Lingering cough after Radiation

I finished my course of radiation in July 2014. As time went on I realised I had a cough every now and then - not deep in my chest, but more in my airways and often it was as I was waking up. It wasn't too bad and I attributed this to damage to my lungs from radiation. I had a nasty cold (I think it was man flu!) over the xmas holidays and after that the cough became more persistent, but still not too bad.

I had found a small lump in my right breast in October 2014. This was biopsied and found to be benign. On my 3month follow-up with my BS in Feb, he decided to do another biopsy and DCIS was found. So we have brought forward my reconstruction and I'm having bilateral DIEP reconstruction together with a right MX next week. I mentioned my cough to my doc, as I wanted to make sure it wouldn't effect such a long operation. He ordered a chest X-ray that day and I was also booked in for a CT scan just after. The Xray came back clear and the CT scan showed areas representative of post radiation injury and not a typical pattern for acute infection or metastatic disease. So I am happy to be reassured.

My question is - Has any one else had a lingering cough after rads - how long did it last? What did you do to help it recover?

Thanks Sarah

I didn't develop the cough, but swallowing is sometimes difficult for me and I can only attribute this to my rads...nothing else. Hope you find a way to get rid of it. Can be very tiresome I suspect.

April485: Thank you. Its not too bad but I have been hoping it won't be there for ever. Ive bene avoiding taking cough medicine as I feel I don't want to take these long term.

It seems things take their time to heal after going through cancer treatment. I hope you move towards healing too.

I see its been quite a long time since your radiation - are you still having problems?
