Oh Lacey - I wish I was closer to help you out. Men truly are the worst patients. I made that comment to DH yesterday and he was shocked (shocked I tell you!) and was all "who, me???" They're not even aware of it. And where are all the young kids wanting to make a few bucks with a shovel these days? They could be making a fortune right now.

It's 9 degrees here today, -8 tonight. They're calling for more snow here this week too so this crap isn't going away any time soon. The only good thing about February, imho, is that it's short.

PT just left....we all went through the shower entry exit drill and I think I will be better mentally for not having that odd health aide man in our house. Lots of gentle PT exercises will keep Dh busy, now, seo I can get to other things. I'm sure there will be plenty of other things to do like today soent two hours chipping away the frozen waterfalls that formed in two of our upstairs windows. Ag least it isndone, and I left towels and sponges in the frames, tomhopefully alleviate some of the flooding when the temp rises. Sorry for all the typos again!!!!

I anticipate using lobster pots if needed. Ds2 did that yesterday for his ceiling leaks. Unpleasant as your landlord is Bedo, he is right. Most people I know are busy catching water in very large pots. This is truly an unprecedented time of weather and building crisis! Good idea about the kiddie swimming pool!

The flAkes have just started again. Hope it stays cold.

Just had a spoonful of peanut butter (my throat said 'ouch' but my body loved the protein) for the first food I've had today....stupid....and never got to the chicken cooking for dinner. Will check to see if it is thawed enough and maybe put it in oven....or maybe pizza. DH will for sure NOT forget about dinner like I might. LOL! It may be easier to put chicken in iven than to drive to the pizza place. I am appreciating all those things that DH typically does. And one of things that isntirong isnthat I get to do "creative" AND "maintenance" now whereas we usually have those roles split! Nance, there are NOO kids looking to shovel...which totally amazes me. My kids always did it in our neighborhood. Times have changed. At this point I have an intense relationship with three different shovels, and I have come to love their versatility!

Spoiler alert Eric......It does amaze me how the personalities of men can change when they are dependent due to illness. My DH is what everyone thinks of as a "mench".....a very sweet, non-critical type guy. But it is probably his anxiety about not being in control that leaves him micromanaging his compulsively competent wife. We had "the talk" about that last evening, after I got some aggression out shoveling, and he is trying really hard to be more appreciative of how I am working hard for him and giving up just about everything else that I enjoy to be at his service. Fortunately, he will not be this dependent for too long. We will get through it! Interestingly, he manages to complete all the phone meetings that he had on his schedule for this week, so in some ways, his life has not changed....but I'm sure he does not feel that way....

    Off to check the chicken......

Goodness, I feel so bad for you, Lacey.  Just called dh to the computer to see your pictures.  Men are definitely NOT good patients.  Hope you don't get sick.  Cannot believe the story about the PT man.  Disgusting.

And Bedo with a leaking roof and expected to put a bucket under it.  And Nance with temperatures in the single digits.

I went out and played golf this morning at 9 am, all bundled up, with temp. in the 40's but sunshiny.  The forecast promised it wouldn't be windy and that turned out to  be a big lie.  There were 12 of us stupid women and none of us could quit because it takes 12 for the event to count as an event.  The sheep farmer from IN called and was amazed to learn I was out on the golf course.  He sounded really nice and said the lamb is wrapped in butcher paper, not shrink wrapped in plastic.  So I plan to place an order of at least $75 and get the free shipping.  I'll let you know how this turns out, Nance.  He also said that he has been getting more orders from people in the south, several from Louisiana.  The name of the farm is Daylight Farm in case you want to check it out.

Dinner will be leftover red beans and rice and probably another coleslaw.  The one last night was really good.  I had half a turkey burger and sweet potato fries for lunch.

Forgot to say that Minus's idea about poaching the fish is a good one.  Keeps it from spoiling and can be eaten in a salad later if not eaten immediately after cooking.

Lacey, Oh do I feel for you! Have I mentioned that you need to call in your 30 years of favors from your network? He has friends too. Can't they be "scheduled" to come for a few hours to hang with him to give you a break? Can you create a food schedule, and that is when you will bring him food, and set up a cooler with drinks next to his chair so he can find his own drinks? [Isn't that a funny idea. A cooler in this weather inside when our houses are groaning from ice drams?]

I went out today and it is a mess out there! We now have four places that water is dripping into the house. Mr 02143 did remove ice from the basement access roof today [only one story] and that leak seems to have slowed. Now the flat room off the second floor is acting up. And the third floor roof is a total nightmare. Nothing we can do about those two dams though. Way too high.

Mr 02143 did get to Costco today and brought home a lovely tuna steak. Though the grill is unshoveled, I cooked this inside. 2 minutes per side on a hot grill pan. Served with roasted mini potatoes and roasted green beans. Nice change from all this lamb we have been eating. Made some pumpernickel bread yesterday and it is like a brick. Truly traditional. If you like pumpernickel, this bread is fabulous! I need some smoked fish to have a wonderful Finish sandwich.

Love poached fish, and it is a great way to use previously frozen fish. And the liquid that you poach the fish in become your fish fumée! [which is just a fancy word for fish stock.] Olive oil poached fish is also very interesting though I have only made this a few times. The cost of the olive oil seems too high.

The leftover tuna will turn into a Niçoise Salad.

Did poach the fish and made fume.

Grumpy today. "Everyone" bothered me from the minute I got up until I got home from practice at 9:30pm.. Landlord no help with roof leaking,, secretaries at new job even though I kept telling them it was "MY DAY OFF and no I don't have a copy machine and scanner at home to send you in sh%T that I already gave you last week" Told the only person that I have ever been interested in on Match that I didn't think he was real and couldn't correspond with him and he emailed me with a picture of his passport and said he felt disrespected. I am an idiot. Violin sounds like a trumpet. I stink even for an amateur. I was told to put a potato in the case. The job I wanted hired someone else and I have this dumb job. I ordered pjs for my daughter online and they didn't come (until today after I ordered a second pair and "cancelled" the first today). Cat peeing in the bathtub so I put tin foil in there and now I really look like I'm psycho. Yelled at the pharmacist who charged me $90 for a prescription that insurance Always covers, so I gave it to him because I needed it.

Cottage cheese with chives for dinner. And a ton of ginger ale. I kind of calms me down.

    Grumpy bear.

And I'm an idiot for complaining about nothing.

And I used a lot of bad language today. Very bad language.

Which must look kind of shocking coming out of the mouth of a middle aged upright looking woman.

Thankfully the cats don't understand English, at least I don't think they do.

Okay.... my kitchen ganglette.... what should I make for Lacey? you all know what she eats. You know what I make. Where is the overlap? And where is the overlap that can be re-heated later? [And, the kale divide looms large!]

What I have come up with is... make some chicken stock with a whole chicken. This will then be turned into Pasta e Fagioli and Chicken Vegetable Soup [She can add kale to both.]. I would deliver with the pasta separate so it doesn't soak up all the juices. The chicken then could be turned into chicken salad, delivered with some bread to make a sandwich. I would then pack up some prepared veggies that she could top the sandwich, or add to the mix. We all like different things in chicken salad. If there is decent salmon at the market, salmon burger ready to cook with pita and tartar sauce.

The shortcoming in my life is, I don't have infinite time, but I really want to help Lacey out. Thoughts?

Susan, You are so lovely and kind...and so talented as a culinary creator, I'll be sorry I am saying the following, but ....I do not want you going to all that trouble! At this point everyone here is stressed to the max with our "snowpocalypse" issues and I made a plan for tomorrow's and Friday's dinner...simple but DH would be happy with anything I cook at this point :) Please take care of yourself, my dear...you have plenty going on, too.

I did cook up the chicken tonight....baked some with garlic and basil...and "boiled" (?) up some to make soup broth, and will make chicken soup with orzo tomorrow...maybe a Greek kind with lemon. Also, gotmaround to making my smoothies formthe next few days. So I feel more organized than I was eight hours ago!

Meanwhile, there is a helper on the horizon for tomorrow. Yay! A friend of DH's is coming over in the morning to take our trash and recycling to the dump (you must all think it crazy that our town still has people do their own trash and recycling drop off, but we do! Anyway, I get very skeevy about trash smells and this particular friend was very happy to oblidge when DH called him at my suggestion. He is also bringing some of those homemade calcium chloride stuffed stockings that people are putting on their roofs to make a channel for water. Am dying to try that on some of our ice dammed roofs. If they seem to work, I will make us some more, and we will have a "sausage "studded roof system! ;)

I am staying downstairs for a bit, so that I can remove the elevation pillow DH is sleeping with right now...but should be moved soon. His leg is so very swollen. It is apparently a normal reaction after his surgery, but he is alarmed at the size of his leg, so we're doing all the things the PT suggested today to get the swelling to subside. It Is kind of creepy. Of course so many women put up with dealing with lymphedema issues after surgery, but a man's swollen leg is felt to be a major crisis! Fortunately the PT just returned from a course on lymph drainage so she had great ideas for self massage and other ideas. Oh, Carole, it was the home health aide who was "sloppy". The PT is lovely. And we meet the regular nurse tomorrow....Monday we had a sub since it was a holiday. I was surprised we saw anyone on a holiday, but VNA is pretty responsive.

OK, I am going to straighten out that leg and head to bed. Tomorrow is another day....think I will have an outing...to the post office! I Have had a package ready to mail to a friend since last Tuesday...day of the ladder fall. :/ Needless to say, it is still by my desk.....I need to discipline myself to take care of things other than DH during this period, even though it should not be too long.

Thanks for all of your support and advice, friends! It is so meaningful to me....:)

lacey- hugs. Most men are bad at being sick..

Carol lovely pics. Jealous of you and not just for the weather.

Bedo, leaks are no fun and I read about the mayor telling people mot to jump out of he windows for fun. I guess you still could jump if it was an emergency! LOL

Eric neither are sick puppies....get out the resolve.

I am truly sorry for all you dealing with the horrible weather! So much snow. The year before last was our year of too much snow and I remember how bad it was.

Susan you are just a real nice person!

Auntie Nance you're almost as cold as us up here. It was -3 earlier. I don't want to see what it is in the early am. Yuck.

Mommy of 2, I love sloppy joes. I use that leftover to make Shepard s pie the next day (yes, I know it's cottage pie if it's not lamb but most people don't know that :)

    Minus stay warm.

Special, I'm glad you to to be with your DD

Red, hoping you are healing and resting well.

Raisin toast with cream cheese sandwich. Hey, I had a meeting! LOL

Going to be sitting for DGD on Friday. Will spend Thursday night there as t is supposed to snow here. My DD2 will be going to work that day so I'll be alone to see if I remember how to make it through a alone it a wee one.

To everyone, much love, stay warm and healthy.

Moon, you impressed me with all those responses!  I should be the jealous one.  No GD and no prospects ever.  My choice since I passed on having children.

Lacey, you sound in control now.

    Bedo, what a grump!

I'm off to my PCP for a 9 am apptment.  I'm hoping that's her first.  I like her a lot but it's nothing unusual to sit in the waiting room for 2 hours.  She doesn't keep to her apptment schedule.  I'm interested in getting her thoughts on my foot ailment.  Last year she told me to be vigilant about foot problems because of my pre-diabetic status.

I made the Red Lentil Soup last night.  My potato was more smallish than medium and I followed some of your changes, Susan.  Tomato paste with the veggies and 1/2 tsp cumin with them.  Simmered on the stove top.  Used cayenne pepper instead of Aleppo and urfa, which I don't have.  And extra cumin.  Butter at the end.  No roux.  Squeezed a couple of lemon wedges into the pot and added some dry mint from the bouquet hanging in the kitchen.   Very pretty soup and I like the taste but don't love it.  For me it needs a creamy component, maybe a dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt.  I will try that when I warm up a bowl.  Next time I will cut back on the cumin.  Use just the amt. in the recipe.  Maybe chopped fresh cilantro would be good?  Definitely an easy soup to make, and, as I said, very pretty.

Just wondering, do red lentils have a different taste?

    Dinner tonight an unknown.

    Carole,

Too bad that you didn't enjoy the soup.... seems to me there are several possible reasons: 1. We have different lentils or 2. We have different tastes! I do add chopped parsley which I add before the whirring with the immersion blender. I don't think a dollop of yogurt would be out of place, but I find that the potato is enough "cream." I am voting for no. 2.

Susan, I did enjoy the soup and will finish the leftovers. No doubt our tastes do differ. Not a bad thing. I could never consume as much kale as Lacey does!

Which reminds me to ask if anyone else has frozen kale? I ran out of refrigerator space recently and stuck a big bag of kale in the freezer.

Took out some chicken breasts this morning. Probably will cook them with preserved lemon and olives. Veggies on hand are butternut squash and ?? Little cabbages.

    Lacey - hooray for reinforcements!

Carole - I think the red lentils taste different. Less "earthy", for lack of a better word. I like that about them.

Monica - fun with DGD! Bet it's like riding a bike lol!

Happy Chinese New Year! To celebrate we're having Orange Chicken for DH and Kung Pao chicken for me. And not from carryout (although that would be far easier.) But it's supposed to be single digit again tonight, so I doubt that I'll want to venture out even to pickup carryout. More snow for us tomorrow so I rescheduled my MO appointment, since I have to drive 55 miles and my car is not front or 4 wheel drive. Then rain AND snow on Saturday. That ought to be fun. If I lived in Boston, I would probably jump out of a window too. And not into a snowbank. I don't do confinement well.

Red, that is just too much. Hope you are feeling better and can get the dad situation resolved. (((Hugs)))

Carole, I have accidently frozen kale in my refrigerator when it was overcrowded. If you use it before too long, I'll bet it's ok. Not in a salad of course ;-)

I DESPISE waiting for doctors, even the ones I like. What's the use of an appointment if they're going to keep you waiting for hours. I read recently that some people were sending their doctors bills for their wait - like $10 an hour or something (seems pretty cheap to me). And some paid it! I try to get the first appointment of the day but as you know, Carole that doesn't always work.

Joyce, hope you are taking care of yourself too.

    Lacey, I think you're awesome!

The birds have gone through 50 pounds of bird seed this week, with all the snow, so it's off to the feed store for bird supplies. It will be good to get out of the house even if it is 9 degrees. But the sun is shining and for a change, no wind!

We've had non exciting meals here. Spaghetti one night and chili another. Tonight is chicken breasts some way or other. I went to the local spice store in the hospital district yesterday. I bought a new fish/chicken seasoning ground spices #1 is rosemary, with pepper black/white, salt, mustard flour, garlic, oregano. Says rub with olive oil then rub in spice 4-6 hours. Hah chicken is frozen solid. Maybe I'll use it to make custom oven fry. Also bought another chile spice, a white chile blend and some spinach flakes. Also they have cheap screw top plastic spice bottles, the short kind. Will have to try out some this weekend because next week I'm back in the same area so I can get more if I like them.

Lacey - you sound like grace under fire. My heart (typed heat hah) goes out to you. Bad enough with the snow but with cooped up laid up DH and aides peeing on you floor. Geesh. Hope you get some relief with DH's ?coworker coming by. Gosh I would be sticking with toast and canned soup. I'd get another food delivery done if you could. Only thing we get out here is pizza Mr. Jim's.

Speaking of pizza I have to step it up a bit. I bought some 00 flour at Cent. Mkt. Only 2.2#. "Anna" brand $3.99 I think. Forget the other one they had. Now to find an easy on the hands dough. I don't have anything to knead with. Doubt the old Sunbeam in closet works though somewhere I do have a food proc. I haven't used in years either.

Red I'm not sure what large a metro area you are in. In the DFW area we have the "Area Agency on Aging". Another member has used the same kind of thing to look for services for her parents in her area. A quick google would give you senior services. Now this might be things you've already looked at but might not hurt to look again. I know your time on computer is probably limited/frustrating no doubt. Wish there was something I could do other than lend moral support and pray for you and your dad. I hope you yourself are getting some help at home.

I also have red lentils. Now DH tolerates beans, loves rice. He's never had lentils. I'll have to find the recipes you (plural) have sent and make 1/2 recipe. We might be in for a bit of winter next week - Monday and maybe later in the week. Might be a good thing to have then. For sure Mon will be cold. Oh Nancy sounds like the precursor to our stuff. I do confinement OK out here not a lot to do and this past summer spent many days at home. Frustrating though when stuff needs to get done.

I have a big Yay. Went yesterday for mammo and radiologist says all is fine. BS appt next week thank goodness on Wed when it's warmer. I was late, my usual route closed d/t construction. I was one of the last ones in in the morning and it went zip/zip and I was outta there.

Yes 1st appt of day or 1st back from lunch. With my eye doc never, never works.

Monica - yay for time with DGD. Even after 39 years mine is a butt head. Times I think I'm invisible. Hope when weather breaks up there you can get out more and make more of a life for yourself. Wish money wasn't such a concern for you. And yes I can be a butt head, certainly admit that. What happens when he no longer has bad weather for an excuse?

Bedo - Have you considered tarps, cheap baby diapers with your pots? Or have you located a kiddy pool?

Love your pics Carole and Nancy. Did not love your pics Lacey. Sending wishes of tropical paradise to you, Bedo, Susan, Nancy and Red

Very nice, Luv! So happy for you!

Monica, I agree with Nance on the bicycle theory! And what fun you will have getting to know that little sweet one by yourself!

Bedo, here you go.....an article about our MA Gov's house and all its leaks! Oops!! I copied it from boston.com, but it didn't paste to here. Check out boston.com for it. Very few people do NOT have leaks now. :/

Red, I do hope some plans can be put in place for your dad that do. Ot impact your relationship terribly. You are so devoted to him....but he does sound like he needs closer care, and you really need to pay attention to your recovery. (((Hugs)))

Joyce, I'm so sorry, yet it is totally understandable that being the caretaker for your parents took such a toll on you. I really do hope that you can nurture yourself and regain your health soon. Let's plan a lunch out when you return to the Northland. And if she's not busy tooling around Europa, Susan can join us!!

Today it started out sunny, so after our friend helped with some of the trash, I donned my coat and gloves, grabbed my shovels, and started to tackle last night's "droppings" ...3-4 inches worth here. After the first five minutes outside, it started to SNOW again!! Actually pretty....don't kill me!!! So I just continued until the whole property was done, and given our current white stuff, we'll have another coating...but hopefully not shovel worthy.

For some reason I am not minding the shoveling....maybe the fresh air feels good! I even made it over to our neighbor's (the guy who helped me clear our driveway after the last 18 inches) drive since they are now away skiing, the town plow deposited more junk/slop piles at the end of all of our driveways, and it is going to freeze hard tonight. That stuff was wet and heavy....and my shoulders are still fine. :) I think when I can get out to shovel, there is a compulsive satisfaction to it. ;) Of course the exercise is also critical! I may have to enter an upper body fitness contest after this!!

Nance, I had just mentioned to DH, how awful this snow must be to people who are claustrophobic, since it is starting to feel like it is smothering one's house. So not surprising you feel antsy. Don't make any trips to New England for a while!

Another serendipity! My next door neighbor (Timpano cohort) just called to check on us and is bringing dinner over. She just returned from FL, is a great cook, and does not have far to travel. Good thing, the visibility just reduced drastically with snow squalls!

So while DH is on the phone with a friend, I think I'll try to hang the calcium chloride "sausages" from the upstairs over the lower roofs. Who would have thought to be doing this!?! Hope it helps when the temp rises and the rain starts. Oy!

Waaaay to long of a post again. Hello to all I missed....brain function definitely compromised! :/

I have 4 books from the Library, among them, one, A brief history of Time and the other "Snow-blind" which is a mystery about people who "disappear" under very mysterious circumstances in a blizzard. "Great choice! That was smart" A friend of mine said.

Luv, great news on the mammo.  So happy for you.  ThumbsUp  Give us a report on the new spices when you test them out.

Lacey, I am SUPER impressed with your shoveling prowess.  You're going to be even more physically fit, going into spring.  Glad your neighbor is bringing you and dh dinner.

I did not exit my dr.'s office until 11 am.  I sat in the exam room almost an hour.  She breezed in about 10 am.  It probably took no more than 15 min. to cover my health issues and for me to ask a few questions.  We spent about an hour together in the exam room, talking about all sorts of things.  I felt bad as I passed through the waiting room because it was full of patients.  Some of them were probably there to see the NP or another professional on the staff  but I'm sure some were waiting to see Dr. Levi.  I enjoy our chats but she really should stick to business.

Now the order for blood work is in the computer.

She had no answer when I asked her what she thought my target heart rate should be when I'm doing cardio in the gym.  So I'll do some research, maybe talk to a PT person.  She doesn't think my foot problem could be diabetic neuropathy since I'm pre-diabetic, not diabetic.  I have the name of another podiatrist that she recommended.

DH voted for chicken marsala so that's what we're having for dinner.  The recipe is off the Food Network compliments of Emeril.  I've cooked it lots of times.  It's simple and tasty.  I used baby bella mushrooms.  I'll probably make a salad with romaine, colored bell pepper and avocado.
