Core Biopsy at 22
Hey y'all I'm just a youngster, but I found a mass in my right breast several months ago, and I didn't really think much of it, as my son is still young (almost 2), so I assumed maybe a clogged milk duct (although I am no longer lactating or anything like that). Besides, I was always told young women don't get breast cancer. Anyway, I finally told my mom about it, and she automatically told me to go get a well woman check up to see if I needed any testing or if the lump was cause for concern. Apparently it was, as my doctor told me to get a mammogram that very day. Because of my age, the radiology clinic wanted to do an ultrasound rather than a mammogram, so I went in a couple hours later and had it done. They found the lump on the ultrasound and the technician explained that it could very well just be a cyst. She said, however, that it wasn't black like a cyst should be, so she recommended that I have an aspiration done just to see if it was actually a cyst or not. The doctor looked at the images and also agreed that I should have the procedure. So, a week later, I was back in the same room, where they took images on the ultrasound a second time. Only this time was different. They were using a much better transducer, and the mass looked slightly different than it did last time. It didn't have a bright background anymore, and it looked a little less round than it did before. The technician was still hopeful for a cyst, but when the doctor tried to aspirate it, it didn't budge, so the cyst aspiration turned into a core biopsy. They cut my skin and punched out 4 small samples of the solid mass for testing. When he put them into the little cup of fluid, he said they were floating, which meant the samples contained some fat. He said that meant it could be a lipoma, but the ultrasound image looked nothing like a lipoma. Then, the technician showed me the little pieces of the mass in the cup, and there were little red specks that had sunk (not blood, but actual tissue) and a few white specks that were floating. Anyway, they told me I will have my results on Thursday (tomorrow, March 12th), at 4:40 p.m.. As you can imagine, I have been doing a lot of research trying to decide what my results might be, but obviously I won't know until I read the actual papers. I guess I am just writing this to see if anyone else has had a similar experience at my age and what ended up happening, if anything. My grandma on my mom's side had breast cancer and passed away, and my whole family has a pretty strong history of all kinds of cancer, so I realize it's not an impossibility by any means, but I am also not expecting much from the biopsy. Should I be??
