How long did you wait for Biopsy Results?

edited March 2015 in Waiting for Test Results

I had a US Guided Fine Needle Biopsy on Monday the 23rd and I am still waiting. I did call the BS office last night and got a chilly response of "no, they are not back yet, maybe tomorrow"..sigh. Then I called the hospital to make sure they really were not back and they did confirm that the report was not back, but did say they should have by now. Gulp. So, now I am wondering if that's bad? Did they see something and needed other testing? Or were they just backed up? Sorry, for my ramble..but hopeful you all understand my rant.

Two days is areally short time. It completely depends on the facilty & how busy their pathology department is. It has no relation to what the results are

I finally called after a week of not hearing anything.  I'm not sure how long they had the results before that.  I did have and appointment with the BS scheduled about 10 days after the biopsy, so maybe they figured they would just tell me then.

Best to you! I hope all is well!

I waited two days, but I work in the Oncology Department for the Vice President.  I'm not sure if they rushed my results or not.

I know that normally, results can take up to two weeks, which I believe is far too long for anyone to wait for results.

I had my first biopsies on a Wednesday a.m. and they said anywhere from Friday to Tuesday for the results. As it turned out, I got the call Friday afternoon from my PCP, who had the results for a while before calling me.

When you do get the results, ask for a copy of the pathology report - they may be able to scan and email it to you, fax it or have it available for you to pick up. It will have a lot of useful information that you'll need over time.

Also, yours may be preliminary. As I recall there was some aspect that was covered in an addendum that I received a few days later at my first meeting with the surgeon. Sometimes determining the HER-2 status takes a couple of different tests.

Hang in there - this waiting is hard, and we all understand that. Looking back, I wish we had done a few fun, distracting things as we were waiting for for the biopsy appt. and the results. It would have helped, I think.

Susan, I had the mammogram and US on a Thursday, the BS did the core needle and fine needle biopsy the same day. And I got the results from my BS the following Thursday. I met with the MO directly after receiving the results. It will drive you nuts, but the wait is the absolute worst thing to deal with. It is nothing until it is something. I find that needless worry solves nothing. And it has always been for nothing for me. Try to relax, do something you love, and eat and drink well. I try to only give BC so much of my life, the rest is all for me! Good Luck, I hope you get great news! Cheryl

Thank you so very much for the replies and the comfort it brings me to know I am not alone. This is not my first rodeo with this, so I think my anxiety is heightened this time. Tomorrow is Friday and the Surgeon's office closes at noon, so I am hoping they call me so I don't have to go through another weekend stressed out.

I liked what you said BeachBum about BC, what a great attitude and attitude accounts for so much!

Susan, I was one of the "lucky" ones. I waited 24 hours. I do not know if they were slow, or if my personal Dr. asked for it ASAP. She had my appt. With surgeon already scheduled. I got my fingers crossed for you

3 days is not a long time at all to get a report back. A week to 10 days (or even 2 weeks) is not unusual for many to wait for path results. It can be a lot quicker though If the Dr is really concerned. My FNBs were done about 3 that Thurs afternoon and at 8 the next morning the Radiologist called me with the results that were what was expected - IBC. So time is imperative to get TX started (17 days after DX, I started neoadjuvant A/C. This is unusual for most so time between getting the path results, a DX, and starting TX is not usually quite so quick. If your Dr who did the the FNB was really worried, it would have been sent in STAT so it would be done immediately.

Relax - IF your Dr had been concerned about needing immediate results - it would have been sent in for rapid results (STAT). (I've had some biopsies done to check several small possible skin cancer issues - thanks to being incredibly light skinned and having spent a lot of time outdoors so skin has been 'abused'. It's always 2 - 3 weeks for those path reports to come back as though do need to know but not a big hurry.)

I'm with Kaiser. I had the biopsy on Monday and knew that it was IDC, ER+/PR+ on Wednesday. I didn't learn that it was HER2+ until over two weeks later because the initial results came back "equivocal" so it took longer to get FISH results.

It'd be amazing to have a biopsy and learn it was benign :) I did have a small measure of luck, during the mammo they found microcalcifications they wanted to biopsy as well, stereotactically. They got me all set up for the biopsy only to discover the microcalcifications were on the skin, not in the tissue, and were not cancerous. No biopsy necessary, they even refunded me the $10 copay. Small victories.

I get my surgical biopsy results today and it has been 18 days since my surgery!! Longest wait ever. They won't give results over the phone so I had to wait for my follow up with my surgeon. Praying I get good news!!

I waited 2 weeks for my biopsy reports and now have a 4 week wait for my path report.

The wait is causing a lot of anxiety.

Good to know everyone worries just the same :) I had my core needle biopsy on Thursday. Kind of assumed Id hear nothing over the weekend. Doesnt help when you have family members asking if you heard yet. NO! And I wasnt even thinking about it until you asked again :) lol. But our house listing just expired, so we will have a million realtors calling us to try to take a jab at selling our house for us. Two calls this a.m. got me worked up for nothing :( So glad yours was b9, Im really thinking mine will be too, which is why Ive become much less anxious about the call.
