Can a malignant mass could be determined by ultra sound?

Hi yesterday I had a mammogram and ultrasound done on my right breast. I have a lump at 12:00 on my outer breast, it is long and narrow. I am 34 years old and everyone I dealt with yesterday seemed off. And I felt like I got "sugar coated" answers. When I first went in the tech said if the mammo was fine and they could see it was a cyst I would be on my way. The next thing I know they couldn't tell so I needed an ultra sound. Then I went to ultra sound where they said the dr would be in to either look again or just let me know. The dr came in and said go ahead and sit up, I don't know what it is. Wait what? Then why not look at it again? Then he said I will need a biopsy. So then he left and the tech stayed and I had some tears in my eyes, she said something to me and started crying, and gave me a hug. I just thought, she must have had a bad day. Then it was like wait why does she have more tears then I? Am I the one having the bad day? So after that she left and i am baffled, I see a paper lying there and in big letters I see Malignant mass vs Cyst. Then I see my name. Not sure if that was the reading from my mammogram or the ultrasound...My question is how often do they use "malignant mass" and can they determine that from an ultra sound? After I saw that my mind went to the worst...

Misst34,
First sorry you are hear and upset. The waiting is the absolute worst part of all of this . There is no way to be certain until you have a biopsy. Hopefully that can get that scheduled soon. You have come to the right place here , we have all been through it and can given you support, PLEASE stay off of google as there is a lot of incorrect information out there . The only thing that helped me with the waiting was my oncologist finally telling me "we have to have all of the test results in before I can make a determination about the right course of treatment for you ".

woos meant to write sorry you are HERE versus hear :=)

There are certain characteristics that can be seen on ultrasound that can suggest a tumor is cancerous. Here is a link to an explanation ultrasound
I had read the "taller than wide" description before my ultrasound, so when I saw mine looked like that, I knew it was bad. My radiologist did tell me it was cancer before the biopsy results came back, but in my case even the image on mammo looked so obviously wrong that I didn't need her to tell me, I already knew. I am sure that is not always the case and biopsy is the only way to know for sure what you are dealing with.
I wish you good luck. Try not to worry till you have all the facts. If it is cancer, understand that there are many types and stages of breast cancer and the treatments vary.
My mom recently had an ultrasound of her uterus. The report did use the term "possibly malignant". Her biopsy showed stage 1 of a pre-cancerous condition, so while its a problem, it was found early and is easy to treat.

The first thing to do is take a deep breath. Yes, breathe. I was in the same place you are nine years ago. I kept telling myself that they couldn't tell if it was cancer from a mammogram, but the radiologist just said, "If you were a member of my family, I would tell you to go see your surgeon." (MY surgeon? Does everyone have a surgeon but me?) Yes, it did turn out to be cancer, but they caught it so very early. I thank God for that radiologist's good eyes and her good advice. And yes, I went through the lumpectomy, chemo and radiation, but the last two were more cautionary than anything else.
debiann is correct -- wait until you have all the facts before get worked up. Until you hear otherwise, you are healthy. Get the facts...all of the facts...about your situation, then take it one step at a time.

My radiologist knew that the images were consistent with cancer and told me so. But, she waited for the biopsy to definitively say it was cancer. I would wait for the biopsy results before you get all worried and all.

Hi,
Try not to worry although I know it is easier said than done. I was in your shoes almost 3 years ago. I was called back for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. While the radiologist didn't come out and say what he was seeing was cancer, he did tell me, "If you were someone I loved, I would want that biopsied." I had my biopsy the Thursday before Easter that year and got the call that it was indeed cancer the day after Easter. I think radiologists can tell with a great deal of certainity if a lump is highly suspicious to be malignant, but a biopsy is the only way to be 100% sure. My lump was very small and subtle so I will be forever grateful to the eagle eyes of my radiologist.
Hang in there! Let us know when your biopsy will be. We will be in your pocket.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I am trying not to worry, I have to say posting here has really helped so thank you so much! My biopsy is on Tuesday and I have an apt with my surgeon on Thursday. Thank you again for your positive thoughts and kind words, they were very much needed.
