I got my MRI results. Now awaiting BX.

Well. Here we go again. This time in the left breast. I had a mastectomy 6 years ago on the right because I had widespread, high-grade DCIS. Currently I had a negative mammogram in September. About 8 weeks ago I started having itching and nipple discharge when expressed. I had an ultrasound that showed "debris in the ducts." Then I had an MRI . Today they called to say that I need a biopsy guided with MRI. The report said " high uptake of contrast, assymmetry, and extensive areas of pathology throughout much of the medial half of the breast, perhaps even extending posteriorly." The nurse said, " I need to prepare you that this is most likely DCIS, according to the report."

SO now I have to wait EIGHT days to get in for a biopsy. And then wait for the results from that. I can already tell you that I have some form of breast cancer.

We are booked to go to Florida for Spring Break with lots of money tied up in a non-refundable trip with our kids, leaving 20 days from now and being gone a week. I'm worried about whether delaying a lumpectomy or mastectomy by 2 or 3 weeks could change my prognosis! I would feel terrible if I went on vacation and then ended up with positive nodes or invasive cancer! I would feel like I should have rushed the surgery.

Anybody have similar thoughts of timing of surgeries?

    I'm so sorry for the unfortunate timing. I can really identify with your dilemma. However, I really doubt that delaying your surgery for a few weeks would make any difference (for most cancers). If I were in your shoes, with DCIS being a possible diagnosis, I'd go on the trip and hope I can turn down my anxiety.

    first I will wish upon you a benign biopsy.....

    About the trip, that's a tough one. I have a biopsy on Wednesday (after a 12 day wait) and even though my calcifications were deemed mildly suspicious I am hesitating to book a winter holiday for next winter....just in case.

    But, the holiday will be over in a month....I don't think that is too long but I am certainly no expert! I know I would be wanting surgery ASAP if it were me....really a hard call. No travel insurance?

    When is your biopsy? If it is eight days from today I think taking your holiday will work. I will be thinking of you ....do take care

    Yep. Same deal. I found on on Jan 20. I have been running around getting second and third opinions. We have plans for spring break and I didn't want to disappoint the kids. I asked the doctor if I could wait until early April to do anything and he said physically yes but maybe not mentally. I am meeting with an oncologist (number 2) tomorrow and getting a port on thursday. My BS wants me to have chemo first. I haven't officially cancelled the trip yet. I am waiting to see when they will schedule my first chemo. I booked a trip on a credit card that has travel insurance included. We'll see if they figure out a way to weasel out of paying somehow. Can you check your credit card coverage? Have you asked the doctor if waiting for treatment is an option?

    From date of diagnosis until date of surgery for me me, it was 2 months. Your timing seems like it would be about a month from now, so that doesn't seem bad. You can try to get on the schedule for as soon as you get back. And if for some reason the doctor feels like you can't wait, they will tell you.

    Can you call and ask to be put on a cancellation list, in case something earlier comes up?

    Is there another radiologist in town who you'd trust to do the biopsy who could perhaps do it earlier?

    Can you call them and let them know your situation and history, and see if they can get you in sooner?


    If none of those work, I would just try and go on my vacation and enjoy it as best I could. Perhaps ask for an anti-anxiety Rx if necessary.

    Ok. Thanks for all the input. They seem to want me in quickly as ,I am on the cancellation list in case an opening for my biopsy happens. Just fretting.

    when I had a very suspicious mammo, a BIRADS 5, they wanted to schedule it right away. I had a special family vacation all planned and paid for, and we were leaving in 3 weeks. My doctor said most breast cancers when found, have been there for 6-10 years , and most grow very slowly, so he said it was fine to go on the vacation and have the biopsy when I returned. Said it was "OK to wait several weeks, just not several months", and said it would not change anything. I'm glad I went on that vacation, it gave me time to enjoy with my family and not obsess over the "what-ifs", and it didn't change the outcome at all.Ask your doctor, if he says it's OK, then go and have a good time!
