Hi Ladies, I was hoping to get some advice and tips for undergoing the diep flap surgery on both breasts. I was diagnosed at 28 this past September. I had a lumpectomy and then started chemo shortly after. I just finished chemo in March and we are planning my bilateral masectomy. I have decided to go with the diep flap surgery. I was hoping I could get some advice on what to expect and post surgery healing. I am a hairstylist and was hoping to be able to go back to work after 6 weeks.

I was surprised that I did not experience much pain mostly weird sensations as the body adjusts. I am 3 years out from my left diep and still am getting more feeling. My job was sitting all day I did get fatigued and uncomfortable by the days end. I took 8 weeks before going back to work.

Melissa -- there is a DIEP 2015 thread that you might want to check out. Also prior year threads with lots of info.  I'm just finishing up -- had nipple recon and a second fat grafting session yesterday -- I'm only up posting so earlier because I slept most of yesterday, not because of pain.  My own experience is similar to Meow -- surprised by the lack of pain and by the amount of fatigue.  Lots of women do have pain though, so take a read of the various experiences.

I would do the same thing all over again.

    Good luck,

    Ridley

I am sorry to get back so late as I am just figuring out how this site works. Thanks for all the great advice and hoping that I will not have too much pain either!
