I am 42 years old. I have level 3 dense breast so my Doc sent me for ultrasound. The facility I go to has the newest ultrasound machine that is called SOFIA. You lay face down and the machine circulates around the breast taking a couple hundred ultrasound images on each breast. They then ended up having to do regular ultrasound to take measurements on the cysts, mostly tiny, 2 & 3 mm with a 9mm cyst being the largest listed. They listed me as having eight cysts some on left brst and some on right. Some simple and others complicated with some debris floating in them. They didn't seem to concerned about them . They did also find a 5mm x 6mm non palpable lump at the 12o clock position on right breast. They said it was solid with smooth edges but looked slightly taller in one spot that wider so they listed it as a 4. Just had a vacuum ultrasound core biopsy for this lump. Should I be concerned about having so many cysts? The tech doing the US said I had difficult breasts with lots of stuff going on in them. She was very nice about it and she was great ,has been doing imaging for 30 yrs. So I am getting the feeling they will want to do more ultrasounds in my future to check them . My digital mammogram I had the week before came back clear with the letter saying it found nothing on the mammogram. Now after the ultrasound I am being told I have lumpy bumpy breast with lots of cysts and a solid lump. And now waiting to see what this 6mm is going to be. Very nervous.

I understand you feeling anxious. So many wonderful ladies here to help you get through the wait. Where do you live? Curious since you have the newest ultrasound machine. I am wondering if we have one close by my neck of the woods.

Dear stacienl73, welcome to BCO.You may find articles on our main site of interest regarding US and dense breasts.

Please read Breast Ultrasound May Help Younger Women Avoid Biopsies, from our main site. You may have denser breast tissue due to your age (not a problem or bad thing) but Ultrasounds can get a view that mammograms can't in those breasts.

We wish you all the best for the future. May your lumps all be benign.

the machine is at Womens Imaging center in Saratoa Springs N.Y. If you Google SOFIA ultrasound you can see what it looks like. I don't think there are to many in the U.S. yet.

Hi there...I totally get the cyst thing. I've been having mammos for the last 8 yrs...all due to cysts...which aren't related to Cancer. i just had an US done in my good breast where they found a 5cm cyst plus 12 others. I've had cysts actually pop during a mammo. In my opinion I think the problem with cystic breasts is that for me I started getting relaxed about them as "oh...it's just another cyst". I think if you feel a bump the Dr should know about it...and regular screening is a must

Nurse just called. They already have the results from the ultrasound guided va biopsy and the lump was found to be fibroidenoma. The taller than wider diagnosis was what scared me ,but I guess benign and malignent identifiers can overlap. I will meet with on obgyn next week to go over it all and see if they will want me to meet with a surgeon to remove the lump or leave it. I will also probably go back in six months to re check the cysts that were seen on the ultrasound.
