Recurrence Rate After Chemo

Options

I have been told after chemo you do not typically see recurrences until 3 years out as it would take that long for measurable results to show. This would be new tumors or older ones to small to show at dx. Can anyone weigh in on the validity of this theory?

Well, after achieving PCR after chemo, LX and 33 rads- I've been dx with a local recurrence only 17 months after completing rads. However I have an extremely aggressive subtype of triple negative. I was so sure I had this beat. :-(

I think it really depends on what type and how aggressive your cancer is. Mine seem to pop up overnight. I was checked by my MO and her "fellow" in November- neither of them felt anything and yet at the beginning of Jan I detected a lump- at the time of new dx 2 weeks later it was estimated to be over 2 cm big. After MX it was 3.2.

jojo2373, I would think it would depend totally on the person, the type of recurrence and the cancer.  We think of "breast cancer" as one disease, or maybe three diseases (ER+, HER+, NNN) but really it's hundreds of types and they all behave differently.

On top of that some "recurrences" are local, some regional, and some metastatic.  I'm not sure which the theory is referring to.

It varies...there are so many variables. I had a 1.9 cm, node negative tumor, with an oncotype of 16, and did chemo because of my age. Despite taking Tamoxifen religiously afterwards, and also being aggressive and having BMX, I had a recurrence in 2 spots 15 months after finishing chemo. I am on the thin side, eat very healthy, and exercise daily. It is truly a crap shoot. I know my chances of recurring when and how I did are about 1 in 500...well I was the one. And so I deal with it, hit is hard again, and and move forward. I try to be vigilant about checking, but I try to minimize worrying about factors beyond my control.
