incredibly painful nipple from dye injection
Has anyone else had this problem?? I had a lumpectomy Mar 12 and of course, the dye injection right in the left nipple. It has been incredibly sesitive ever sine. I am in my scond week of radiation and now have an infection that is being treated with antibiotics. The nipple is hard and oh so sore--yet the Dr doesn't seem concerned or the techs--just tell me to give it more time. Hurts to wear a bra but hurts more without one. Just hurts all the time. Have tried the radioplex and cortisone cream to no avail. Even ice packs do not help. Anyone have any suggestions on where I go from here?? What else can be used to treat it?? And how long it might last?? I would rather go thru major surgery than have that injection again. Would appreciate any help you can give me as this is so irritating to have all the time, still wearing a bra to bed as it hurts less if I roll on it or shirt touches it.

Hi mickeezma, I finished rads two weeks ago, but I had a mastectomy so no nipple issues. A good thing for me I guess. But I am healing up really fast, and almost all of the peeling skin is now gone. I still have weird zingers, but less frequent. The skin is just really dry. I had Radigel sheets for the burns, and they really cooled it off. Not sure if they would help you. But ask the nurses or techs at radiation to help you. The light is at the end of the tunnel on this one, I just hope you find some comfort.

Hello: Sorry you have to experience such pain too...my areola was cut out so doctor can take tumor from that angle...so my areola and nipple does hurt....if you have large breast like me (38D), please consider buying a 100% cotton nursing bra, where the front flaps can open and fold over...I didn't wear any bra after surgery. It was OK but by the 4th day, it was hurting like crazy so I temporarily wear a bikini top until my sister suggested buying these nursing bra. I ordered size 38D, and washed it before wearing.Today, after wearing it, my right breast get support, and the flap down on the right side of bra stop the friction on my nipple. Immediately, I felt the pain in my breast and nipple stopped. The bra is so very comfortable. I used to walk around the apartment with my left hand supporting my right breast. So I am glad of my sister's suggestion.
Also, not sure why you have radiation so soon after surgery and your breast is so raw...NO WONDER you are hurting like crazy.....My Dr. said I can have radiation 3-4 weeks after surgery to let my lumpectomy heal a little...Could you ask the same of your doctor?
I've been reading about post lumpectomy radiation and most literature states 3-4 weeks after surgery, not right away... !!!!

one more thing...please buy either 100% emu oil or Burt Bees Mama Bee Body Oil. Apply these liberally to your post radiation breast every day when you get home...a few of my friends have used it ,and said it stopped the stinging, burning sensation on the breast.
You can get these at Walmart.com and get it shipped to your home. You don't neeed to spend money on expensive lotions and cream...

hi - I don't have the Same issue, but am recovering from nipple reconstruction, and have to keep pressure off the new nips for a while. Today, I bought nipple shields in the nursing section of toys r us, Maybe something like that would help keep anything from touching your nipple while it heals.
