Ultrasound: Do I need to make an appt with a breast surgeon?

A little background: I'm 35 with three kids and I am still breastfeeding my 10-month old. Two months ago my daughter scratched my right breast with her sharp little nails while nursing. The scratches got infected, and I also had an upper lateral small lump. I'm not sure how long the lump was there beforehand but that's when I first noticed it. After several weeks of trying to treat the infection with topical antibiotics, I went to my GP. She prescribed antibiotics and felt the lump. We thought it was probably related to the infection.

A few days ago I checked the lump again. It felt bigger, which my husband confirmed. I also felt a hard lymph node near my armpit. So back to my GP I went. She agreed it was larger and fixed and scheduled me for a mammogram.

This morning I went to my appt, which is in a town 30 minutes away, but the radiologist wouldn't do a mammogram on a breastfeeding woman especially what would essentially be a baseline mammogram. They won't do them until a woman has stopped nursing for six months. So I got a sonogram instead. My GP's nurse called with the results saying there was nothing to worry about, and that the radiologist thought it was a lymph node and some fibrous tissue. I will have another ultrasound in six months and a mammogram when I am finished nursing. I am also getting a copy of the sono results later this week.

The breast center would like me to come in for a high risk assessment because my grandmother had ovarian cancer and my aunt had premenopausal breast cancer. I want to go to a clinic closer to home though. So I am wondering if I should make an appt now at the Women's Clinic in my town to get evaluated for risk and to have a consultation with a breast doctor or wait until I need a sonogram in six months and a mammogram. What do you think?

I have done a lot of research and cannot find anything on "fibrous tissue." Does anyone have experience with fibrous tissue? Is it something I should get a second opinion on right away or can I wait?

Thanks so much!

Etta, I am glad you have found this website, and I hope you get answers to your questions soon.I did not have fibrous breast tissue, I am sure someone can help answer, I am bumping your question back up to the top of the active thread list, hopefully some one will chime in soon. I am glad your sonogram came out good for you, thats great news.

Etta, Fibrous breasts is a generic term for a number of non malignant breast tissue changes. I think, given your family history, you owe it to yourself to visit the breast center. The speciality centers have much greater experience with complex clinical situations.

Thank you, Meadow and Sons3! I am not particularly worried about the sort of generic term the radiologist used. I just wish it could be more specific. Or maybe I wish that I had something easily explained like fibroadenoma or a cyst. :)

I am definitely going to make a consultation appt with the breast clinic in my town. And I got a call today from my primary GP who wants me to come back in in two weeks. So I made an appt with her and will go from there.

Thanks again. I am so glad to have found this forum.

Just wanted to check back in here. I had another ultrasound and diagnostic mammogram. Both showed nothing in the area the lump can be felt, but the nurse and radiologist suggested I see a surgeon since the lump was palpable. My GP agreed.

I saw the surgeon on Friday, May 8. I really liked her. We didn't really talk about all the possibilities the lump could be, but I did get more information about my initial u/s. The lump itself is not the enlarged lymph node. That is actually in another part of my breast.

She did a quick biopsy in the office. I go back in Wednesday, May 13 for the results. I will keep you posted.

Thanks for the update, and hoping and praying for benign results. Sounds like you are in good hands
