April 2015 Chemo Crew... Starting in April? Please join us!
Hi All,
Time to start a group for anyone headed to the chemo bar starting in April. I am due to have my port put in March 31, and start chemo either the same day, or April 1.
This is my second go-round with chemo. My Sept 13 chemo pals saw me through chemo with my sanity intact, and I recovered both my energy and strength and have run a few half marathons since then (I will remind myself of this over and over during the next 6 months). My Sept chemo crew are still some of my greatest friends. I hope our April gang can support each other in such a way.
My cancer came back in February with a tiny lump where my first tumor was. Sine the excisional biopsy came back positive for cancer, they did further excision a few weeks later. In surgery, they found a second tumor, over 6 inches away from the first, hiding out in the soft tissue. Apparently my body likes to make cancer. This meant a second trip to the chemo bar. If it gives me lots more years with my 3 kids, I am all for it!
So, April friends, sorry you have to be here, but since you're here, join us, tell us about yourself, and share what preparations you are making for chemo. I got my wig yesterday, and my coworkers and I are having shave-fest 2 on March 30.
There will be good days and bad days, but more good than bad. We'll celebrate the good, and carry each other through the bad.

Hey, I think I will probably starting chemo in April, but I'm not sure when. I am waiting to be released from the plastic surgeon. I'm trying to figure out how much, if any, work I will be able to do during my 4 treatment cycles. I am an x-ray tech in a large hospital, so my job requires a lot of physical work and exposure to many different diseases. I have only had one visit with the oncologist so I haven't had the chance to talk about this fully. Is there anyone here that works in healthcare & went through chemo?
I recently started going to art therapy at the cancer center near my home. I have crocheted myself a couple of hats and have been watching some videos about tying scarves.
I don't really know what I am most worried about. Side effects, hair loss, work. Probably work. I want to work and at the same time I don't want to put myself at risk for bad infection or something. And I have no idea what to expect from this whole process. Do you have to get any tests done before starting or is that dependent on which meds they use? Does everyone get a port or is it only the people who will get lots of treatments? Do you need any kind of testing during or after?

Hix1mel,
Last time I had 4 rounds of TC chemo. I work as a firefigter/paramedic. I mostly did "light duty" but did take EMS calls from time to time. My counts fell once and I had a high temp, but thankfully never did get an infection. I did not need tests last time. This time I am having AC so I just had an echocardiogram today. I am taking a class all day M-F for the next 2 weeks so I had to have all tests done by the end of this week.
Sorry you have to be here, but we'll plod our way through the next few crazy months together

Had family pictures today while I still have my own hair...such as it is. It was nice to get pictures...had not done it in 10 years (way overdue), but it was emotional nonetheless. Glad it's done and glad someone recommended it to me

I'll be joining you...my first round of chemo is set for April 2nd. This has been a long drawn out process for me. I received my dx on 10/17, met with the surgeon on 10/21, met with the onco a week later, then did not have my BMX until 1/5/15! Now not starting chemo until 4/2.
I feel as if I've had to drive this whole wagon train...kept making calls to the offices and insisted on another appointment with each before my surgery.
I am read to get going on chemo. It will be 4 rounds of Cytoxan/Taxotere. I have my hats all ready and I'm gathering up things for my chemo bag and for SE's. Along with chemo, we will be dealing with working on/moving into a different home we are buying AND my farmer-husband will be starting spring field work and planting! I am also employed outside the home. This could be a crazy few months!

welcome Vanmamma, I did TC last time. It was not a walk in the park, but it was very doable. It must be very frustrating to have had to wait so long for everything. It sounds like spring is a busy time for you! I am in Iowa, but am not on a farm. A few of my coworkers help on farms on their off days from our job, and I know how crazy busy they are. Luckily, I had way, way more good days than bad on TC. I am hoping for the same on AC+T

Hi - I'm Lynne and I think I'll be starting chemo in April. I haven't had my meeting with the multidisciplinary team yet (either the 23rd or 30th), but from what they have told me, and what I have read, it sounds like they will be recommending chemo, and then I would be starting that as soon as all the preflight checklist items can be accomplished. I came here to see what to expect - the general information on the internet is very generic, I wanted to hear from people who had gone or were going through it. I read all of the "starting in March" thread.
x1mel - I am also concerned about work. I want to continue to work, but I don't see how it is going to work. I have a desk job, and I will have the flexibility to work from home, but it sounds like SE could take you out, and how do you plan around that? I am a project manager for IT projects, I have to attend status meetings and deliverables are very date driven. I'm trying to not spend too much time worrying about it until I know exactly what my schedule will be.
I was diagnosed via a routine mammogram, did not feel anything. I have very dense/fibrous breast tissue. I had been called back for retakes before, so I wasn't concerned at all - pretty shocked when the director of the department came into the US and said they saw something "probably cancer" - she said that twice. I was surprised that she'd deliver the news like that, but she obviously knew her stuff, I had a biopsy 2 days later, then got confirmation the next day. I had a lumpectomy and sentinel biopsy on 2/25 and results showed it was larger than originally thought (grade 3), and I had positive lymph invasion and metastasis in lymph node. To boot, they had not gotten a clear margin on one side, so I had to go back just last week, 3/13, for re-excision (not lumpectomy as it says in sig).
I live about 37 miles from Boston, so have the best medical care in the world near by, and I had my surgery performed by a wonderful surgeon at MGH, and they will give me my recommended treatment plan. But, I really don't want to drive to Boston for treatment, it would add so much stress and time to the process. I'm hoping that they will be able to work with one of the community centers, and I'd only have to go to Boston 1x a month or something like that.
I guess that's enough about me. Looking forward to hearing from others gearing up for treatment in April.

Lynne, I had to go in for a second surgery this time around too (my second was 2/25...date of your first). Frustrating when you just want to move forward. I hope you are healing well. I hope you can meet with your multidisciplinary team sooner rather than later. I think it is much easier mentally once you have your plan in place. I hate being in limbo just waiting. Before my recurrence, I was a mentor to 3 local gals going through chemo. 2 of the 3 sailed through and were anle to work pretty much all of the way through. The third has taken more time off. I was able to work from home and work flexible hours during chemo last time, and it really helped a lot. I enjoyed being able to work because the boredom at home drove me crazy. Keep us posted on your treatment plan.

Hi Karen, I heard from the scheduler today - she left me a message with an appointment for 4/13! I called back - why so long? She said that they wait 4-6 weeks for healing (because BS will also examine my incision at the same time). I got her to move it until 4/6, but it will be a long wait. I'm thinking of trying to throw together a getaway. I just have to figure out what to do with my kids. I have 3 children, a son - age 18 - he is at college; a daughter, 13, who has type 1 diabetes; and another daughter, 9, who keeps me on my toes, but she was diagnosed with PHACE(s) association shortly after she was born - she has been absolutely fine, but it is now causing her problems with academics. So, I have hands full - especially with full-time job.
A friend of a co-worker was able to have dose dense chemo for 6 weeks - I am hoping for something like that, it would be great to have it done. Also, if I had a defined period like that, I'd take a short-term LOA. When I hear 6 and 8 rounds with a round being 3 weeks, I just can't picture trying to keep up my job with that. I would like to try to keep working for my own mental health, but not at the expense of my co-workers having to pick up the slack - that wouldn't be fair.
You must be starting to feel healed by now? I know I was healing up nicely from 2/25 when I went back in last Friday. This time there is more pain. Last time, I swear I was still numb a week later, but this time I don't think they put in as much pain meds or whatever they used - more achy and sharp pains. Also, nipple feels chaffed - almost like if you went braless and running or dancing (I did that once - danced all night in a backless dress so no bra - ouch).

I have 3 kids too:). I have a 15 year old son and my daughters are 10 and 12. I am taking a 2 week course right now. It is from 8-5 Monday through Friday this week and next week. I have wanted to take it for 5 years. I was diagnosed a week after signing up, and I was hoping to still take it. I Managed to schedule surgery before it and chemo after. It is a nice distraction from cancer. I had 3 surgeries at once, a reexcision, ALND, and oopherectomy. I needed 4-6 weeks to heal too. I would say if you can slip away for a trip, go for it. It will really help pass the time and be a distraction from everything cancer. My class has been great for that

Hi April Ladies! I just wanted to drop in and wish you all a comfortable journey. I finished AC/T on 11/25. And I did work 42 hours a week all they way through chemo. I had a flex schedule so by working every weekend I got it done. Rough but I made it.
My schedule was Mon. 10 to 8, Chemo Tues. and work 3 to 8, Wed. 10 to 8, off Thursday and Friday, Sat. 10 to 6, and Sun. 11 to 5. Not fun but I managed. You can do this!
Good Luck! I am going to be hanging up my wig soon, and you will too!

Thanks for the note, Beachbum

Hi Karen - question for you since you have BTDT - would you plan a vacation during chemo? I mean of course not when you would be having infusion and the ~5-7 days after due to SE, but would it be a bad idea to go away somewhere on days 8-15 or 20 (depending on how long your cycles are)? Would you still potentially not be feeling well or are you taking a risk that you could get sick, then you wouldn't be near doctors?
Here's why I'm asking - I would love to take my daughters somewhere - maybe just Florida - during part of April school vacation, but I'm concerned that if I had my first treatment before (at least a week, of course), that I may regret it.
Just wondering.

Lynn, I generally felt quite good from day 8-20 last time. The exception was the round when I developed a neutropenic fever. My former MO did not do neulasta. Once I was hospitaized for the fever, he did it in later rounds. So if you will travel, definitely request neulasta to prevent infection. I believe you need to live life during chemo. I would drive on any vacation to avoid germ factory of plane, get MOs blessing, and just know where to go should you get sick. Since I will be doing chemo weekly all summer, our family will not be able to go on our normal 2 week trip. I have each of my kids planning a different 4 day getaway for the family instead. They are excited. I do intend to do all 3 mini trips. I am going to try and live life. what chemo regimen are you doing
-
I don't know yet, that's part of the problem. I won't know until I meet with team on 4/6 - which would be too late to book tickets, so if I book it now (for around 4/18), I will either have to have 1st infusion by 4/10 or wait until I get back.
I have a 2 week vacation booked for end of June/1st week July already - it's not so far that I couldn't drive to hospital if I had to (I actually had to do it last vacation because my husband was in ICU for the 2 weeks we were there), but I'm hoping I could do a treatment before - even if I feel crappy on vacation - feeling crappy by the ocean is better than feeling crappy at home.
Lynne
-
I would much rather feel crappy by the ocean!!!!!!!!!!
-
Sorry, forgot to say thanks for the advice, that helps. I think I'll have to bag the trip to FL. Maybe we can spend a night or two at a hotel not too far that has a pool.
Lynne
-
Maybe you can reward yourself with the trip to Florida when chemo is finished
-
hi! I start 4/6 4 cycles of AC.
-
Hi kbta - how long are your cycles? It seems like most women who have posted are having 3 weeks cycles, but I've read about 2 week (dose dense) cycles.
I'll be counting down to 4/6 also - but just for my team meeting (treatment plan) and post-surgery exam.
Lynne
-
Hi April chemo crew...I just found out I will probably be starting dense dose chemo on April 1 or shortly thereafter. Already had my surgery and am trying to heal up enough from that. I'm a 34 year old TN and I had a double mastectomy two weeks ago and another surgery for complications on Monday. I'm so anxious to get chemo started and put this behind me...but I still feel so weak from loss of blood. I'm so glad I found you all, it's been really hard to go this alone. All the best!
-
hi Lynne,
Mine are 3 week cycles. I was supposed to do dose dense, but I'm pregnant so oncologist says she wants to do 3 week cycles.
Good luck at your meeting hopefully they can get your plan moving along. Feels a little better once you have a plan of action.

Wom, Tanisha, PG and BC? I don't even know what to say - sorry doesn't cover it. I assume you are in your later trimester? When are you due?
Lynne
-
still early 13 weeks found out when I was 6 weeks.
-
kbta, There was a gal in my Sept chemo group who was pregnant. I will ask her to stop in here andget in touch with you. She did chemo in her second trimester. She delivered a little early and finished chemo afterwards. She did great, and her son was born with a full head of hair!!!!!!!!!! The are both very healthy now. I am so sorry you have to go through this while pegnant.
little blue flowers. I hope you gain strength after the surgeries. It amazes me how much the surgeries take out of us. I hope you recover quickly.
I am doing dose dense AC, every 2 weeks. Anyone else?
-
thank you that would be awesome! I'm with littleblueflowers I want this behind me, but it will be a long journey after I deliver I get taxol possibly with carboplatin. Then I want a MX and hysterectomy since I'm brca 1 even though they said they don't recommend that until 35 (I'm 28). Just glad to have a place to vent where people actually understand what we're going through unfortunately.
-
kbta - I'm the one that KBeee is referencing! I will send you a PM. Would love to support you through this journey! (I live in the Bay Area, not too far from you too!
-
I'm doing dose dense as well! Any idea what we can expect?
-
I know a couple people who seemed to sail through and were ableto work full time with just a little nausea. I know a few who were really, really sick and could barely make it off the couch. Most I knew fell somewhere in the middle. I figure I will be somewhere in the middle, but hoping to do well. I am eating well and excercising every day to try to go into it in good shape...as good shape. as I can after 2 surgeries in 2 months.
-
KBeeee, wow, good for you for keeping fit! I had surgery two weeks ago and another last week for a post surgical bleed so I'm very weak from blood loss. This is really worrying my because it seems like you should be at the top of your game to withstand chemo, and by the time I start I won't have been able to excercise normally for a month....OK let's be honest...walking around the block is a challenge now. And a month ago I was ready for a marathon. Sorry to ramble on, I guess I'm just scared. Thanks for being there! It helps so much!
-
wow you are amazing! Hugs!
