Hello, I'm going have a unilateral mastectomy and I am considering DIEP flap reconstruction. The ONE THING that I can't seem to find any info about online is what to expect as far as fitness. I understand that recovery is 6 to 8 weeks, no heavy lifting obviously, but what about beyond that? How is your abdominal strength and capacity? Any yogis, runners, crossfitters, pilates practitioners, or fitness junkies out there who have had DIEP? Any lasting mobility or strength issues? Any insight? I would be so very grateful to hear about your recovery and experience and how you're doing now. Very best wishes, CFM

Hi cfm, welcome to Breasrcancer.org! We're sorry that you have to be here, but glad you found us!

Until other members post here with their own experiences and support, you may find interesting also the forum called Fitness and Getting Back in Shape, where you'll find many conversations about exercise and getting back in shape after breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Another topic that you may want to join is the DIEP 2015 thread if you want to ask ladies who have been through this type of surgery.

    Hope this helps!

I've had a hard time getting back to where I was in Pilates reformer class. Now I'm sitting out again after Stage II

I had to work on gaining my abdominal strength back after my DIEP which took a few month beyond the 6 week recovery time - but I am now more active and can do more than before -no limitations on any activity. I run, do planks etc and am more active than before.
