I am curious to know how many of you were on HRT at time of diagnosis.

I was put on HRT at the age of 39 (1998) for premature ovarian failure. I have been on it 17 years and was just diagnosed. I just turned 56.

I never received annual counseling regarding latest stats/data etc. from my gyn.. She would repeatedly say "I'm ok with you being on this until your 60".

Dr. Google says your risk increases the longer you take it?

Feedback appreciated!

I was diagnosed at age 63 and had been on HRT 19 years. Of course I had heard about the risk of BC but always thought the benefits outweighed the risks. Wish I had tried some alternative natural treatments instead. Ah, hindsight!

I, too, was diagnosed at age 63, and had been on HRT for 20 years following a hysterectomy. In those days, HRT was thought to be beneficial for your heart and protective for osteoporosis. My gyn was ready to renew my script the month before I was diagnosed! I had already been weaning myself off of it due to concerns by my primary doctor. But, alas, it was too late.

My sister was on hrt before her diagnosis. Our mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer but my sister received no information from her gyn. regarding increased risk of breast cancer. In fact the Dr. told her she could stay on it the rest of her life as far as the she was concerned. When diagnosed, her tumor was 4.5 cm. I guess we'll never know if the hrt caused the cancer or if it caused it to grow faster... since I was also diagnosed and had never been on hrt. My gyn (unlike her Dr.) had warned me to never use any type of hrt and to even be careful with any over the counter products, foods with soy, etc.

I was on HRT for a few years—less than 5—when the big study came out in the news about the risks. I took myself off of it, but my gyn nurse practitioner at the time thought there was no reason for me to stop taking it and basically almost tried to talk me out of getting off the stuff. That was in my mid 50s, and I was 64 (now) at the time of DCIS dx. I don't know the latency period of HRT. But I have another little wrinkle in my medical history: as a young adolescent (maybe age 11-12), I was prescribed (by my pediatrician) large doses of estradiol (probably actually DES) for the purpose of limiting my adult height. It was kind of a thing at the time, because being a tall girl (I'm 5'9") was considered a severe social handicap back in those days. A little fact that I'd not really thought about for years until after my out-of-the-blue diagnosis with DCIS (no family history of BC). This is the same DES that has been linked to cancers in the daughters of women who were given it during pregnancy, and now also to breast cancers in women who took it, as well as a variety of reproductive problems. I have to wonder about the combination of that early, premature exposure to estrogen, along with a few years when I was also prescribed birth control bills in my late teens/early 20s, and then the HRT in my 50s, and then finally my pre-invasive breast cancer dx at 64.

On the other hand, my mother was prescribed HRT in much higher doses back in her day—at the time it was thought that HRT was actually beneficial to women's health in all kinds of ways—and took it for many, many years. She is now 93 and has never had breast cancer, or any cancer other than a few minor skin cancers.

Let me add my 2 cents worth about HRT. My mother was on it for years. She was DX with BC at 68. Her dr immediately took her off Premarin- the HRT drug she was taking at the time. When I miscarried my 3rd child at 40 I was thrown into menopause so I asked my OB-GYN dr about taking HRT. He knew my history but was still ambivalent about it. I took it for years and then stopped. The SEs were brutal for me. My sister never took them. We both got BC but it was probably because of my mother had it and not HRT.

I still think there is a link between BC and HRT but to each her own.

I was on HRT for over 20 years. Am post menopausal now. Five years ago early stage uterine cancer Hysterectomy got it all -- and now IDC early stage. Waiting for MRI to be done tomorrow. It is mind boggling to see what everyone is putting into their bodies which can harm them and now I am convinced that this is one of those things.

I had a hysterectomy when I was 34 right after my second son. My OB-GYN put me on HRT due to my young age at time of hysterectomy. He said I needed it so I took it for eight years. Only reason I stopped taking the HRT was my hormone levels got so high that I developed hyperthyroidism and the only way to fix it was to go off HRT and I never went back on it. So of course there is no way to know for sure but I do think it may have contributed in a strong way. My mom and both of my sisters have not had BC only me.

Millions have benefited from HRT and will never get BC. I believe that I got BC because I have boobs.

A random mutation of stem cell division which can have contributing factors of age, environment, genetics, etc. will be studied for years more.

I would be doing my doctor a disservice if I tried to blame him for prescribing the HRT that helped me through some very physically challenging times.

Per my oncologist, HRT consisting of estrogen alone, seems ok. It's the combined HRT (estrogen and progestin) that's the "villian".

We are perfectly capable of making responsible decisions...if we are well-informed.

Yes, HRT gave me many great years.  BUT if I knew then what I know now, I would have chosen differently.  It wasn't worth it to me.

I went on Premarin for about a year. Got a breast cyst. It was painful, was drained and tested. Benign. Went back on Premarin in Dec 2014. Several weeks later painful lump to right of where you think breast tissue end, under armpit. Everyone including Doc said "probably nothing, BC not painful usually". Sent for mammogram then ultrasound then biopsy. Cancer in the Axillary Tail of Spence. Breast tissue extends up towards armpit. Now awaiting surgery date and all the rest of treatment. Was is the Premarin? Whoknows?

my mom took premarin for menopausal symptoms and developed ILC. Her doctor said "tell your 3 daughters never to take any HRT because of your having had breast cancer". So when I had large ruptured ovarian cysts and ended up with immediate surgical menopause, I was unable to take any HRT at all, due to mom's history of bc and my high risk due to LCIS.

Took birth control pills my whole life, from age 17 to around age 40.

I had HUGE fibroids, constant pain, and periods that lasted three weeks out of four. I wore tampons AND pads.

At 48, I started peri-menopause. The side effects were horrible. I had hot flashes every 20 minutes, and night sweats every 45 minutes. Finally, I lost my short-term memory.

Because my mom had BC, I was trying to avoid HRT, but my quality of life suffered so much, I decided to go on it. The minute I did, I got my "normal" life back. I stayed on HRT for ten years.

I was on a combination pill at first, then after my hysterectomy, went on estrogen only, til the age of 58.

I was dx'd with BC at age 60.

Cause and effect? Maybe. Crap shoot? Probably. Like SweetHope said, I think I got BC because I had boobs.

This is taken from this website, breastcancer.org., under Breast Cancer Risk Factors.

Combination HRT increases breast cancer risk by about 75%, even when used for only a short time. Combination HRT also increases the likelihood that the cancer may be found at a more advanced stage, as well as increasing the risk that a woman diagnosed with breast cancer will die from the disease. Breast cancer risk increases the most during the first 2 to 3 years of taking combination HRT. Higher-dose combination HRT increases breast cancer risk more than lower-dose combination HRT. Breast cancer risk goes back down to average about 2 years after you stop taking combination HRT.

Estrogen-only HRT increases the risk of breast cancer, but only when used for more than 10 years. Estrogen-only HRT also can increase the risk of ovarian cancer.

My mom took Premarin for probably 30 years before they recommended stopping it. So far the only person in our family who ever got BC was me.

I was just talking to someone the other day who had both Hodgekins and nonHodgekins lymphoma (sorry for slaughtering the name). She had stem cell therapy which sent her into menopause at 40. She is taking HRT. I don't know. I don't know if I could risk that given her background. I don't know if the other stuff makes any difference but having been through all of that, it would be hard to make a decision. I am still on the fence about Tamoxifen.

I had taken HRT for 20 years before my dx. Don't regret it at all as I had a dreadful menopausal and felt I could not continue working as I was. Three weeks into HRT back to feeling great. I tried coming off it but was back where I started so continued. Going cold turkey plus Femara has been no joke but no alternative this time!

I was on BHRT for 3 years--2 years progesterone only (Progon B) and then added a bit of compounded estrogen cream (estradiol/estriol). I had horrible PMDD that started at age 40, and BHRT really "cured" me. After we added in estrogen, I started having tons of problems with cystic changes. That should have been a warning sign. My NP said it could not possibly be the estrogen, that it must be the progesterone. Then why was my breast tissue stable before we added it in--dense, but stable? I stopped it for a while and then tried very low dose--then "the lump" appeared. I stupidly thought it was another cyst, but in the back of my mind, it was nagging at me. Months later, finally diagnosed. TG it was a slow grower.

Want to add that my maternal grandmother has been on Premarin since age 50 (now 91) and still takes a low dose, and she has never had any form of cancer. Go figure. My mom (her daughter) died at age 34 of leiomayosarcoma but she had a lot of immune problems from an early age.

I was also on HRT for 15 years prior to my diagnosis.  I had a hysterectomy in my mid 30's.  I don't know if the HRT had anything to do with the cancer or not ... I just know it really sucked when I went cold turkey off the medication at age 51.

    hugs,

Bren...as I said in my original post, I had taken combination HRT for 17 years. Each time I tried to go off it I had this AWFUL wired feeling with headaches. It was truly intolerable. I could handle the hot flashes no problem. Then when I was diagnosed with BC, I stopped cold turkey BUT at the same time I was given xanax for the cancer anxiety and viola...no HRT withdrawal symptoms. Sheesh. Wish I knew that years ago!

My mom was 12 years on Prempro and premarin from the time she was 50 til 62.  At 58 she got ADH but no one told her to get off HRT.  At 66 she got full blown estrogen positive bc.  She passed of bc at 73.   I blame HRT.  Sometimes I think it's because I have to blame something or somebody.  Other times I really believe you just can't screw with Mother Nature.  What really irks me is that the drs. always told her HRT would protect her from arthritis (which her mom had in a debilitating form).  When my mom was first dxed with bc her oncologist told me "Your mom has the bones of a 30 year old!"  to which I replied "But my mom has cancer."  ((sigh))

Mkjkd 60...I'm sorry about your mom. I don't want my children feeling what you've gone through. :(

Because I had menopause so young (39) they insisted on combination HRT to prevent osteoporosis. When I was dx with BC my dexascan showed osteopenia so looks like it didn't protect THAT much.

Regardless, I would have dealt with any early menopause side effects/risks instead of cancer!

My mom had early menopause at 42. She took nothing. Lived a long healthy life (80). No bone, heart issues, nada. I agree with you about Mother Nature.

mkkjd60, I am so sorry about your mom. I wish someone had warned me about dense breasts and HRT and the risk. Problem is with this disease--hindsight doesn't give a chance for a "do-over"! :-(

I was on Prempro for approx 15 years (early menopause) prior to my bc dx. But bc also runs in my family, so as much as I believe hormones fueled my bc, I'm not sure they are totally to blame. OTOH, I am disgusted that my PCP kept me on them as long as she did -- always reassuring me when I questioned her (especially after my sister was dx'd with bc) that they were doing me more good than harm -- which I now believe was total drug company BS. Her contention was that since I'd gotten on them so early and stayed on them without a break, I didn't fit the profile of women on them (Nurses' Health Study) who developed bc. Grrrrrrrrr....... Deanna--oh, that is so upsetting! Esp. since your doctor knew about your sister. My doctor never even asked me about having dense breasts, so I was never told of the risk. Plus, she also claimed that bioidentical hormones are protective... uh, didn't protect me. I agree... grrrrrrrrrr.

I have an autoimmune disease and take prednisone daily for 7 years. The drug takes all the goodness out of your bones. I have taken Cenestin HRT for 18 years. I started after my hysterectomy. I kept my ovaries but they stopped working. I had no problems on the HRT. In 2012 I had DCIS. They told me to stop HRT. I tried and ended up in the hospital several times. So I kept taking it. Last week I was told the company stopped making the drug. No warning. So my gyno offered me a viville dot patch for 6 mos as we try to get me off HRT finally. Reacted to the adhesive and had to stop cold turkey. I am a mess.

Did the HRT cause the DCIS? Maybe but I could not get off of it. Going to ask for some Xanax or something else.

Bunkie - the hrt did not cause your cancer but it was a yummy food source for it.

I had a horrible time getting off hrt. I use Xanax for sleep issues. The other side effects I had going off hrt resolved in about 2 months.

Thanks Jilly59 - Feels like I am going crazy. My Dr is going to call in some valium next week after I see her. I seem to sleep ok for about the first 5 hours then I am awake.

I do not have a family history because I am adopted. So no way to know.

I am not on HRT and never have been but I have been taking Xanax to sleep due to stress. I am trying not to take it more than 2 weeks at a time. So I am looking for other things to help me sleep. I tried this sleep meditation last night and it did seem to help a bit. I did wake up a few times but I was able to go back to sleep every time.

You need to practice it a few times. I think they key to this stuff if the deep breathing and focusing your mind on relaxing your body so you aren't thinking about your day and all that goes in it.
