Jean -- yes, we can do this! Today will end my second week.
Happy bra shopping, ladies! Not my favorite kind of shopping, but sometimes necessary.
-
Elaine, how are you doing after week 2? Love, Jean
-
I got a question- just finished my 3rd rads today, 7 more to go. Any suggestions to combat the nausea. I get it abput 5-6 hours after treatment and dont feel like eating anything. I don't vomit just feel like I almost need to vomit but just can't, if this makes sense.
Kathy

neogirl (Kathy): Do you have any anti-nausea meds? When I was doing chemo, I was prescribed prochloroperazine and ondanestron. I'm not sure how effective they are, but you can always ask RO for a prescription.
Jean -- I'm doing OK! The radiated area seems a little pinker, but it doesn't feel like it's been burned or anything. I'm looking forward to the weekend so my skin can recover more.

Hi everyone. My first time posting so i hope i am in the right place. I just finished my whole breast rads i have a total of 34. They told me to go back Tuesday to start on the last 8 to the tumor bed. for all those who are just starting- we can do this. I want to ask those who finished. Does it get worst when they do the boosts? hugs to all my new sisters.

You have everything left that's important, Those other things were just accessories!
I bet this will be tolerable for you also. Of course it always depends on the humans delivering the "cure." Luckily, my humans are humane. I pray you also have that same experience and things go Well!
Sincerely,
Kathy

Just finished my first week and it was uneventful. The only thing I notice is that the breast is sometimes slightly itchy. I've been putting 100% Aloe Vera on after each treatment, preventatively at this point. Welcome to all the new Spring Sisters!
-
One week down today!!!! Go me, teehee. Five more to go. Tired and a little stingy but that may still be from the ALND surgery last month. I feel like we are in a race together where we will all be winners. Love, Jean

Neogirl, I don't know about the law where you live, but during chemo I found pot to be highly effective in combatting the queasiness. I was fortunate enough not to have severe problems with nausea, but I was queasy and food tasted lousy so I didn't have much appetite. A couple of times I smoked a bit of marijuana and it instantly relieves the nausea and has the added benefits of stimulating your appetite and making food taste better - it had been so long I'd forgotten about the "munchies".
I also was prescribed Zofran and Phenergan (promethazine). I never took the Phenergan because I know it causes extreme drowsiness, but the Zofran was very effective.

Jesika, I had 23 regular rads and then 4 boosts, and so far the boosts haven't created any SEs that seem worse. My RO put my regular rads on hold to give my armpit skin a chance to settle down and heal a bit. Monday we'll go back to regular rads I think. I have 5 of those left plus 3 more boosts. My routine continues to be calendula cream right after treatment, aloe vera another 2-4 times a day, aquaphor at night and cold compresses when I can lie around that exposed to do it.
-
Cassie - Seems like you and i are at about the same in rads. They gave me a day off then start again on Tuesday for for 8 boost. I should be finished on April 1. so far not to bad. Looks like a bad sunburn. No pain or itching yet. I thought that will come along with the last eight. The minute i get home from rads. i put on pure aloe (which i took from my plant. Doc said it was ok to do so -then when that a bit dry i put on aquaphor. I do that as often as i can, The cold compresses sound good to me. I will try that also. I actually started to prep my breast a week before. I hope the rest of the rads go fast. I can't wait to finish. We all can do this as long as the staff is willing to work with you. My doctor said he would alternate also but i didn't have to so we went right ahead and finished up full breast. i was a bit afraid that the worst was yet to come. thanks
-
Jean--Glad to hear you conquered your first week.
Katluck--I know what you mean about looking forward to being normal again.
I was getting pretty cooked for a while. But my homemade cream has turned out to be a winner. Things are going pretty good for now. I was definitely more tired today. I haven't been sleeping much. I have 9 sessions left. Can't believe I'm getting close to done.
-
Hi - I am glad to find this thread. I will be starting rads as soon as I can get my right arm up over my head due to axillary web cording that appeared after surgery. Starting pt next week, 3x week. Bra shopping is a pain. Is the material a problem?
-
Hi everyone. I had simulation on Monday and started hypofractionated radiation on Tuesday. I am already turning red. Was not expecting this so soon. Three weeks to go....
-
I've been going back and forth from the big D to constipation since midweek. Yuck! So sick and tired of being sick and tired. Five weeks of rads to go. Hubby is also cranky. Aaaagghhh! Love, Jean
-
MombieZombie, what is your homemade cream made up of?
Jesika, glad things are going well for you.
BC2015, I haven't even tried shopping for real bras or anything like that yet. I got some Coobies that are pretty comfortable to use after surgery, and I wear them now too, or else a cotton cami with a shelf bra. I'm only an A cup, and only on one side these days, so I don't need much.
shelleym, you can do it! Take it one day at a time.
Jean, I'm sorry you're feeling sick and having to deal with C and D issues on top of everything else. That is just not fair.
-
Thanks Cassie. I believe that life holds np guarantees about being fair. I also experienced an ocular migraine a little while ago. This could all be relayed to stress and trauma from cancer treatment. Just had some broth with rice (brat diet). Going to try for a nap before church later tonight. Love, Jean

Hi ladies.
Finished chemo and set to start 30 rads on the 31st. 25 and 5 boosts. Nervous about starting just because every time I think it's going to go a certain way (during this whole trip) things take a different path.
Here's hoping to uneventful rads for us all. I'll keep you posted.

I finished my first full week of rads! 7 rounds down and 21 to go.. As prescribed by my RO, I am using desoximetasone cream followed by Vanicream in the evening, Vanicream throughout the day to stay moisturized, and corn starch throughout the day to prevent rubbing and an inflammatory response. I am allowed to take a daily multi-vitamin, but no other antioxidant supplement.
After 7 rounds, my skin looks fine. The only SE so far is fatigue, but I also had my Herceptin treatment (..and the kids were home on spring break). I need some energy back!
Jean: I hear you on the gut issues..D every day for 4 weeks for me. My MO thinks it is Herceptin and it has been particularly troublesome this week. It's not bad enough to warrant any action, but ugh, I have had enough!
-
Hello Spring Rad Sisters, Simulation done last week... have my red sharpie marks with clear stickers... passed on the tattoos even though they are tiny. Will have my dry run 3/25 and first actual treatment will be 3/26. Looking forward to getting it done! Armed with calendula, pure aloe and Aquaphor. Let's do this!
-
Hi everyone, I met with RO on Thursday and she is going to do the "Canadian Protocol" which is great since my BS told me 33 treatments. They have already done the tattoos and I will be having dry run on 3/26 and will start treatments on the 3/30. RO mentioned that I will be having 5 electron treatments at the end. Is that what everyone calls boosts? Did, or is, anyone else have the treatments done while lying on your stomach? It seems the more I learn the more I need to know. I am glad to have found this thread!

Hi all, welcome to anyone new--Janiner, Shelleym1, Jesika, Shelly74, Rekidal, BC2015--hope I didn't miss anyone. Welcome, welcome! Good luck to you all as you begin.
I have 9 sessions left. I'm on the down hill slide, though I think the hard part is yet to come. I talked to my friend who has 2 sessions left so I learned what to expect.
Rekidal--I had 33 treatments in my plan too. What's "canadian protocol?" Nope, no treatment laying on tummy for me, but I have read about it on the net. It's supposed to be safer, especially for left-side treatment. I have wondered about it since that's my treatment side.
Jean, sorry to hear you've been having more ups and downs.
DaisyQ--Yay for one week down! I'm on Herceptin too. It causes me horrible bone a joint pain. And some nausea in the first three days, but nothing else. Sorry you are having gut troubles.
Cassiecat--homemade cream has the following: coconut oil, sweet almond oil, emu oil, calendula oil, 100% aloe vera. I am going to try adding an essential oil from Young Living tomorrow or Monday. It's called Panaway. And when my rads are done I'll also be adding Vitamin E oil.
Today I was walking behind my mom as we were leaving a building with a group of friends. I wasn't paying attention and didn't notice she had paused. I ran right smack into her shoulder (she's petite) with my radiated side. Thought I was going to throw up it hurt so bad and it caught me by surprise. Still hurts. My cream calmed things down a bit, but it's not designed to fix this. Going to be a long night.
-
Still with diarrhea. I don't think it's herceptin as my last infusion was on 3/10 and D started 3/18. Also I've been on herceptin since last fall and this never happened before. The teck said it's not the rads but I will bring it up with the RO on Tuesday. Love, Jean
-
Mombie,
Yay on the downhill slide on the rads. You say the worst is yet to come from your friend who has two sessions left. Can you give me some clues on what to expect on the slide down the rads hill from your friend. I was secheduled for 10 sessions and have done 3 so far, 7 sessions to go and just have nausea so far.

Rekidal I am also laying on my stomach. My boob hangs through an open slot on the table. My neck is killing me when it's over. lol
-
neogirl--My friend did fine until she got near the end of her boosts. Then she reported that her pain had increased to a serious level--talked about a type of nasty burning sensation that was different from the feel of the radiation burns. She also said that her skin had started falling off in chunks. She was being prescribed special creams that she didn't need before and had to see the doc two days in a row. I am waiting to see what she says on Monday. You and I should both remember that everyone is different in how they react to rads. My friend's difficulty scared me a little because I have already had a lot more skin trouble and pain than she reported.
Jean--So sad that your troubles continue. You continue to be in my prayers along with all here. Keep drinking liquids. You know that dairy is bad when you have had diarrhea for a long time? Mentioning that just in case. Take care.
shelleym1--I'm sorry the treatments hurt your neck. I'm on my back and have arthritis in my shoulders. My shoulders hurt and burn and then go numb when I'm in treatment. Sometimes my left shoulder shakes and I can't make it stop. You might want to consider oncology massage if you have access to that. That's something I'm doing and it helps. My dh is going to go to my next appointment so he can watch and learn what my massage therapist does. (we have a massage table)
Questions--(1) Is anyone getting irritation in the throat? I'm starting to have trouble swallowing certain things and I cough a lot because of a constant tickle now. (2) Is anyone experiencing pain in the ear on the side of treatment? I am. I brought it up with my RO. I know they are concerned but they don't think it's the rads. It got worse again after my Friday session. Going to bring it up at my next doc visit.
-
Mombie - Canadian Protocol is when they give you a higher dosage for 16 treatments, then 5 boosts at the end. My RO recommended it for me right away. I am not sure why they don't recommend it for everyone. There must be some criteria for these treatments, and I know that there are some cancer organizations that do not agree with the accelerated treatments. I did a lot of research on this prior to meeting with her, and was hoping for these treatments. As far as positioning, I think one of the reasons I will be having treatment while laying on my stomach is because I am large breasted. I am also a little supersized right now with all the surgeries and the swelling that doesn't want to go away.
Shelley - My neck was killing me last week while I was getting the tattoos. I injured my neck and shoulder several years ago, and when I had the stereotactic biopsy they had to keep applying ice for me to get through the procedure. I typically take Motrin 800 for the inflammation and pain, but the doctor said she will prescribe something stronger if it becomes too much of a problem. I was having second thoughts after I left, so I asked her the next day if we could change the position once the treatments started and she said no. I really considered telling her I changed my mind and I want to lie on my back, but since it is my left side and she strongly recommended it I told her I would suck it up. I'm still having doubts. But, she did say that I may be able to get the boosts while lying on my back. She'll make a determination at that time. I know the actual treatment only last a few minutes, but how long were you lying in that position? Is there anything you have been able to do to lessen your pain? I thought of taking a muscle relaxer so I won't have any spasms, but I don't know if I will be able to drive to and from the hospital if I do. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
-
rekidal--If you are having second thoughts still, let your RO know. My planning session was so painful to my shoulder that I had doubts too and I was told there was nothing I could do to fix the problem. I told my RO and she made the dosimetrist have me come back for a second planning session to adjust my position. Since my tattoos were already placed, there were things we couldn't do, but there were able to improve the situation some. Not perfect, but it helped. If you aren't already, be vocal through everything. Luck to you.

Hi all, I am on my 19th session, I still have 6 to finish. My skin color has changed and the scar becomes so prominent. The most annoying is the appearance of blackheads around the scar and on the breast. They look awful. Anyone experienced that. Please advice.
