Elevated BUN and creatinine, low eGFR

Options

What does this mean? BUN 28.0 CREAT 1.5 and eGFR 42

I got a letter from my PCP today that he wants to make sure my ONC is following up on this (she isn't) as my CBC/CMP was 2 weeks ago and he hasn't heard anything...I really don't think my ONC has even seen it. My PCP put in bold letters that I should not take any ibuprofen and that "at a minimum we should repeat cbc within the next 30 days." I have a call in to his office, but they have not called back yet. I notice that the liver enzymes are on the low edge of the normal range too...my CBC was the best one I have ever had in 5 years since chemo, so this CMP comes as a surprise. I don't really have any of the other symptoms for Chronic Kidney Disease, I am only 40 and fairly active....Really, I can't think that there is any more likely explanation than mets...but it's so easy to let the mind panic :). If anyone has had this issue, please tell me the diagnosis.

Hi Karody, I follow my CBC/CMP levels closely, like you do and have had quite a few "scares" especially with WBC. It is very hard not to jump to the cancer mets conclusion, I know. The levels you have posted are not grossly abnormal and these can be affected by something as simple as dehydration. Your PCP is correct is scheduling you for another test in 30 days. Make sure that you drink lots of water, especially before you get blood drawn for tests. It makes the draw go easier AND it eliminates dehydration as a cause of abnormal results. I would also make sure that your ONC has these results. I get a hard copy of all my test results just so I can make sure that all my doctors have access to my results. If I have any doubt that my doctors have the information, I deliver it to their office myself. It's inconvenient, but at least I am not leaving my health care in the hands of others.

One of the benefits of Obamacare is that it mandates elimination of paperwork. Dr's, clinics, even dentists are maintaining on line patient portals where all your health information is stored and accessible to you and anyone else you allow access. I won't go to a doctor who doesn't have a portal or is building one that will be implemented in a short time frame.

Hopefully someone will come along who has elevated BUN/Creatine levels and can assure you more with their outcome.

Keep us posted and try to stay calm. Hugs,

    MsP

Thanks MsP! Good to hear that :). Yes, my wbc has been low for five years since I did chemo and this was the first CBC it was normal so I was so pumped about that! Really, my CBC has never been normal again since chemo, but the CMP always has....until now. So deep breaths :).

I finished chemo a couple of years ago but my WBC and Platelets came back low today. This makes me really nervous.
