Genetic testing

I was tested for BRCA in 2009. It was negative. Looks like I have breast cancer in my other breast. Is there additional genetic testing that could be done now? Haven't they discovered a new gene to test? PALB2? Or is this too new to be screened ?

    Hi iwannabefree50,

According to the main Breastcancer.org site's pages on Genetic Testing, while the PALB2 gene abnormality test is newer, it's still possible to be tested for it, among other lesser-known gene abnormalities. Talk to your doctor or a genetic counselor about which tests might be a good idea for your situation.

    We hope this helps!

I met with the genetic counselor today and I am getting tested for 6 things. I can't remember them all but there are more genes than the BRAC that are related to breast cancer. I would see if you can meet with a genetic counsleor.

Yes- there are a few labs doing this now. I'm PALB2+ after being tested in November 2014. My aunt was BRCA negative for 1 & 2 in 2009 but with both her and my mom having breast cancer my genetic counselor thought it was worth testing. After my test returned a positive result my aunt was retested last month just for my gene mutation and was also positive. Lab was done through GeneDx called the Breast/Ovarian Cancer Panel--www.genedx.com/oncology. I'm sorry to hear about your new diagnosis and am hoping for the best for you!!

Hi, Thanks COhockeymom, Your link will give great ammunition to push for further testing. Family stats are awful. My own research said I should be tested for PTEN, Chek2, P53.

This is a link to another BCO thread. It relates to liver Cytochrome450 drug metabolism pathways. It's genetic testing too. But it's testing  for abnormalities in how drugs are metabolized. Differences in metabolism absent, slow, normal, rapid can determine how a drug works in your body.
