Is anyone taking aspirin?

Options

I know the study has been out a while, but I just read it and I am overweight.  I was wondering if anyone is taking daily aspirin to prevent reoccurance and if you MO is on board and how much you take.

I take an 81 mg aspirin which, I think, is the equivalence of a baby aspirin daily. My MO knows and my Internist knows. They both are in agreement. I have another reconstruction or should I say deconstruction surgery in less than 30 days so had to discontinue my aspirin until after that.

That what I was thinking.  What could it hurt to take a baby aspirin each day?  I see my MO on April 14, but he doesn't usually like to change anything unless it is MDA recommends.

I take a baby aspirin everyday except not today. Apparently the stats are more favourable if you only take them 2 to 5 days a week versus everyday. Check out the research summary on this site "Aspirin Seems to Improve Prognosis". I read it yesterday so now I will only take it every 2nd day. My doctor says it can't hurt and it may help.

She said the same thing about Metformin. She okayed me to take 250 mg 2x daily but I only take 250 mg in the morning. I am not diabetic and not overweight so not sure if I am doing the right thing with the metformin ( that's why I have not increased it to 2x daily).

I take a low dose aspirin every day; have for years. My family has a history of heart issues so I do it more for that; if it guards against BC recurrence.....all the better!

My oncologist recommended it for me and so I take a low dose everyday. It's my understanding that for women it really doesn't reduce the risk of heart disease but it reduces stroke risk. I'm hoping it reduces my BC recurrence risk too.

I'm encouraging my wife to pop a daily aspirin.

In terms of Metformin, I believe the rationale behind the diabetic drug is quite simple.

Tumor cells can have insulin receptors on them. Metformin lowers circulating insulin levels.

So by lowering circulating insulin levels, Metformin may be taking away some of the stimulus for cancer cell growth.

There is a large Phase III clinical trial being conducted on Metformin and results should be done at the end of 2016.

In the Clinical Trials, Research Studies, News, and Study Results section, a nice thread called Metformin-Anyone on this trial? was started about the subject.

When my oncologist prescribed tamoxifen for me she prescribed low dose coated aspirin. Not sure if she thinks it will help reduce the risk of a rerecurrence of BC or if she prescribes it reduce to the risk of blood clots due to tamoxifen use. I'm taking the aspirin but still passing on the Tamoxifen.

Well, I found a study on Metformin tonight that is a bit disturbing to me. It is a complex study that has some potentially good news for insulin resistant women and women with HER+ breast cancers doing neoajduvant therapy but not good news for other types: "Relative to placebo, metformin decreased ki-67 only in women with insulin resistance or HER2-positive tumors, whereas it showed a trend to an increase of ki-67 in the remaining women." Once again, I am overwhelmed at the complexity and heterogenity of the beast that is breast cancer.

@Katcar. I prefer not to hijack this aspirin thread, but increasing KI67 is never a good thing.

Perhaps this info should be shared on the Metformin trial thread under the clinical trials section. Also, how do they test for insulin resistance?

I was put on 81mg daily aspirin after my prophylactic surgery (DIEP). Was told to take for 1 month. After surgery I was diagnosed with invasive ca and had to see an MO and was put on Tamoxifen. When I asked my MO if I should continue taking the aspirin she said I could if I wanted to. She didn't really seem to have an opinion one way or the other. After reading this thread, maybe I will start taking it again every other day. Thanks all for your input!

Does anyone know why it seems to work better when it is taken 5/2 or 4/3?

I was just wondering if the explanation could point in any direction regarding other medications...

I was going to start taking asprin because everything I have read about it is good as far as cancer is concerned. I had a holistic dr appt yesterday and he prescibed Celebrex to do the same thing. I had never heard of this but apparently some people are using it against cancer. I will give it a try because i am desperate to stay off of afinitor! he also prescibed metformin and meriva and i have to buy the book Ultrametabolism and follow the diet. He did a bunch of blood tests and my a1c is at the high end of normal so he said the metformin was a good idea. I was a bit persistent about that and he agreed because it probably would'nt hurt. But now that the blood test is in he is on board with that. wish me luck, I hope this stuff works!
