. I have had my lumpectomy and the surgeon told my family 35-45 minutes so they went downstairs to deli and got a sandwich. They came back in 30 minutes. Surgeon came to talk to them while they were gone so he was fast. What I would like to know is how information do they give you right after the lumpectomy. Is this when he says it is invasive or noninvasive or do they have to wait until the tissue is sent out to be examined?

They will not have an answer on the specific pathology of the mass removed - that will be in the pathology report later, but if they did a SNB at the time of lumpectomy they can give a preliminary finding on it.  All final SNB results will come in the later report  though.  Usually the doctor gives the family news on how you tolerated the procedure, and if there was anything unusual or different from what the initial surgical plan was.

DH was told how many lymph nodes out, no drains, found nothing unexpected, I would go home when awake/tolerating liquids, office would call in couple of days with path report. Hilarious thing was breast center nurse took the bra I wore in and tried to match it with a looser non-underwire one. Oh my it looked like it could have fit Dolly Parton.
