Post Mastectomy w/ Direct Implants Strange Sensations

I'm almost 4 weeks post bilateral mastectomy with direct implants, nipple sparing, IMF incisions, and I'm having the strangest sensations. I've googled every adjective I can think of and scanned pages from this board but I'm finding nothing. It started 2 weeks ago feeling like golf ball size balls of fluid moving from my armpit to the front of my chest. My PS looked and felt nothing though. Now it feels like little balls of fluid moving primarily behind my nipples. Sometimes it even feels like the implant popping bubbles (best way I can describe it). All of this is most prevelant when I'm moving around. Any ideas? Holding my breasts firmly seems to reduce the sensation

Hi! I had BMX, direct to implants last April. I felt like I had aliens in my chest! I kept looking down my shirt to see if my breasts were moving! During the first two weeks, it felt like the sensation you have when you're lactating. The PS said it was nerves reconnecting. By week three, the "movement" kept me awake at night. The PS prescribed Valium because I was having muscle spasms. I'm not big on taking drugs, but Valium stopped the night spasms and helped me sleep. After I returned to work, like you, it felt like fluid was moving around. It was worse if I ate salty foods. PS confirmed this at my 8 week check up. Due to the node removal, fluid was trying to re-route. Try a low salt diet and see if that helps.

Thank you for the reply! My brain seems to have finally decided to interpret what I'm feeling. I'm now describing it as the nipples feeling unattached. I have no idea if that's "normal". It's intresting that you mentioned the muscles spasms, I've been having cramps in the pectoral muscle the last few days which is highly uncomfortable.

TealWarrior: I had my NSPBMX on Jan 21st with direct implants and fat grafting and I cannot stand the constant cramping in my pec muscles. I have no pain/discomfort from the mid-breast area and down...but the upper poles feel squeezed sooooo tight at times that it feels like the implants are going to pop out through my collarbone and armpits. The valium really does not seem to help. One thing I discovered that seems to help is slightly heating my microwaveable rice neck wrap. It only extends to the upper part of my chest but the pressure and the warmth definitely calm things down. I've been wearing the darn thing all day for the past 48 hours. My PS thought I should be ready to go back to work next week (week 4 post-op) but I could cry thinking about getting through a full day with the 26 very busy first graders I teach! How long does this sensation last? Do you work and if so....are you back yet?

    Hey Dmarie,

Looks like I'm about 9 days ahead of you. So far I've been walking off the cramping but the gentle heat sounds like a good option too.

My dr wrote my leave for 6 weeks. I can't imagine going back yet, mosly because I can't lift ANYTHING without pain. Holding a grande coffee causes muscles spasms and pain in my chest. Are you able to lift any weight yet

Yikes! Does everyone have muscle spasms like that? That's really scary!

Everyone is different but from what I understand direct implants are a bit tougher in the beginning because the pec muscles are immediately stretched further than with TE. However TE are hard and not squishy like implants so the expansion process can be very uncomfortable. I'd like to hear from more direct implant patients to see when their spasms/tightness began to diminish. I only experience spasms and tightness along my upper poles.

TealWarrior: I can't lift much of anything yet without discomfort. Growing impatient!

BMX 7/3/14. Left one popped out of pocket on the way to my hospital room. Reconstruction of it on 7/22/14. A lot of strange sensations, gurgling, itching even though I'm numb. Tightness is severe. Swelling & valley midline along muscle, still. Severe muscle cramps. PT is helping.

I am 2 years post op of receiving implants, you get used to the numbness and forget their there. The only thing I always have is pain along sides where incision is and under arm/pectoral muscle, pinching and sonetimes throbbing. I think it is because the lymph nodes we're taken on that side so it will never be the same. It almost feels likes something cutting I into the circulation an you feel tingling in fingers. I hope that's normal

Dmarie... wondering how things are working out for you.  I too had nsbmx 2/13 and the tightness is awful. It's so difficult sleeping and I can't stand the feeling when they move. In addition, they look and feel like rocks!

Jilly59: I am doing really well now but it took 5 weeks to get there. The change was pretty much overnight....rock hard tightness and spasms to barely noticing them. The only time I really feel them is when I get cold...the pecs seem to clamp down around the implants but it is no longer painful...just uncomfortable. Are you stretching several times each day? Also, if you read one of my above posts, I found a lot of comfort with the heat and weight of my microwaveable rice pack. I made sure it wasn't extra hot and I didn't let it cover the implants. You are not quite a month out...give it another week or so and I bet you'll be turning the corner.

Dmarie...I have a heating pad on the back of my chair and that helps. I will definitely try the shoulders! Did you have direct to implant at your bmx?

I did have direct implants placed along with fat grafting done the day of mastectomy.

I had nsbmx with direct implants in November, and it took about six weeks until that tight feeling started to fade. I found it helped me to sleep better if I took a warm shower before bedtime -- really seemed to relax the muscles. Sometimes it felt like a steel band wrapped around my chest, but that feeling does fade over time. By the three-month mark, most of the swelling was gone and they were feeling more normal. So hang in there -- it feels weird at first, but you will adapt to them.

DMarie... so I am now 6 weeks post op. Still have tightness. I'm a little miffed that no one has said anything to me ever about post op exrecises or activity restrictions. Also, I wish I had known about fat grafting prior to surgery as none was done. I have dents, rippling, etc...and don't see that going away.  The thought of another surgery to fix this sickens me. The incision under my areola opened 2 weeks ago so I'm having healing issues.

    Thoughts?

jilly59...so sorry you are dealing with issues. How severe is your tightness? I still feel a little tighter at night but it is hardly noticeable. If it continues, you may want to ask your PS for a scipt for physical therapy. I did the exercises on the Sloan Kettering website...another patient on this website had posted the link. I still have some rippling on my right and knew upfront that direct implants typically do not yield a perfect end product. From what I understand, most women will need an additional procedure to fix problem areas. However, the second surgery is never as difficult of a recovery as the mastectomy and implant placement. Another reason I believe I am more comfortable is that I had very small implants placed (only 265ccs). I will increase my breast size with large volume fat grafting in a few months. My PS does a lot of revision work for women who are uncomfortable with their implants. He replaces them with smaller implants and does large volume fat grafting. He says that in over 95% of cases....the discomfort/pain resolves. I think it too early for you to tell how these foreign objects are really going to feel in the longrun. Give it a few months...it may resolve on it's own. If it doesn't...know there are options.

DMarie... Where in PA is your PS located?  My Sientra anatomicals card says 450...yikes. I look like a B cup. I don't like that they're so hard. I am seriously considering fat grafting as much as I hate the OR but think I have to wait a year for revisions?  I'm hoping it will not only fix the ripples but give me more of a squishiness factor.

I still have the rubber band tightness but not nearly as bad as before.  I do not yet have full range of motion.

My PS is Dr. Louis Bucky at Penn Hospital in Philly. My implants feel soft but it could be because I had fat grafting done over my pec muscles. I am a small B right now. My left breast looks great but my right has some rippling. That is the side I had 3 lumpectomies and 6 biopsies on...so I'm not sure if that is part of the problem.

DMarie...I am in south central PA, daughter in Philly. I may have to look him up. My PS never said anything about fat-grafting. I have issues with the cancer side and at some point a revision of some sort will be necessary. Sigh.

So yesterday it was back to BS since PS out of town. I now have another small area of dehiscence, same incision. It's been 6 weeks! We have a Florida vacation planned end of May and I'm getting worried.  My non-cancer side (right) has healed well. Wonder if they make something waterproof to cover it.  I remember a product from years ago called Op Site that was like a self-adhering saran wrap.

Wonder if any summer surgery sisters know?

I am 5 weeks post op and am now having muscle spasms that are quite painful. I had these the first week after surgery before but was taking muscle relaxers which really helped.
