Trvler ... thanks for posting the article ... and mods for making the link "hot."  I was so sorry to read this, she seems like a really neat person.  It's a good thing she sought a second and third pathology consultation.  I wish her well and hope for the best possible outcome.

I did see the news story today. It sounds like she has a good prognosis going forward. My only slight cringe is I hope she doesn't jump immediately on the pink Komen bandwagon. I am weary of celebrities newly diagnosed with bc suddenly become a spokesperson for the disease. It was refreshing to watch the documentary "The Emperor of all Maladies " where the subject of cancer was discussed at length over three hours by expert medical doctors in the field rather than a few sound bites from someone jusy beginning to educate themselves on the matter

Dang! I actually met her (and the husband) at a wedding summer before last. She is a very nice lady.

Momine I love how you refer to Tom Hanks as 'the husband'! Cracking up!

For me it's all the People magazine articles. My fight against BC. The stories are all the same. Very homogenized versions. No talk of chemo or hot flashes or itchy scalps or anything like that. It's all about the supportive family. I guess it feels contrived or something. LIke we perfect celebrities even do cancer better than you. These comments are not directed at Rita or any one person.

Trvler, well said; I agree with your post. Rita Wilson definitely seems like a genuinely "real" person amidst the Hollywood celebrity types, and I wish her the very best. That's why I'd hate to see her heading down that "homogenized highway" not really saying much of anything that hasn't already been said

Just read the blurb on CNN....

So great that she has the means and the support and blah, blah....but agreed. That a large portion of women in the public eye who go on to have mastectomies also have reconstruction...why can't there be some who talk about the other route and that not having (big) boobs does not equate to femininity. Sure wish there were some willing souls out there.

It was scary that CNN reported that she had had a biopsy that was negative but a friend told her to get a second opinion, which showed it was in fact cancer. Stupid, sneaky ILC!!

The fact that she says "I will make a full recovery..." ugh...what does that even mean in terms of bc to those who are not as savvy as we here on the board are.

It means she is hopeful she will make a full recovery. It doesn't matter how positive you are, she will be just like the rest of us, watching and waiting!!! Hopefully she will fine, but there is no guarantee and it doesn't matter how famous or rich you are.

Kayb, but don't you agree that in person, as a couple, he is most definitely "the husband"? She seems far more lively, engaged and happening, or at least she did that day.

Divine, I hear you on the pink ribbons. Wilson seems to have both feet on the ground, so one may hope she steers clear of the pink pom-pom rallies. I also fervently hope that she doesn't put out one of those Joan Lunden "how I beat cancer and became a fabulous person" memoirs, complete with a spiffy web site offering tips on how to look your best and make "delicious" smoothies during chemo.

At least she specified "lobular" - so many people announce it simply as "breast cancer" when we all know there is way more to a diagnosis than that.

Sorry she's going through this, and wishing her the best.

I really admire her for providing the details. We can all learn from each other. . . and do!

Did anyone see the Today Show when they talked about Rita Wilson?  They had a doctor talk about how many pathologies are incorrectly read.  It happens more often with DCIS types.  I think it was 1 in 4.  I did get a second opinion on my second breast cancer pathology only because it was so rare (pleomorphic).  Doesn't this sound the trumpet of alarm for our breast cancer sisters?  Shouldn't we be pushing everyone to go get that second opinion on the pathology results?

I was glad she specified ILC, too.

Nice to hear that they are nice people.

A report came out about a month ago (or so) talking about how path reports on DCIS and LCIS are often wrong. I believe it was posted on BC.org and discussed. Let me know if you want the thread. I will look for it.

I guess her message is second opinion. I also caught the tail end of the thing on Today. I think to those you don't know the difference between DCIS and LCIS, and invasive, it could be confusing.

Trvler,  I would appreciate the link to that discussion.  Thank you.  I thought that a pathology slide was a black and white observation.  But now that I have read the Today Health article, I am beginning to think I should get a second opinion from an expert on anything to do with serious medical issues.

I sent a request to the mods. I can't figure out where it is. I wish we had a 'general topics' area for stuff like that. I see lots of people missing threads they might be interested in because they are not looking in specific areas and it isn't obvious where they will go.

I don't think I can find it and the mods don't seem to know where it is either. It is kind of like finding a needle in a haystack but here is a link to an article about the study:

And it looks like maybe this is the thread you're referencing that you began when the story first came out?

The Huffington Post is an American online news aggregator offering news, healthy living, women's interests, etc.
Yesterday, they announced they are teaming up with Rita Wilson [Her Twitter feed] to tell stories of people who have overcome tragedy or adversity.

Since Rita was diagnosed with ILC recently, I thought it may resonate with her to hear stories from some of you with ILC success stories.

I agree about recon. I am a little tired of the pressure for women to rush in. I am 42 and I want to wait to decide. I had LHS mastectomy and then before RHS they have put me straight on chemo and so far I like the feeling of a flat chest over my good sized boob so I need to now see if my self image can adjust to what feels better over what society pressure puts on me. Hubby can't bear the thought of too many more operations so hates the thought of recon. There was a sweet movie with Pierce Brosnan and Tryne Dryholm I think it was called love is all you need, and it showed a women lead with a mastectomy and a wig and I loved it before diagnosisand LOVE it more now!! There needs to be more.
