homemom, try a imak active glove from drugstore. Maybe 25 bucks. Mild compression .works for some girls in a pinch.Lots of deep belly breaths throughout day.

I think there is an Isotoner active glove too. It gives mild compression. I haven't tried it, but I'm sure I've seen one of the other ladies recommend it for someone. -
Hows everyones exercise going? I wouldn't mind trading some snow for mozzies...any takers? Some months ago I did a buttock strain and its taken ages to come right. Well finally I'm almost back to my old speeds but been doing my 2 mile for a while, so that's good. I had issues with my treadmill and that went back. I really want another one sometime. Meantime it's back to 100% road time.

Just back from my 2 hour water aerobics class. Each week the hip hurts a little more, but May 26 is coming, and I will have a new one. Until then, keeping the rest of the body as strong as possible. Love that we had snow Monday, and some predicted for tomorrow, but it melts fast and then bounces back into the milder temperatures. Spring is almost here in Ohio

Laural, you must be excited and frightened, and good for you that you're keeping up with your exercise as you wait for the surgery day.
As to my exercise: I've been regular in my strength training at the gym, but slacking intentionally on the cardio, as I continue to do a wait-and-see on whether my knee issues will resolve with rest and the recommended strength training to build up surrounding muscles. Also waiting to hear when I'll be scheduled for a hip scope to repair a torn labrum in my hip joint...arrrrrrgggggghhhhhh! I WANT a bionic body that doesn't fall apart any more!

The NTC where I joined has several water aerobic classes and yoga as well . I'm in a holding pattern until I see what I CAN do without getting some sort of flare up. Plus I have recon surgery next month. I didn't see the IMAK glove at Walgreens so I bought their brand of a hand support glove. It really hasn't done much. I'll look at the two drug stores near me, or should I try Wal-Mart in stead??

Homemom Google: imakproducts.com there is a tab at the top that says where to buy. I believe Purple used the ones that had silicon grip dots on the palms. I think the other ones were not as good.
Carol. You tried Tommy copper sleeves didn't you? I just googled Tommy Copper and they have the gloves which I didn't know. Maybe this would work for Homemom. Anyone tried them? Carol thinking of you and your dang legs! ugh bummer. Yes bionic parts please
These gloves are just to get you over the hump until you get prescribed glove/gauntlets.

Hugz, the problem with athletic compression sleeves is that they don't provide gradient compression, i.e. more at the wrist and progressively less up toward the armpit, to move lymph upward. At least that's what I'm told.

After several false starts, a couple of melt downs and brain freeze I finally was able (with help) to use my flexitouch for the entire hour today and I kept my compression sleeve on for 2 hours before feeling like I would choke to death. I know that doesn't make sense but it's how I feel. I'm getting ready to dance like no one is watching because, no one is. New goal: do it again tomorrow.
My hubby sat with me for the entire hour of the Flexitouch to be supportive. This is his description of what he saw: "Looks like your arm is being consumed by a giant brown caterpillar, it's swallowing you" I appreciate his support but will be using James Taylor and Carole King for support and entertainment tomorrow.

I eat my breakfast and do all my computer reading while I use my Lymphapress. It becomes easier as time goes on and creates a quiet time in an otherwise busy day. Think of it as one hour to do what you want to and put the machine in that area.

Carol, did u get hip scope date. I have been trail walking for last 4 days but have had to take it slower and stretch outI my shins

Hugz, hip scope will be on May 4. I'm madly preparing, stepping up my exercise (you know, so I can get the one step forward before I have to take the two steps backwards during recovery!), and preparing food for the freezer, so DH doesn't have to worry about how to feed us during the first few weeks. And I'm grimacing over the pokey spring, because I sure won't be gardening in May and maybe not much in June. Wish I could get some of the spring garden trimming and cleanup and first round of weeding done before kneeling and squatting will be out of the question!

Carol, maybe you should just let the garden rest this year. You to, although I know your itchy to get your hands in the soil. So sunny last couple days but busy with paperwork. ugh

Hugz, I might rest, but the weeds sure won't. I'm lining up some young folks who look for odd jobs, hoping I find a good person or two to help out. DH does the heavy work and I do the fine tuning, and he's not patient enough for my pruning and trimming and weeding--plus he has his hands full with the rest of the maintenance. Oh well..can only do what I can do, shouldn't worry about the rest. That's true about so many things in life, and so very hard to reconcile to. This week and next I'm doing a lot, to get behind me what's possible before I'm on crutches and in PT.
And exercising! I've been on my bike (bike mounted on a thing-y to be able to use it indoors) every day, for 30 minutes. Not hard on the hip, and only somewhat annoying for the knee.

Carol, I have a suggestion. You might just get your crutches early, and practice with them under the supervision of the PT. Make sure they have the right kind and size that you need. Get your lengths adjusted and get your technique down before dealing with the post-surgical pain. See what you might have to do with bandages or garments on your LE arm beforehand.
I cannot overemphasize how important it is to deal with trained, competent professionals to prevent any kind of problems. Having been an above-knee amputee for 19 years at the time of my mastectomy, it never occurred to me that removing a pound or so of tissue from my chest could lead to such problems. If I'd paid attention from the beginning, I might not have to wear sleeve and glove and bandages for the rest of my life. Of course it's small compared to cancer, but damn. Sorry, didn't mean to rant. Hope this helps.

Amy, I'm scheduled to go to a crutches how-to session with the PT department of the hospital, and I will take them home--as well as a walker--to practice on for a week before the surgery. Your suggestion is spot on. Thank you!

Carol, I had foot surgery a couple of years ago. The started to hand me crutches and I asked for a walker. Much less stress and insurance did not care. Want my walker?

Proud, I intend to leave the hospital with both walker and crutches, to keep my options open. I've already discussed this with the orthopedic surgeon, and he's on board with whatever I prefer. The PT clinic where I'll go to learn to use crutches and walker is managed by my LE therapist, so I'll have good advice on making the best of this. Thank you for the offer! We have several walkers in family closets, formerly used after surgeries.
Speaking of walkers, crutches, and all, I think Laural's surgery was around now, no? Hip replacement, I think she posted. Laural, if you're keeping up with this thread, I hope all's well and your spirits are up!

I went passed a house with a yard sale set up on the front lawn, it included 4 or so walkers! Guess not unusual to have them left over! I freaked when they started to hand me crutches~~ walker was fine

Have you girls seen the rolling walker(includes seat) that has padding for you to rest your forearm on and push with forearm instead of hand, They give it to people with hand arthritis that needs walker. This might be easier with LE as long as you dont put your full weight on it. they raise the height to above waist level i believe. Maybe that wont work with your surgery. just a suggestion.
Also pad those underarms on the crutches. yup that foam we use for wrapping would probably work if wrapped around enough times.

I have seen some pretty fancy walkers at my gym used by folks doing physical therapy
sort of hoping not to need any of those, currently issues are good old pesky sinus polyps so that should not affect any LE stuff

I have been out of commission with a stubborn case of bronchitis for 2 weeks. Today I started an inhaler and breathing treatments in hopes of getting the lungs all settled down before my surgery at the end of May. I have 5 weeks left of work to hobble through. It's a good thing the kids I work with are so cute. As I was walking one of my first graders down for therapy (and coughing), he said "I see you are not a fan of coughing." They keep me laughing. I also have all my equipment lined up for after the hip replacement. So hoping to get out in my garden at least a little this weekend as spring has arrived here. Also hope to get back into the pool next week as I have had to take time off to cough...nope, I am definitely not a fan of coughing

Laural, dealing with what one of my young friends calls 'coughitis' is horrid enough at any time, but it must be particularly odious when you just want to clear the health decks, getting everything ship shape so you present for surgery and subsequent recovery as strong and healthy as possible. How frustrating! I am sending you lots of positive thoughts for the breathing to clear asap.

Ok, I have walked a little but not enough. I will get the lead out and walk dog tonight. I have been gardening which is my big excuse for exercise.....welll it is!
