Hi

I'm over 6 years out and am doing really well but have had a problem which I thought should be highlighted...............

A couple of months ago I had a problem eating........the food stuck going down..........it got worse so that now I can only eat soup.

I had an endoscopy which showed a blockage...........not cancer..........but a result of scar tissue from radiotherapy.........

I wasn't aware of this risk.........but my rads were near to the oesophagus........my lump was 3 o'clock on the right side.

    Hello maltomlin!!

I am so sorry to read that you are going through this experience NOW....6 years out!!! My goodness - this breast cancer stuff certainly does SUCK!!! On an interesting note, I wanted to let you know that I have been AGONIZING about whether or not to do radiation. In fact, I started a thread for women who are not sure what to do, following mastectomy and where ONLY 1 to 3 nodes were effected (believe it or not, this is a messy topic). Anyway, my gut tells me to go without rads!! You see, it is not "really" known if they will have a great benefit for me, in my particular circumstances....and oddly enough, I somehow stumbled onto YOUR THREAD (posted only 7 minutes ago!!!) and must tell you that it is a bit of a SIGN for me!!! For whatever it's worth....you have helped me and I thank you!!! It is the push I needed to feel better, sleep well and stick to my decision!! I will keep you in my prayers and good wishes. Thank you for posting!!! I sincerely hope this matter is quick and easily repaired for you!!! Quick and painless!!!! You deserve nothing less than this!!! Be well.

    Hi maltomlin,

I have recently had the same issue, only not to the same extent you are and I am a little less than two years out. My rads were partial breast and very high concentration to my lumpectomy site which coincidentally is on the inside part of my breast nearest the esophagus. Not sure if that is what is going on, but I am definitely having some difficulty with swallowing that I never had in my life. I told the RO about this and she said it could happen but is very very rare.

Given the same decision..........it would be the same...........I've had a great 6+ years but had thought it was all behind me........it's not cancer (which is a blessing) and whilst it's not pleasant I can cope with it.

I wouldn't deny radiotherapy.........it serves its purpose...........it depends exactly where the rads are going to be done..............my tumour was very near the oesophogus, so it's obvious that that area will be affected,,,,,,,,,,,rads are very good .............

I'm still glad that I did that.............I feel that I've had another few years and still have many more......
