Hi, I am new to this site. My grandmother who is 92 just went through a partial mastectomy with node biopsy. I am in medical field and got pathology reort before follow up appointment. 1 node is negative and one positive for mets, DCIS, and the margins were negative. Her mass was 2.2 cm. On a medical standpoint I can handle anything coming our way, but on an emotional level, my heart is breaking. My grandmother raised me and is like my mother. Want to be as supportive as possible and not sure how. Even though I have the connections for the best doctors, the little girl in me wants to make everything go away. Any advice would be great.
Thanks,
Constance P

Constance,
I am sorry that your grandmother is going through this but she is lucky to have you with her. I think sometimes the best thing is to simply be present for her. Help her to live her life as fully and normally as possible. This disease and treatment can be tiring for us younger women and no doubt just that much harder on a 92 year old body (Even if her spirit is only 22!).
The best of luck to you and your grannie. -
Just back from radiation oncologist. Gram is Stage III. Starts Radiation in about a week. As you know without, re-occurance could happen as soon as 6 months. It's funny because everyones normal response is that she is 92 and lived a full life. To me that does not matter. Will she die of Breast Ca? Probably not, it will be of something else, but that doesn't make that kind of diagnosis any easier to handle. In the medical field, death is a common factor, you can separate yourself from it with patients but when it hits home it is a very hard place to be. Your auto pilot goes out the window. They say knowledge is power but not in this situation. The knowledge I have only makes it harder.
Well that is where we stand today and life will now be one day at a time. To anyone reading this, cherish your loved ones because life IS too short and sometimes we forget that.

hi,
knowledge does make it harder. my grandma passed when she was 92. i was heart broken. no matter their age is is hard. god bless you and your grandma. -
my 85 yr old grandmother was just diagnosed today and i'm so worried for her. she goes in for surgery next week. how has your grandmother fared through all of this? mine is a spunky gal with a great outlook (at least what she's showing to the rest of us) but i just can't imagine how her body will take everything that's coming.
