I am curious how many people had lumpectomy and then had mascetomy, is the only reason you ended up with mascetomy is because it came back?

Sometimes the area of concern turns out to be bigger than thought and after a couple of retries they still can't get clean margins on the lumpectomy

I did a lumpectomy first because I could not decide on whether I wanted a mastectomy right away. After I completed chemo I decided to go ahead with a bilateral mastectomy. It was not a recurrence, according to my pathology report from the BMX no breast cancer was detected in either breast.

I couldn't make up my mind so I did lump first. I had close margins and was going to need another lump after chemo. Having more time to think about it and my recon options I did mx with DIEP instead. Very happy with the results.

I did the lumpectomy first (on each side). They could not get a clear margin on the right side. I had one cyst drained at the time of lumpectomy &3 more removed. I did a lot of research. A. Lot.

After reviewing everything, I decided that if they could not clean up that margin...it was very close to the skin...in the second surgery, I did not want to have a third surgery to do the mastectomy.

I did a bmx, and I have not regretted it for a minute. I had dense breasts, so I was concerned future mammograms may not work. Certainly, they failed me before my diagnosis. I was also concerned with all of the "activity" going on, it would just be a matter of time & I would be dealing with another biopsy to see if I had cancer again. Not interested.

After 10 months, I just started reconstruction & am excited to finalize my boobs and get the check out of Cumberland.
