Just diagnosed, looking for surgeon in Northern NJ or NYC
Hello. I was just diagnosed with breast cancer yesterday. Needless to say, I am terrified, but I think the initial shock is easing. I am now focusing on getting the right treatment. My biopsy was positive and it spread to a lymph node. My doctor put me in touch with Dr. Rachel Wellner, a breast surgeon at Hackensack University Medical Center. I have an appointment next Friday (the 13th!). Has anyone ever heard of her or had any experience at HUMC? Can anyone recommend a breast surgeon in the Northern NJ or NYC area? Thank you in advance.

Welcome to BCO, but we're sorry you had to come here. Often after the long wait for results, the feeling of control returns and you feel stronger. What was your actual diagnosis as it helps with responses from those with similar Dx, treatment and hence surgeons.
All the best

Thank you for your response. I had a routine mammogram which led to a sonogram which led to a biopsy and aspiration of the lymph nodes. My doctor called me with the news and put me in touch with a surgeon. What I have been told so far by the surgeon (that I am schedule to meet with next week) is that the tumor is malignant and it has spread into one lymph node. I have not had further testing to find out if it has spread further than that. The surgeon said once we meet she will send me for further testing. Based on what I've researched, I am guessing that I have stage 2 since it is in the lymph nodes. She also mentioned survival rate being about 85%. That is all I know at this point until my meeting next week. I would like to get names of other recommended surgeons I can consult with. I am sitting on pins and needles waiting...

Wenben, welcome and sorry you are here. There is so much you will learn as you proceed, first being that breast cancer is not just one disease, but there are many different types and therefore many different treatments. Keep in mind that Dr. GOOGLE does not always give the most accurate information. Many of the studies you will read online are outdated.
Try to keep calm. Prayers for you.

Wenben, I live in NYC, recently had a lumpectomy, and am happy to recommend my surgeon to you. I'll send you a private message tomorrow with her contact info.
Hang in there! These situations are scary for sure, but they get less so as we find out more information and are able to take action. -
Hi wenben, I am in Somerset County, just south of Morristown. My doctors are out of Morristown Memorial hospital. BUT - I understand that the cancer center in Hackensack hospital is excellent! I am sure you will be in good hands.
Stick around, this is an awesome community!

Larkspur. I just had a lumpectomy at MSK in NYC Monday. Live on Long Island. Did u have to have radiation?
I am in nervous mode since my post op and consult is next Tuesday and I am praying I will just need radiation
-
Florida, my lumpectomy was three weeks ago at Lenox Hill Hosp.; this coming Monday, I'll meet with a radiation onc. also at LHH to set up that process. And I've seen a medical onc.who ordered the Oncotype Dx test to see if I would benefit from chemo also; I too am hoping that just radiation--and hormonal therapy--will suffice. Fingers crossed for both of us!

I have no personal experience with Dr Ansanelli but have read about him and if I lived close I would definitely check him out and his laser methods! !!

I also had my surgery performed by Dr. Ansanelli. He is amazing and I highly recommend him as well! I live in California and flew all the way to New York to have him perform my mastectomy.
He is highly recommended by even his fellow doctors in Plainview, NY for any women who have lumps or diagnosed with breast cancer.
In fact, I had LESS PAIN after his mastectomy procedure via laser than the traditional lumpectomy (with a knife) that was performed a year earlier.
The only thing that was a real pain was that his laser procedure was not covered by health insurance even though I had a PPO. I believe I paid out of pocket about $13,500 for the mastectomy and for the anesthesiologist.
But I had a $5,000 deductible that I had not met yet anyways, so I feel like I paid an extra $8,500 for less pain and suffering and some extra benefits.
You see the mastectomy was performed in Dr. Ansanelli's office, not in the hospital. That is great because you have less risk of getting an infection. More sick people in the hospital, the greater your risk of getting an infection.
After the procedure, I went back to my hotel! I was able to take a nap. I woke up from my nap and was able to take short walk...all in the same day as my surgery.
My wound only drained for 2 days before it was taken out. When I got back to California four days after the mastectomy, I was able to drive myself and was able to go back to work a week later.
Dr. Ansanelli is just an amazing man and his laser technique is just amazing procedure. I was blessed to have found him when I did. No other surgeon does surgery like him.

my surgeon was Susan McManus out of St Peters in New Brunswick, however since I worked in Hackensack, about a mile from Hackie hospital, I chose to do my rads there. Wonderful hospital, I have Donna MacNamara for my MO and RO was Loreen Godfry. I was very comfortable with both.
Since I am now about 7 years out, guess they did their job!

Hi there -- just saw your post and I'm sorry you have to be here. I am in Northern NJ and am being treated out of Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ. My breast surgeon is Dr. Laura Klein and I am very pleased with how everything has been so far. She is a great gal, very compassionate and takes her time with you. I recommend that on your first visit with anyone regarding bc that you bring a tape recorder with you. It helps so much because your head is spinning on the first visit and to listen after is very helpful. Good luck and if you need any more help, just give us a shout.

I had my BMX almost 4 years ago next month . My breast surgeon was DR Amber Guth at NYU Med Center. Very nice, very competent .Another good doc there is Dr Freya Schnauble. My oncologist is also at NYU , Dr Julia Smith. I live in Northern NJ and hear only good things about Hackensack Hosp. I went there for my PT following my BMX. I highly recommend the place. If you live anywhere near Ridgewood NJ come on by to our support group ,Tennis For Life , at the Ridgewood Racquet club on Sundays for 1-3 pm.Fantastic group of ladies and you will receive free tennis lessons and have some fun!!

Doc Babs -- just saw your post. My kids live in Tenafly. I just wondered how you were doing on the Aromasin. I just started Aridimex tonight. Trying something a little bit different. Neo adjuvant hormonal therapy hoping to shrink some of what is in my left breast before surgery. So -- reading all the posts on enzyme therapy and the potential side effects is a little scary but this whole disease is. Tennis used to be my passion -- great sport. I played the singles leagues in Washington Twp. But my hip started to be tricky so I gave it up for other kinds of exercise which are kinder to my body. Wish I played now -- your Sunday group sounds great.
