What does truncal lymphedema feel like?
I had an axillary node dissection in May of 2014 w/ 15 lymph nodes removed. The recovery from that portion of my surgery was miserable as I have read many are. I am happy to say that with Physical Therapy I did get my range of motion back and per my therapist have not had measurable swelling in my arm. The problem is something is still not "right". This will probably sound stupid but the back of my arm and upper back feel weird all the time. Yes it is numb in these areas but that isn't it. My therapist seems dismissive of my complaints and I feel frustrated. I have an arm sleeve that I got during treatment and wear it frequently because as soon as I put it on I feel relief in the back of my arm but as soon as I take it off the sensation is the same there and remains continuous in my back (right side latissimus area). I feel lopsided and acutely aware of this feeling almost all of the time. The BMX has been traumatic enough but as many have said before this SE from rx is the worst. Any ideas to help or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. thank you

InGod'shands, you've pretty well described what truncal lymphedema feels like. Since the arm sleeve seems to offer some relief, you might want to try a compression bra or cami and see if that eases the discomfort in your trunk. I use a WearEase Slimmer cami, but there are other options as well (Spanx, for one--and hopefully others will be along with their suggestions).
It's difficult to see truncal swelling, partly because it can be diffuse, and partly because our "geography" has changed so much from treatment. One thing to check would be if your bra bands and straps leave marks on that side of your body when you take it off. There's more information about truncal lymphedema here:

Please do keep us posted and let us know how we can help.Gentle hugs,

I had undiagnosed truncal LE for several months before I found a therapist who could help me. Like you, I had a hard time effectively explaining the sensation to my doctors. Every time I took off my sports bra, it felt like the area under my armpit on my side swelled up immediately. It was extremely uncomfortable. Most everyone I asked about it just said, "Well, you've had breast surgery and ALND, so of course you're going to feel some pain.....blah, blah, blah."
I went to two different clinics and had 4 different PTs try to help me with the swelling in my arm, side, as well as rotator cuff issues - to no avail. In fact, they made it worse. When I finally found a good lymphedema specialist nearly 9 months after my BMX, she confirmed the swelling in my trunk. She did what no one else had done - she measured me. I saw her once a week for several weeks. She did some gentle PT and massage, and instructed me to wear my compression camisole 24/7 for several weeks. Since I had swelling in my arm that had been there for awhile, she showed me how to wrap with bandages until it went down. I worked diligently to do exactly what she instructed me to do at home as far as exercises, general precautions, diet, and self care.
I can't say enough about finding the right therapist. I eventually gained complete ROM and the pain and swelling is gone. I was so thrilled! LE is forever, but if it does flare up, I know what to do. I just put on my sleeve and / or camisole, do a little light massage, and it really helps.
Good luck to you!

ingodshands: Trying looking at your back in the mirror,, especially after you take off your bra, if you wear one. Does the ALND side look bigger,, more swollen,, compared to the other side? That may be one way to tell. It seems to be hard for most health care professionals to diagnose truncal LE. With an arm, it is much easier to do measurements and compare to the other arm. Not so easy with truncal. And Binney's suggestion about looking for marks from your bra is another good idea.I use Breast Binders from EAB Medical. Compression bras are not easy for me due to some shoulder issues. I do sometimes wear WearEAse compression bra.
I think I first really noticed that I was having an issue when I noticed that wearing a MX bra with prosthetic made the area feel better by putting pressure on the area. (this is not true for everyone) It was giving me some compression which made me feel better.
I hope that you can find another therapist,,, trained in LE therapy who can help you.

Hi Binney, thank you so much for your reply. I am happy and sad at the answer if that makes sense. I am happy because it feels good to hear some validation that I am not just imagining this. Frustrated that I have been complaining about it to my doctors for sometime now with no one seeming that interested and sad to have to admit to myself that I have a problem like LE. It is such a miserable side effect. I never imagined. But I guess the sooner I can get help the faster I can feel better. I googled the cami you mentioned and plan to order asap. Do they run true to size/measurement? They seem pretty strict on the returns so I'm just trying to get it right the first time. Any other suggestions are welcomed. Thank you again for your help. I will let you know how it turns out.

bc 101 and glennie - hi and thank you
I am so happy to "talk" to other ladies that understand. I seriously thought it was just me because no matter how I have tried to describe this to my docs I haven't gotten anywhere. Anyway I will try to pay attention to my back May try wearing a bra (I haven't started on regular basis yet) to see if I see markings. Visually it might be kinda hard to tell but I definitely feel lopsided thanks agai

InGodshands, I sure do get it about the "happy and sad" feelings. None of this is easy, but I promise it gets easier once you find the help you need. Steep learning curve, but like BC101 you'll soon have your life back in control again with the skills you need to keep it that way.
As for compression camis, I find with all compression garments that the black and darker colors are somewhat tighter than the beige and lighter colors. I wear a small in a beige cami, a medium in a black cami. That said, the beige WearEase Slimmer does run true to size, but their compression T-shirt runs smaller. I don't know whether you have a Hanger Orthotics in your area, but they handle WearEase products, and if you go through a company like they can run interference for you on returns. Or call an on-line company like BandagesPlus and check out their return policy.
Keep us posted, please! Gentle hugs,

ingodshands. Hi and welcome. I totally validate your feelings and we all know the frustration you are feeling. You will have good days and bad days. The last few days I just want to leave my glove off and feel free but the little voice in the background says to put it on so I do. I know if I dont' "follow the LE rules" that LE will rule me.Still once in a while we do become rebellious and that is so normal dealing with this beast. Stick with us because I find that if we group together we tend to manage our le better.
My truncal feels" full like" and I have a feeling of a rubbery boiled egg at the back of my pit. I know my limits and when things feel to full thats when I wear my compression tees/cami to bed with a swell spot (channeled foam that moves lymph) and of course during the day compressin cami. No tight band band allowed! I try to do more exercise when I have a flare because it seems to take the fluid out for me. I find if I saw my arms back in forth while I walk and move my shoulder blades while sawing it takes the full feeling away,
Do post and we will work thru your le problems.
-
I'm glad I found this topic, I have been undiagnosed for three YEARS! That said, I figured it out myself. Yes. I was measured and told how to massage the area, I actually have a piece of foam I insert over the arm pit area. So, my complaint is the compression cami is binding to a point of inhibiting my breathing. I have about 20 camis, all kinds! Ha, does anyone else have this problem? I'm glad I'm here really, LE and all.

I had a lumpectomy and only three modes removed and my breast was even with the untreated side when I healed from surgery. I had rads up the wazoo due to my stage 3, with an armpit lit up at the time of my diagnosis and also one affected node behind my breastbone that was not feasible for removal.
After flying back and forth to Hawaii a months after rads ended I noticed my breast swelling had increased. I then had to help lift my 8yo son and tweaked something and my armpit swelled up.
My regular massage therapist shares office space with someone who does lymphatic massage (I'll refer to her as my LT for lymphatic therapist) so I saw her and also my physical therapist and they have been helping me figure out this post treatment maze.
My LT, in addition to doing manual drainage on me is helping teach me self-care including how and where my body is able to drain the excess fluid with my help. Having that mapped out specific for my body is invaluable.
The rads muscle damage and resulting restriction triggered my old whiplash injuries (1987, 2000) in the past two weeks and that was impeding drainage such that my left arm was swollen some in back. Understanding how other scar tissue in my body affects the lymphatic flow is also so helpful as then I know what needs to be worked on.
The stagnant protein-rich lymph is what will eventually lead to fibrosis in the affected area, also fatty deposits, and contributes to atrophy. Having a well-informed maintenance plan and support team is what hopefully will get my body the distance. At age 44 I've still got a lot of life to live yet
-
Binney, I found out I do have a Hanger Orthotics in my area. That is wonderful and I will definitely check them out. They list their hours Mon-Fri so I will go by early next week. Thank you for the tips on sizing also. Will be so helpful to know when buying. There is such a steep learning curve to all of this !! I find myself really anxious to try them it has been so long since feeling balanced Thanks !! Will keep you poste
-
hugz4u thank you! The support of you ladies is amazing !! I wish I would have posted sooner but so glad I have now. I am so hopeful that these Camis will help. I haven't felt relief from this sensation in so long I don't know what I'll do if it works. I appreciate your descriptions I'll keep posting updates and as I try to figure out my personal formula
-
agness, it sounds like you have a great team and a great action plan for dealing with your LE, and that's really heartening to read. I wish everyone had such great resources at hand! Good for you, for working to get the best help and quite obviously investing yourself in listening, implementing, etc.
Flying tends to aggravate my truncal issues if I'm not in some kind of compression. I wear a shaper cami, or better yet (when wardrobe can cover it), a compression T shirt, no bra underneath. I don't think the T shirt would work if I had breast LE, because without cups, there's no real compression on the inner portions of the breasts. But my truncal issue is on my side under the pit, extending around to the back, and the compression T works well--cami works ok.
I know I've really overdone something and/or did not have adequate compression when it feels like I have a hard-boiled egg within my armpit. Usually that means I also have a weird burning sensation on my side/back truncal areas.
-
Hi Ladies. Just found out that the Hanger clinic in my area doesn't handle any compression garments with the exception of Jobst stockings. The lady there also told me that there techs are no longer certified as fitters. What the heck .... Seems like big missed opportunity for them. Gonna order online - will keep you posted hope everyone is having a good week
-
The Hanger by me was a woeful experience, too. I wonder if these are franchises. Some women here have had great experience with them. I find them not helpful in the least. The whole garment experience is so frustrating!
-
Hangers are individually managed but have regional control. There is a great one nearby and another one where I had to tell the person what to order and what size. Huge range of experience from one to the next.
I went there for short stockings and the lady tried to convince me the S stood for short when it was small.
-
The garment experience is tough, even with a well trained person. The LE supply store in the cancer center where I live only orders from 2 manufacturers and neither had a compression cami or a supportive compression bra in fact the "compression bra" from one manufacturer had absolutely no support and I would have been bouncing worse than with a tight t-shirt on. I ended up figuring it out on my own using a mastectomy bra that wasn't meant for compression and a Genie cami.
This isn't easy, and it should be, we deserve easy.
-
I ordered the Amoena Patricia compression bra. It was SSS. Was great the first 2 weeks when I had a seroma. Was sort of Ok the 2nd month when I filed it in with felt pads to put pressure on the spots. Now it's too loose at the top to do any good. If the swelling was mid trunk it might be helpful, but mine is under the arm and where people flub out of their bra in front of the armpit. Also using a Genie cami or a sport bra. If anyone wants to try a 36 B/C. Patricia I will pass it I exchange for the postage
-
We really do deserve easy after all this I agree. But alas the learning continues. Just glad I found you guys to help navigate the path and share ideas. I have ordered from wearease. Wondering if any of you ladies have ever tried the Tommy Copper shirts ? I feel like I am constantly thinking of some way to get comfortable and I just saw their ad. Please let me know if any of you have tried them. Thanks
-
I am going to join this group. I have mild truncal LE under the arm and around towards the back. It is not really noticeable to see, but I can feel it. Sometimes very slight fullness in the upper arm as well. I have a sleeve, but now think I need a compression bra too. I have looked online but all the ones I am finding are for post MX and don't seem designed for everyday wear long term. Any suggestions? I have tried the Wearease compression tank, but their smallest size doesn't really give me much compression. I am also waiting for shipment of a couple sizes on Nike compression t-shirts to see if they will help. I have tried Spanx and other compression camis, but they are too tight in the abdomen and don't really give compression in the upper back area where I need it. I am scheduled to fly in about a month and feel like I really need to find something that works before then. Thanks in advance!
-
Hi Bren,, this is the bra that I use. http://www.curediva.com/shop-by-product/bras/post-surgery-bras/compression-bra-by-wear-ease.html?ref=merchant&gclid=CO35iq2toMQCFZeJaQodkjMASw#sthash.Jb4iBPO4.dpbs I am petite,, and it was difficult to find a bra small enough to fit me and give me some compression. You can wear it everyday. Look for sales!! I managed to get mine on curediva for $72. Visit their site, and Facebook them if you do that,, and they will email you coupons and discounts. All of the compression tees and camis that I tried did not fit me properly. They were too tight under the arm or across the abdomen or something. What I mostly live in are breast binders from EAB Medical. It kinda squashs my remaining breast but not enough that it is uncomfortable for me. They also have binder bras. If you try the binders, get the LINED ones. More soft!http://www.eabmedical.com/index.php?cPath=1&osCsid=37quhv1ndfa8n80no382hc5976
Oh, I just looked and saw you had recon,,, so the bra from EAB Medical might be better for you. I also use Swell spots to put compression in the area that I need. It helps to give you compression where you need it w/o compressing the other side of your body. Truncal is a pain!!
-
Adding to the pick, this bra is like a tank http://www.titlenine.com/product/313801.do?sortby=ourPicksAscend&refType=&from=fn#.VQBj5rHD-Uk (70.00) and I like this one called a compression sports bra http://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=438484042&vid=1&locale=en_US&kwid=1&sem=false&sdReferer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.athleta.com%2Fproducts%2Fsports-bras.jsp (only 50.00) but I haven't ordered that one yet. There are only so many bras I can buy in 1 month, maybe next month.
I'm still happy with the Genie Slimming Cami, I ordered a size smaller and can actually wear it without a bra underneath it for a not so bouncy day ( no driving). I'm washing it with my regular laundry and it has accidentally gone through a dryer cycle. After 2 months it's still like new.
I also tried the WearEase compression bra. Useless for someone with LE in the breast, I can't even figure out what it's for. The only place it was compressing was the bottom band and it actually hurt. I bounced with every movement.
I haven't tried binders yet, I don't know if I can. The word binder sounds like a midieval tourture device.
-
Susan, I have to say binders are not torture! I live in mine. Be sure and get the LINED ones if you do try. Depending on how big your breasts are, you might find them more uncomfortable than I do. (one gone, remaining one small) EAB Medical does have a compression bra, but I found that the bottom band was really tight and uncomfortable, and my LE therapist was concerned that it would cause lymph to pool, so I'm ditched it. -
Thanks ladies. Some of these I know won't work because I need full back compression and the bras that cut in, like sports bras, cut right across where I need the compression. Likewise with the breast binders. I will look into the genie cami's and the compression bras.
-
Hi Ladies. Thought I would give a quick update. I am still waiting on my wearease products as they were on back order. I did try the Tommie Copper shirts but they do not provide enough compression. So frustrating trying to get relief as well as just developing a routine for dressing.

So i thought i had truncal lymphedwma but it was just the seroma It went down in the 8 months post BMX
I went to PT for my shoulder in Dec and she was also a certifited lymmphedema therapist Said i didnt have lymphedema but taught me self massage for when i fly
Fast forward to Thursday. Lifting gallon jugs of water and a couple of hours later my arm pit swelled up and ached like it was exploding into my pec area. I hope i caught ut in time. Have been doing drainage massage every few hours for 2 days and its almost gone. Dont knuw if this was a warning episode or if i now have a permanent issue like my friend whos arm got it after a bee sting. Feel bummed that i screwed myself up mor
-
Chloesmom: hugs! It's hard to know what we do that sets off LE. It could be anything. Glad that you recognized it quickly and have been doing MLD. How is it now?
-
thank Glennie! Have it wrapped up and it no longer hurts. Just feels a bit heavy.
