I was called in January for a second mammogram and ultrasound. They found my lymph nodes enlarged by my left breast. Now this past week had another ultrasound and they found several cyst on being 5cm. They told me nothing is wrong but my fear is 2of my sisters where diagnosed at the same time one 39 and the other at the time was 45. Now my sister that was the youngest is deceased befor 50 from cancer and my sister that was 45 had to have a double mastectomy. Someone please tell me why my doctors will not do a biopsy just to be sure even though I have had the genetics testing done it is still a scary concern.

    Hi Twalker77339-

We want to welcome you to our community here at BCO. We're sorry for the worry that brings you here, but we're glad you've found us, and hope you find this to be a supportive and informative place.

When you say you've had the genetic testing done, do you mean the BRCA test? And were you found to carry one of the mutations? Has your doctor said why they are not suggesting a biopsy at this point? With your familial history, it wouldn't be unheard of to have a biopsy if there were areas of concern. If you feel like this doctor isn't being as proactive as s/he should be, we suggest seeking a second opinion. As you know from watching your sisters battle this disease, time is of the essence. Perhaps it's time to find a doctor who you feel is being more aggressive with your care.

Please keep us posted on, we'll be thinking of you!

    Hi,

Sorry to hear about your sisters.

I have two sisters that are considered high risk because I was diagnosed so young. They both went for a mammogram and are going for an MRI in 6 moths (they are both under 40). One of my sister had just an enhancement and the doctors did a biopsy and placed a marker for future reference.

I agree with the moderators that you might want to find new doctors. Can you ask your family doctor to send you for a biopsy?

    Hugs!!

Have any of your sisters tested positive for a mutation, meaning is your test result a "true negative" or an uninformed one? If you have not seen a generic counsellor yet, I would encourage you to see on as soon as you can.

Cysts are quite recognizable on ultrasounds and distinguishable from hard masses, like malignant tumours. This might be why they are not recommending biopsy for the cysts. The enlarged lymph nodes are a concern though....while they may be due to other causes like infection, based on your family history I'd be looking to get a second opinion.
