There was some research done 10 years comparing Mediterranean diets to the standard American diet. The Mediterranean was deemed better (no surprise there). They attributed some of the success to the polyphenols in olive oil. Specifically, a polyphenol called oleocanthal. It was found to exert a potent, ibuprofen-like activity, essentially down-regulating the inflammatory-promoting genes. Since inflammation is a key event in cancer development, lowering the inflammatory process makes sense.

So... what does this mean in the real world?
Will folks start consuming more raw, uncooked olive oil?

Also, is there a section of the forum dedicated to the category of "food science"?
or are these food subjects started under the umbrella of "Alternative Medicine" or "Complementary and Holistic Medicine and Treatment"?

thanks for posting, I beli diet is crucial, we are killing ourselves with to much processed foods and beverages. It makes sense to keep things simple and free from contamination, artificial ingredients etc

Re: olive oil. Make sure you're getting what you pay for.

"Found to have been fraudulently labeled as Extra-Virgin:

Whole Foods, Rachel Ray, Safeway,  Newman's Own,  Colavita,  Bertolli, Filippo Berio, Pompeian Star, Carapelli, Mezzetta, Mazzola

Found to be accurately labeled as Extra-Virgin:

Kirkland Organic, Corto Olive, California Olive Ranch,  McEvoy Ranch Organic"

leggo... Take that with a grain of salt. I imagine you are getting that info from Mary Vance, who wrote a 2013 blog which was loosely based on Olive Oil research done by UC Davis in 2011. To this day, she has never revealed the sources of which brands are fraudulent (she does cite an ABC news article, but that fails to point out specific brands). It makes me question what she wrote. It's simply one person's opinion.

Like Abraham Lincoln said, "don't believe everything you read on the internet". If I'm wrong and you are citing that info from a different source, please post and I'll retract everything I just wrote. :)

The reality is that folks are going to have to do better due diligence to determine which brands are best and that is tough since there is so much slop written on the internet adding confusion. Assuming people have genuine faith in the USDA certification process, I'd stick with brands that are labeled "USDA organic" first. Then, try to gauge the purity, origin, etc of the olive oil.

No. I don't know who Mary Vance is. This is info from an expose done on a Canadian program called "Marketplace". They test product(s) and services on a regular basis. No need to retract what you wrote. As you stated, people must do their own due diligence. Just trying to save people a few bucks from purchasing some of that rancid crap trying to be passed off as EVOO.

ETA: sorry hubby corrected me. Expose done on "Q", not "Marketplace".

I get my olive oil from a friend in Crete, so it is the good stuff. It is basically the only fat we use in the house. If it helps against the stupid cancer, all the better.

I wish my cancer knew to die when I was eating all that vegetarian, olive oil filled food. Sigh.

I won't quit eating olive oil because it didn't work for me because it is still yummy!
