Looking for advise on Toronto surgeon

Hi.My mom was recently diagnosed with BC. She has had a lumpectomy but they found more under her nipple area and recommend a masectomy. She is currently at Mackenzie Health with Dr Steven Jackson. I'm a bit concerned that it's a regional hospital and wondering if anyone has experience with Dr Jackson? My parents feel it is "bad" to change doctors at this stage (they are "off the boat" European) but I want to make sure she has a good surgeon. I wondering if moving to princess Margaret or sunny brook is better? ( please note that the people at Mackenzie health have been great, I just want what's best for my mom). Any advise or comments are welcome. This is very overwhelming right now as we just received the news yesterday

Thanks, Liz

Hi Liz, it's great your being an advocate for your Mom. I travel 2 hours one way to be seen at Sunnybrook. There is nothing wrong with getting a second opinion. My BS is Dr. F. Wright and I'm very pleased with her. Everyone there is top notch. You will probably need a referral from your Moms PCP, but would not be a problem.

There are many good surgeons at regional hospitals. I live in Toronto so didn't have to travel far. I went to Dr. Claire Holloway at Sunnybrook. She is excellent.

leezat. Does your mom want reconstruction? If so, you need to consider which hospitals do what type. I had my lumpectomy at North York General, but switched to Toronto General for my mastectomy because I wanted flap reconstruction and only a few hospitals do that type of reconstruction

Hi Liz, I had a lumpectomy in 1997 at St. Joe's in Toronto. It was my surgeon who sent me to Princess Margaret Hospital for a followup because he wanted to make sure enough tissue had been removed. I saw Dr David McCready who performed a second lumpectomy to increase the margins and ordered radiation therapy. He is fabulous - highly respected in the world of breast cancer and he is still there

    hi Leezat

There are many great surgeons, oncologists and pain specialists at McKenzie Health. I have lived ten years since being diagnosed thanks to the doctors there. Dr Bhat was my surgeon and Dr Ng my oncologist. The hospital has fantastic staff from the technicians that run those machines to the lab assistants, I have found them all to be exceptional. Go with your gut and stay by your moms side, that will help her immensely. And always ask questions even if you are afraid of what the answer mat be.

good luck and if you have any more questions about McKenzie Health just ask me.
