the North Country!

My sister in AR had some visiting a few weeks ago. I'm in St. Louis and have not seen one yet, but I just put feeders out yesterday. We have a thick wooded area and creek behind our house with lots of wildflowers. I love to spend time in my pool listening to birds sing and watching my "hummers" eat. I think I enjoy watching them devour nectar from the flowers more than from the feeders.

Today in the early afternoon, I saw a ruby-throated hummingbird checking out the following goldfinch and red thistle feeder.
So I hung out the following hummer feeder using crisco shortening to keep ants and earwigs from climbing down to get nectar.
I'll still have to deal with the wasps.
The hummer came to the feeder, but again I wasn't quick enough to get a photo!

I'm north of St. Louis and we saw our first one April 18th. The females have just arrived at our feeders several days ago.

The little mama above built her nest on a patio light and has been nesting for about two weeks now. She's only a few feet from our bedroom window. We can sit on the patio and she won't leave, although our two-yr-old granddaughter running around will cause mama bird to "buzz" her.

What an excellent photo!

Thanks, Teka. It's pretty intimidating to post on a thread with SoCalLisa, whose work I've admired for 7 years!

All photos are enjoyed.

We've enjoyed watching these two grow, but yesterday the nest split, and one kept falling out onto the patio tile. They're pretty big but cannot fly yet. I put pillows under the nest, and mama always came back after I returned her baby to the nest, but I knew it was going to get seriously injured. I googled "hummingbird nest repair" and read about a girl who used toilet paper, so here is my nest repair job. Hopefully, it will keep them safe until they can take off on their own! Keep your fingers crossed.

So precious, fingers and toes crossed!! ;o)

My 1st hummer photo! ;o)
A ruby-throated hummingbird on the right side of the feeder just above the perch.

Hi ladies- my friend Teka encouraged me to come over and share some of my hummer photos from the back yard this week. This is our new resident rufous, that chases all the others away!

Cute even though a bully!

What wonderful pictures. I have no idea how to post my own on here but love everyone else's.
We have fed and watched hummingbirds for years. We had to add a third feeder this summer-all hang on our front porch so we get to do lots of watching. Currently, we must have about 12-15 hummingbirds living in our front yard-way more than other years-keeping the feeders full has become quite a job! Anyone else experience a big increase in their hummingbird population this year? Just curious.

Our neighbor further up the hill feeds a lot of hummers. We only have one hummer feeder.
All Topics should have information on how to post photos.

Hi all. First post on this thread, long time follower. Yes, to labelle's question. I am using 3 qts of sugar water a day! I have 10 feeders the facilitate this with replacements every few hours. On work days (gone 16 hrs) I have to hang them all out the night before and there are only 1 or 2 partly filled when I get home! I love to sit under them and hear all the whirs and clicks they make. Rough count, usually 25 flying around at once, can have up to 8 on a feeder at a time. Mostly Anna's.

My bad boy rufous won't let any other hummer come close. But I was surprised today when a Monarch butterfly chased him away.
