Testing after Chemotherapy
Finished Chemo in Feb. Was just wondering if anyone could share what types of testing do you get at your followup visits with your Oncologist. So far I have seen him twice.. three weeks after finishing chemo, blood work was done, and then 6 weeks after that and again blood work was done. It seems as though its all the same blood work that they did before each round of chemo..no additional tests. What I did notice was that my glucose level was 148.. normal range is up to 109. This is definitely high and also higher than any glucose level I have ever had. All during chemo it was always under 109. I asked him when I was there if all my results were okay and he said yes. I just looked them up on the patient portal and the glucose is high. Has this ever happened to anyone. Hard to believe becasue I have cut most all sugar out of my diet and have lost some weight due to changing my eating habits. Would have thought it would have been in the normal range.

hi Thinkingpositive. I also saw my MO 3 weeks after my last chemo and then 6 weeks after that. I will see her in June for a diagnostic mammo and I asked for an ultrasound too which my RO ordered for me. My MO does bloodwork every time I see her. My glucose rose during chemo. Once I think it was at 125 - really freaked me out, but nobody said anything. My glucose level was always in the 70s. My last bloodwork showed it had dropped back down to 78. Maybe you could call your MOs office and tell them you are concerned. A nurse will call you back and advise you what to do if anything.

Thanks Nancy... just scared me a little since he said all test results were normal when I was there and then to see that number on the patient portal. Looks like I am seeing my MO the same as you did.. so that makes me feel better. I also just had a diagnostic mammo and ultrasound of my good boob - went to ob/gyn to have her examine me, since I don't trust myself anymore. She said since I was so concerned and nervous she would send me for the followup since it has been six months since I was diagnosed. Thanks again for responding and hope you are doing well.!!

I know during my chemo, my sugar ran really high. I think it got up to 211. I think they said it was due to the steroids? Mine usually runs right around 100. It returned to normal though as soon as I finished chemo. Also, regarding blood work...My MO does labs at every visit and it is the same tests each time. You might want to check with your GP about your glucose reading. My MO never said anything to me about my high results. It seems they just concentrate on results that pertain to cancer and leave the rest up to your regular doctor. A good example of that....my mother had a visit with her breast surgeon (she is also a breast cancer survivor) when she had a bad cold. She starting coughing during her visit and he said, "You need to see a doctor about that cough."

Thinking Positive, I finished chemo 11/25, and surgery on 12/15. I finished rads three weeks ago. I see my MO for follow up 4/28 to see what's next. I called to get orders for my CBC and I was told that she would order it later. OK, but my appointment is 4/28. How do we review them after the appointment? I am so confused..............and I also asked about scans and I was told that they would be ordered before chemo. WTH?
I now have 16 different Doctors, every side effect, every pain is treated by someone else. Co-Pay!

How do I know what kind of blood tests that they should be running?

I'm T2. During chemo my glucose ranhigher than my insulin pump and I liked. I mentioned to the nurses, they cut the steroid back. That is a sure way to raise bg.
Tests, just blood draws. Always the same, you might ask to have your vitamin D3 checked. If you will be doing an AI, you will probably be told to take D3 and calcium for your bones.
And you should have a DEXA done before starting, so that can be monitored. Easy, painless, don't even need to undress!!!!
