I had my port in the upper arm Friday. Today I am short of breathe and having some slight pain when I take deep breathes. Did anyone have any similar issues with their port placement?

My port is not in my arm but on upper left chest. I had no issues with shortness of breath at all when it was implanted or at any time since in the 5 1/2 yrs it's been in. Yes, there was some slight pain/discomfort with some moving for a while but nothing bad. Remember - it is surgery and thus a incision made so it is only to be expected that there will be some discomfort.

It might be a good idea to call your surgeon about the shortness of breath to be on the safe side. No one here can tell you what is going on for you as no 2 of us have the same 'stuff' going on with our bodies before DX. I was very healthy(no health issues other than arthritis and osteopenia) at the time but some do which requires different care. I am still healthier than most even a lot younger.

Shortness of breath should ALWAYS be reported, either to your PCP or onc - I had a port for 3-1/2 years and never had a problem but we're all different. Good Luck.

    Hi Trevor,

I don't know about arm placement of ports, but in a chest placement, shortness of breath may be a sign of lung collapse (pneumothorax). Please have it checked out right away. It is uncommon, but can happen. It happened to me and was no fun.

Trvler, Please call right now and ask the nurse or who is on call about your pain and shortness of breath. As Ex said, there can be some serious complications after any surgery. My first thoughts were a blood clot, but I am not medical and as Kicks already stated, seek the experts advice. Please let us know! Thinking of you.

Thanks for all the advice. I did go get checked out by the PCP and he wasn't terribly concerned. After a few days, it seems to have alleviated. It still hurts but it is not infected.
