MRI: "Clumped non mass enhancement"

I had a mammogram which showed a very small area of microcalcifications. Because of this they, decided to do an MRI (I already had an ultrasound that should nothing). The MRI came back with a region of clumped non mass enhancement measuring 3 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm. BIRAD 4. They recommended a stereotactic biopsy with mammogram imaging. When they tried it, they couldn't find the spot on the mammogram and had to cancel the biopsy. They want me to do an MRI assisted biopsy now.

Can anyone shed some light on what the MRI results might mean while I'm waiting? I've done some research and it sounds like it might be DCIS, but I don't know. I looked at the MRI image, but can't really tell anything.

    PrairieGirl63-

We wanted to welcome you to our community here at BCO. We're sorry for what brings you here, but we're very glad you've found us!

A BIRAD score of 4 suggests that the area of concern is abnormal or suspicious, but isn't itself indicative of malignancy. Typically scores of 4 or higher will require a biopsy, since MRI imaging can only tell the doctor if there is a mass or area of concern. It could very well be benign, or there could be another explanation besides cancer. The only definitive diagnostic test is a biopsy. You can read more about it here: http://www.breastcancer.org/symptoms/testing/types/mammograms/results.

Please keep us posted on when you have your biopsy, and your results. We know the waiting is hard, you'll be in our thoughts!
