hello. I am a five breast cancer survivor I have never been tested for brca1 or2. But have read they can be related to melenoma. My brother has recently be diagnosed with stage 3 modular melenoma. Just wondering if anyone has any information on related mutations. Thanks stef5

NE, I have been told by my oncologist that my BRCA2 puts me at a higher risk of melanoma. I have read this as well. I am actually going to a dermatologist next month for a full body scan due to some moles changing recently. There is a definite link to the BRCA mutation..

My dermatologist told me there is a link between breast cancer and melanoma. He told me to do a full body check in his office.

Here is one link regarding multiple genes. I'm trying to find the other link which had a spreadsheet table listing the gene mutations across cancers. It showed for example, a particular gene associated with breast cancer, melanoma and colon cancer risk.

I think somewhere there is a genetic/environmental component to my family's problems. My 45 year old sister has melanoma and she has dark hair and medium skin - so what are the odds that both of us would get a malignancy? My dad has prostate cancer, my uncle died of stomach cancer at age 40, and my grandparents died of cancer (stomach and ovarian). They live in a farming community on land in the family since the 1700's, The chemicals those companies dump on our food crops by the hundreds of gallons is staggering. I think the water table has gotten poisoned and our DNA damaged.

I believe there's a genetic link in at least some instances. Lots of cancer in my family -- sister and I both bc; 2 first cousins w/bc; Dad colon cancer, and a few of his many siblings had various cancers; and my brother had a melanoma removed from his leg. No BRCA or other known mutation, but I'd be shocked if that much cancer was coincidental.

I have heard of a connection of BC and having lots of moles, and having lots of moles leaves you open to melanoma? - if that makes sense.

New2bc ... Thanks for posting that link. I have had skin cancer regularly removed since I was 29. The link you posted commented that there was a 29% greater risk of melanoma in breast cancer patients. That scares me, as well as the genetic component. In my immediate family, we have breast, colon, melanoma, basal cell skin cancer, pancreatic and esophageal cancer.

I have regular full body checks by my dermatologist every six months and she checks every single sq. inch of skin. It sucks ... she's always burning or cutting something off of me.

hello. Just wanted to update this post. I had genetic testing it came back negative. The counselor thought it was interesting how my family seems to have many with some type of cancer. I think we have a bad gene in my family but they have not found it. Since this postvhave had close family pop up with cancer of different types. But everyone is doing great. Ste

I have had 5 basal cell skin cancers removed starting when I was 25. I'm scheduled for 6 month full body checks with my derm doc. She always freezes at 10-15 pre-cancers. And maybe once a year I end up with a biopsy. This has been standard for more than 20 years.
Interesting that the first full body scan after chemo, she said my skin was gorgeous. No pre-cancerous lesions, no problems. I told her that she probably didn't want to recommend the treatment to her other patients.

Even though this thread is old, thanks for the info that skin cancer may be related. I'll certainly ask my derm doc when I see her the end of the montn.
