Screech, Wonderful News!! I am so happy for you!
Welcome Newbie! I love that your dog has now been trained to walk with you. I have two big dogs and was having difficulty walking them for awhile until I discovered the gentle leader. Now I can walk both of them again and we all enjoy the walk.
-
, newbie.
Nothing to stop you now, screech. Go for it!!!
-
just wanted to check in. My favorite yoga instructor was on vacation so I have missed yoga a couple of weeks. I am committed to return this week I am keeping up. my walking.
This thread continues to fill me with hope. I check it frequently though dont always add to it. I have scan pending in April and feel life is a bit on hold until then. I am planning to sign up for a 5K once I get good news from scan.
-
HI everyone-went to the gym today for 20 minutes of lap swimming, 20 minutes on the spin bike, and 10 minutes on the treadmill. This past Saturday DH and I went to a local seasonal road, which isn't plowed in the winter. He had fun on his cross country skis and I enjoyed my snowshoes. Sunday afternoon the sun was bright so we went for a 9 mile bike ride. My ears got cold but it felt great to be pedalling outside. Working around our wacky weather and the winter that won't end has been a challenge, but at least I haven't gotten into an exercise rut. Never know from one day to the next what it's going to be like outside my door!
Hoping for good scan results for you 3-16-2011. Good to hear from you too Teacher. I am signed up to walk a 5k. In two weeks. How are you doing with your running ?
Hope all is well with each and every one of you. I always enjoy it when I see new posts-thanks for sharing.
-
hi all
just finished a short walk today due to hip pain that I fear is related to bone mets in pelvis. I have just started a ketogenic diet at the recomendation of a nautrapath. I wonder what healthy diet choices others are making to maintain their health?
-
I read something a few weeks ago that I found motivating. It said something to the effect of "even a bad run is better than no run", which I've been trying to tell myself repeatedly as I've had some really lousy runs in the past few weeks. Anyway, I think it applies to any sort of exercise and perfectly fits our situation as stage 4, so I thought I'd share.
I had a brain scan yesterday that showed 8 new mets. Thankfully, my doctor is recommending gamma knife rather than whole brain, so I am doubling down on half marathon training while I still can. I went running with a friend this morning and we decided we're going to sign up for one in June or July. I'm still hoping to climb Mt. St. Helens, but that is scheduled for Sept, so I can't really plan that far out.
Have a lovely Easter, gals.

Hello fitness friends... I've missed this thread and have been thinking about all of you. I've been home in California with my dad, who appears to be dying of skin cancer...I can't remember if I mentioned this here before or not. Anyway, he's been in and out of the hospital and is now home but completely bedridden and I am afraid hospice is right around the corner I've been totally depressed, obviously, but trying to run or walk every day... at least the central California weather is beautiful so I have no excuses. I'm up to a five mile run... Nancy and Springlake Girl and all the other half marathoners, you amaze me and I figure that if you guys can do it, I can too. And Nancy - climbing Mt. St. Helens WILL BE amazing! I saw a quote at my oncologists office the other day that I LOVE:
"You have been given this mountain so that you can show others how to climb it"........ isn't that fabulous?
I'm going to try to check in more often... just reading about all of you makes me feel better.
Happy Easter!
XO
Andi
-
Andi - so sorry about your dad, hope you are and he are hanging in there. What a fabulous quote, thanks for sharing. I love it!
Take care, ladies. Hugs all around.
-
nancyh--so sorry to hear about the new mets. Praying the gamma knife does the trick. You had gamma knife before? You are one dedicated chica for keeping up with the running! So impressed at your drive! We are here to cheer you on no matter what!
-
Andi, I love that quote! As a nearly Colorado native, what an appropriate reminder for me.
I just wrote it down and will tape it to my computer monitor.
I'm new to this thread and unfortunately, still pretty new to stage IV boards. But, I love fitness! I used to run a lot but got a little bored with it. As the weather improves, I hope to start it up again. Running has been sounding appealing again to me. I also like to do Zumba (a lot), snowboard, kayak and hike. I've continued to do all of these activities and don't plan to stop!
I'm so inspired by everyone here!
-
Happy after Easter! Last week was spring break for the kiddos. I think it's taken me two days to recover. We went to my moms and put a few more hours on her horse. My son who has always wanted to join the military is now thinking about being a ranch owner when he grows up. Love his goals. He's only 11. I told him to get an MBA if he wants to own a ranch. Fitness wise three days of riding has definitely worked my core and made me a happy lady. -
Happy Easter all! Hope you relaxed with family & ate lots of Easter eggs :-) I certainly did! I'm feeling so much closer to normal - gaining weight - 3kg to go & I'll be back at my normal healthy weight. Onc says she can see the difference in my colouring - I don't have what she calls the straw-coloured diseased look anymore.
Our extended family booked into a lovely guest farm outside Swellendam - absolute quiet, beautiful scenery & hikes up to the waterfall & swims in an icy cold mountain stream. Was so much fun & I felt more alive than I have for ages. Will reactivate gym membership this week & hold on to that feeling with some treadmill & swimming - I think my body is ready for it now!
-
Welcome, Macy! Sounds like you'll feel right at home here although it may take a while to get used to Stage IV. It's been very therapeutic for me to keep moving all these years (at least 7!). It's as important as any pill or infusion for me.
Nancy, what a bummer on the new mets. We'll be holding your hands through Gamma Knife treatment and cheering you on at the half. Bionicbunny and 3-11-2011, you girls will rock the 5K.
Andi, 5 miles already! Wow!
Fujimama, your core will be hard as a rock with a rancher son. We will soon be off for spring break on a mountainbike holiday. I'm not sure Ill be fit enough with my arm still bothering me from an injury, but I'm going anyway.
-
Nancyh,
So sorry to hear about your new mets. I ran a half yesterday in Nevada. Much slower than usual, but they had spotty water stops (nothing between 6.5 and 9.5!) and I was really concerned about getting dehydrated so I walked a good bit there.
Maybe I'll try to join you in Seattle for a run in July! Scan today and results tomorrow, so hoping for a good report.
Nancy

nancyh
you are an inspiration. amazing that you got througjh the 1/2. I love to see all these great stories of success.
-
Thanks. Got the scan results and the eribulin is working. The bone scan did not look so good, but doctor thinks it is tumor flare, since CT scan showed everything shrinking and no new mets. I'm inspired enough by the news to plan another half in Delaware in May!
-
Nancy I am sorry to hear of the new mets. You have inspired me to get moving. I walk 2 miles a day with my husband. He just got moved to 2nd shift and we like to walk in the morning at 10:00. I have to tell him to slow down for me because he is a fast walker. This winter we have had lots of snow so I am thankful it has melted and we are able to have the sidewalks. We live 2 houses away from a bike path that is paved and not covered in snow. We even walked in the rain today.
-
Renewed my gym membership for 2 years today. So there we go cancer, you can't stop me moving for the next 2 years as there's a 40% forfeit if I cancel early!
Had to be honest on the questionnaire so am considered high risk & can't train until I get a letter from my doc. Will have to promise to stick to swimming & yoga for now & make sure I don't crash off a treadmill :-)
-
Hi everyone-seems that spring is here at last. Yahoo! Saturday DH and I walked a fun 5k. Temperatures were near 40°, and brisk and breezy. Sunday was gorgeous, in the 60's and sunny. We enjoyed a 15m bike ride. Today my exercise buddy and I rode 6 miles on the bike trail and then swam at the fitness club. It has been great to get outside but, oh my was I ever tired this afternoon.
If it stays dry I am hoping the mud will be dried up enough for me to get on my horse soon, even for a few minutes. My hip will complain but eventually it will get used to it. My horse loves it-I do these very short little rides, then get off and give her hugs, kisses, and treats. She probably wishes I had my hip replaced years ago!
Hope everyone has a good week.
-
nred,
indeed!
Anne45, rain walks are the best for the lungs.
Karz, never had to get a doctor's note for the gym. But the Manager did try to dissuade me from doing Zumba. I asked him to show me how to strengthen my knees, did the exercises he recommended and continued dancing. I am still dancing four years later.
I rode about 25 kms on my new mountainbike. It's an electric one so not as impressive as it sounds. DD and I alternated going uphill. Then she rode my bike with DH on a single trail while I waited in a restaurant. I do love my new bike and DD does, too.
-
Heidi-I bet that new bike is sweeeeeet! I saw people using those electric assisted bikes in Bad Herrenalb when I was in Germany in 2013. Looked like a lot of fun-especially when they were zooming past me on hills. -
Holy Smokes!!! People are busy...so enlightening & encouraging! Nancy...if anyone can overcome brain mets-it's you! Will hope & pray for successful surgery...you're a miracle girl
I swam today...did aerobics (which I hate, but they played good music), then laps. Went to a new pool in a somewhat shady part of the city, but it's beautiful. I found my happy place.
Hope the sun's going to show it's face for everyone! Off to walk.
-
Yay everyone for doing something to thaw out! Ronnie glad you found your happy place. It's finally sunny today! -
Gracious greetings to all! I'm always glad to see your posts pop up on my iPhone, even on days that I've not been able to move very much. Fortunately, the days in which I maintain at least 30 minutes of activity far outweigh the days when my heart tells me I have to be a slug. If I try to ignore my heart, it screams at me, so I have to listen to all the messages it sends now. Switching to more gentle exercise on some days, interspersed with walks on other days, has helped, but my arms are not getting the workout they once did and it shows! Today I did a 20 minute walk followed by 15 minutes of Tai Chi, and the Tai Chi, gentle as it is, triggered angina because of the arm movements. YIKES! I hate that! However, I've grabbed my shoulders and given myself a good shakedown in order to help me remember that I can only do the best I am capable of doing and no more.
I also want to jump on the welcome wagon for the newcomers. Do what you can and be proud of it! And, Nancy, I want you to know how disappointed on your behalf I felt when reading the news of 8 new mets. I am deeply hopeful the gamma knife option will work well for you. Andi, I am sorry to hear about your father, and I hope he and your family will consider hospice as an earlier rather than a later intervention. So often people and their caregivers wait until the very end of life to call upon hospice and then later express the wish that they had chosen hospice earlier because of all its benefits. I hope you heard that as a gentle reminder and not as a lecture.
-
Oh, 3-16-2011, I think you asked about healthy diet choices. I try not to go too crazy about diet, so I eat chicken and turkey only occasionally, fish occasionally, lots of veggies and fruit, nuts and more nuts, adequate fiber and protein, no caffeine except that in chocolate, almond milk, cow's milk rarely, lots of yogurt, and processed food very rarely. I am careful to limit sodium intake and carbs. That's not much info I know, but that's my general plan. Good luck with finding the nutritional plan that works for you and gives you pleasure.
-
It was sunny here today too! So, I got most of the mud off my horse and rode for about ten minutes. It seemed so good to ride again, even with my hip and leg complaining. It will take some time in the saddle to get the hip stretched after having the winter off. It was a little discouraging that I couldn't lift my saddle up onto my horse, and had to have DH do it for me, but I am very thankful that I can still enjoy so many activities.
Nancyh-Add me to the list of those that are keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.
Hope everyone gets lots of sunshine and nice weather this week.
-
So I had a great scan and I am motivated to set a goal. I will see radiation oncologist feiday and see what my broken pelvis will toleratee. This thread continues to inspire me.
-
Wanted to post a great talk from the LBBC conference in Philly this weekend, on nutrition. Hope you all enjoy it. Julie Langford, a cancer dietician out of NC. She was great, as was the whole conference.
-
I haven't posted in awhile, but I have been working out. I made a fitness "date" with my friend 3 times a week. On Tues/Thurs we run and lift weights and on Wednesday's we do yoga for an hour and then swim for an hour. I was a swimmer in high school and it has been a bit hard realizing that I can only swim about 100 yards before being totally gassed and having to kick. I end up only swimming a little under a 1000 yards a session. I'm going to have to keep working at that!
I had a scan in march which showed a progression into more lymph nodes. I have about 4 lighting up now in my upper abdomen. I found out I was not on Palbociclib, but the placebo during my trial. Which was a little depressing. So I was in a bit of a funk.
My feet hurt SO bad all last year. Really sore (like muscle sore, not skin sore) and achy all the time. Since I've been off Faslodex since March, I just realized the other day that my feet don't hurt! So i guess it was the Faslodex causing all of that pain. It was hard to run the half marathon I did on those sore feet!
I'm on Afinitor and Aromasin now. I started last Thursday. I didn't exercise this week because I had severe headaches. Turns out my blood pressure spiked pretty significantly on these new drugs, so now I'm on blood pressure meds. I'm feeling much more like myself today - so I'll get back to my routine this coming week! Thank you for posting the article on Irisin - that was just the kick in the pants I need to ramp up my exercise. I want to get to a place where I'm doing something for at least 30 minutes a day - even if it is just walking. It will be harder this summer with my kids home, but I'm determined to do it.
Nancy, sorry to hear about the progression
That hike up Mt. St. Helen's looks amazing! I would love to do something like that. Prayers your way that you make the hike!
-
Heidi...25 km sounds like a good work out on the bike. I'm thinking you pedal up to a certain speed, then the electric part kicks in, right? I rode w/grandsons & DD yesterday & my workout was mostly starting/stopping with Hudson, 4yrs, on training wheels..falling & whining! I'm still nervous on my bike..having had a broken ankle & elbow 3 yrs ago from a fall, so I like to ride & not look back.
Brandall...sorry to hear about new mets, and that you were getting the placebo. The amazing thing is that you're doing such energetic activities...force those mets into oblivion! Sounds like you've found a great partner to sweat with
. And 1000 yards swimming is so awesome...I feel good for you! We're driving to our eastern wash home (hi fujii & 3/16) and remember this trip when you had posted pix of DS's birthday and the treadmill was in the background. I think you'll find good energy even when the kidlets are outta school. Glad your feet don't hurt
Bionic & fujii...thinking of you riding your horses is so romantic (and my guess is DH loved helping you out w/the saddle, BB!). Core & glute workouts...I could use both...thanks femara for that extra 10+ lbs!
Brenda...listen, listen to your heart...we need your words here for a long, long time!!!
Karza...absolutely no forfeiting on your membership! Only renewals allowed!
Have an active weekend! Eastern WA is supposed to be 80 degrees!!!
