I had a lumpectomy thursday. The anesthesiologist injected benadryl too fast. It freaked me out. My heart started racing. I was scared. Then i started feelling a sense of intense doom as they wheeled me to the operating room. I felt i was gonna die. All the dr. Said was oh thats just the benadryl. Has anyone else had this experience?

LFM, I am so sorry you had this awful experience. Not something you need when going into surgery! I have had a couple of bad drug reactions, not specifically Benedryl, but I know how frightening, it can be.

I hope you are feeling better now. Let us know how you getting on.

I had the opposite effect to Benadryl.  The minute they start injecting that thing, I am out for the next 2 hours.  This happened each time I had Taxol (I had it for 12 times).

Im feeling much better now!! I had never had to go thru a surgery. And that experience with the Benadryl Injection being pushed too fast caught me by surprise.

Its about 7 days post surgery. My breast is feeling a little swolen and sore. I hope it is healing ok. Next week I'lll go back to see doctor for follow-up pathology report.

Im so thankful we are all here for each other to ask questions and share our feelings and experiences with each other.

I had that reaction when I was getting benadryl as a pre med while doing taxol chemo. They had to slow down the infusion which helped a bit.

Yes I had a bad reaction to the Benedryl pre-meds early on in my chemo treatments. Dr. prescribed 50 mg of Benedryl for pre-med, as soon as the nurse started it in the IV I felt it hit me. Had like an out of body experience, could not sit still, felt like I wanted to jump out of my skin. So Dr. lowered the dose to 25 mg, still had the same reaction at the next treatment. So on third one, the nurse said I know how to fix this, she gave me 12.5 mg slowly in the IV. Then gave me the steroid, then flushed the line, then gave me the other 12.5 slowly in the IV. Wow, this did the trick. No jumpy feelings, or feeling my mind racing, felt so relaxed and calm. So they have put these instructions in my chart for any future Benedryl use. So glad this nurse knew how to fix this problem.

I had oral benadryl with A/C with no issue at all - not the least bit drowsy. Had it IV for 12 Taxol and it was a different story. With the first Taxol, I did get a bit drowsy with the first benadryl but had to given more when my BP started dropping a lot - went right to sleep. With rest of the infusions they gave the higher dose age and within seconds of it being infused, I would go 'nigbty-night' as the RNs would say when they started the benadryl. 20 min. before the end of infusion, I would wake up just as abruptly as I went 'nighty-night' with no lingering effects. We are all so different.

The speed that it was injected may not have had anything to do with your reaction - just how your body reacts to different drugs. I haven't had many surgeries in my life but I do know that I am very hard to keep knocked out and have to be given more than my size would indicate to keep me 'out'. I do wake up with no after effects of drugs though.

Jesse - this thread has not been active since 2015 - but thanks for the tip.

I see you are a first time poster. If you go to "My Profile", you can enter your breast diagnosis & treatment. That will make it easier for people to answer you in the future
