Wound split open

Options

i had a mastectomy on December 29, 2014. I had a big hematoma which led to a seroma. Was on a wound vac for 7 weeks. Got the wound vac removed 2 1/2 weeks ago, the wound was almost healed. I started Chemo on Thursday, March 18th and that night, I was so hot and in pain and rolling around, the wound split open again. It looks terrible! I can see inside my chest wall again! It's a hole about an inch long and als mot an inch wide! I went to wound care and she had to pack it again. There was a blister on the inside. I am so frustrated! Has anyone had problems with their wound after chemo started and did it heal during treatments? I am worried do

Rose, the open wound with chemo sounds a bit concerning to me. I know you said you went to wound care, but is your onc also aware of what's going on? As you know, chemo suppresses your immune system, so having chemo with an open wound is usually a huge no-no due to fear of infection. Please be sure your onc knows what's going on. I'm not a doctor, but I'm thinking he/she may want to put you on some additional meds to guard against infection. I'm also wondering if your newly re-opened wound will delay your next chemo. It's not something to take lightly or power through. (((Hugs))), and please keep us posted on your situation. Deanna

just got back from the Oncologist. My white blood cells are low so I got the Nuelsta shot. Showed him pics of my wound and he is concerned. Told me I may have to cancel Chemotherapy all together if it's not better by the next round. He said I can't start, stop and restart chemo. I am also on antibiotics. I am very frustrated and feeling helpless.

I am doing much doing better today. White blood cell count is back to normal and infection is gone. Wound is still wide open but I saw a different wound care doctor who thought that he could manage the wound if the oncologist agrees to continue with chemo. But no decisions will be made until next week, I still have 10 days until the next treatment. And he said it Will be a team decision, not just one persons decision. So hoping for the best
