Getting test results, over the phone?
I'm expecting my test results tomorrow, I was promised they would call. It will be 10 days since my core biopsy. My question is; do they tell you if you have cancer over the phone? Or do they request you come in and see the dr.? Just wondering how it happens. Thanks, Chri

My MD told me over the phone. (She wasn't very kind about it either-one of several reasons she is no longer my primary.) I think it varies tremendously from one MD to the next, however. I'm sorry you've had to wait so long for your results.

Hi,
May I suggest that you call them. Ten days is insane. Your results might be under a pile of other ones?
Good luck

I was told three to ten days for results.....working days that is.
I think it depends on your doctor. I believe mine will let me know via email, she is the best!
Wishing you a great outcome....please let us know.

I have been told over the phone (at night) in one instance, and told to come in for an appointment in another. It depends on the protocol for the office/facility. Ten days is not unheard of. If it is cancer, they need to do deep tissue staining to determine if it's ER/PR/Her2 positive or not, which can take time. At the same time, you should be aware that the length of time doesn't necessarily predict the result. There are lots of other factors that come into play.

Over the phone per my request.

just got a phone call!! Dr. Said its benign, thanks for your responses.

I'm so happy for you Crissy!! I received my diagnosis over the phone and I am sure it is about the same - once the Dr says cancer, everything else is a blurr. Glad you did not have to have that diagnosis delivered via any channel. Take care!!
-
on a Sunday! Amazing, great doctor.....you will sleep well tonight.
Very, very happy for you.

That's great, Chrissy! Before I was discharged, we had an appointment scheduled (biopsy on Thursday, follow-up on Tuesday) to meet with the surgeon in his office for the pathology. I can't imagine waiting 10 days or getting the results by phone!
-
Wonderful news !--so happy for you! (my surgeon was very reluctant to tell me over the phone, kept saying I like to have people come into the office for results in person (which I can understand), but I told him "I won't be able to sleep, I need to know". I am a medical professional, and I told him "it's OK, I want to know the details now". He finally relented, told me basically what I needed to know, and then had me come for an appt the very next day for all the details and plans.) I appreciated his candor and the fact he got me in the next day.

I was told over the phone both times. The first was for the results of the initial core biopsy on the right. BS said she didn't feel it was necessary to have her pts come into the office for results, it only delayed the information and said she always gives them over the phone. I happened to be off work that day and at home. She then had me (and hubby) come in to see her first thing the next morning to answer our questions and make plans. I have to say that by the time we went in to see her, I was much more calm, had a list of questions ready and felt more prepared to hear the answers.
About 10 days later, after my MRI (ordered by her), and another biopsy on the left (which resulted from findings on the MRI), she called me at work to tell me I had bilateral BC. That was the worst. I thought I was not for long for this world, I left work because there was no way I could finish the day. I don't even remember driving home. Should have had someone drive me....

In some states there is legislation that prohibits giving biopsy results over the phone - because your identity can't be confirmed. My BS gave me results in the office, I have also had numerous positive biopsies for skin cancer and those are delivered by certified mail and I have to sign for the letter.

Great news, Chryssy!
For future readers, I have Kaiser and was called on the phone in the morning while I was at work. I calmly wrote down all the details about my tumor and then set up the half day appt to meet with the surgeon, plastic surgeon, geneticist, and oncologist. After that I walked over to my boss' office to tell her. I then went to my car and called my mom and boyfriend. After that, I went back to working. It was a weird day, for sure. I totally expected it so I didn't cry or feel sad.

I was called by the Radiologist at 8 the morning after biopsies were done about 3 in the afternoon the day before. He called the cell number I had given so it is only logical that it was me on the phone. The point was I needed to know quickly so I could get going with TX. Even if there is a question as to who is being talked to, it can be confirmed by a question with a preset answer or other pertinent info. A I have Hubby and Son listed with all of my Drs so they can call and get info directly from the Dr IF they feel they need to/I didn't explain what is going on to where they understood.
I, too, have had positive skin biopsies (2 Squamous Cell and a Basal Cell) and the path reports came in regular mail.

I teach 6th grade SPED...they called me at school....I called one of the other FANTASTIC teachers on my team and she held me while I sobbed and got me home and arranged coverage for the day so I could leave...not the best day of my life.
-
My doctor called me the day after biopsy with my results. I am so grateful that she a) called and b) I didn't have to wait long. I then made an appointment for the next afternoon with my husband for a consult. She gave me just enough information (invasive, ductal...) so I could at least do a little research and have questions ready and so what she was telling me made more sense.
-
Whar is SPED?
-
I got a call from the Pathologist who studied the samples. I was standing in line at the local bike shop. The first thing he said was "I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but you have cancer." After that, everything he said, I heard "womp, womp, womp". It was so surreal. Everybody in line in front of me carrying on with their lives. I looked across the store at my husband and he gave a thumbs up/thumbs down sign. I gave a thumbs down. We walked toward each other and he hugged me. He was crying. First time I ever saw him cry.

SPED is probably Special Ed.
-
that's the first time I heard of the pathologist calling, the thumbs down thing touched me.. Special Ed teaching is very demanding my son is in a special Ed class pf 12 everytime I go in to take part I'm exhausted after one afternoon!! Very physically demanding job too. Got my results on phone, on second business day I began calling the radiologist place, on third business day after biopsy radiology told me results were in but they would not discuss on phone and I had to call my doctor. On biopsy day Radiologist knew I was anxious about my results, said he checked the computer quicker than the Breast surgeon usually and that he'd call me with my results. I called my Breast surgeon and got the physicians assistant, she said pathology wasn't in and that there was just a date stamp on it to say they were still working on it. Later that afternoon the PA called me with benign results, told me I'd be having an ultrasound in six months to check all stable. I'm still waiting for pathology report in mail, got my results on the phone on Monday this week.
