I was just told I had breast cancer two days ago and understandably am in shock I had a biopsy because they saw something in mammo and I was told by my gyno that I could wait 6 months if I wanted because it was so small there was a 98 percent chance that it was a cyst. Turns out there was a cyst but hidden behind it they found something else.

I was told its invasive, no larger than 1 cm , but there might be some cells in breast ducts - in situ -

I live on Long Island. I managed to get an appointment Tuesday with a Dr. at Sloan Kettering - Long Island Branch and definitely plan on a second opinion

What questions do I need to ask - -

Is there anyone here on this board that can tell me if it would to my benefit to go to NYC to get my second opinion, and how do I find out who is the best Dr. there.

I am so frightened they will find more than the biopsy showed and that it could have traveled, although the medical imaging Dr. claims that isn't so. I also pray I don't have to have chemo.

I am not feeling strong and am so depressed by this - it is hard for me to function at moment.

I welcome any advice.

It sounds like they caught it VERY early. My best advice is to spend some time reading on this board while you pass the time. I know it is shocking when you first find out. It is positive for estrogen and progesterone? Apparently, those things are good.

Hi florida2015, sorry to see you here, but you will get the best info on the boards. We all have real time info, and you will get a lot of info for the different cases. Are you seeing a BS on Tuesday? Unfortunately I live in Ohio so I do not have any info about Sloan, as I go to the Clinic. But you see that a lot of the women on the boards go there. Did you get a pathology report yet from the biopsy? Visit some of the other boards, and you will see hoe different all of the tumors can be. The Doctor will prepare a plan just for you, and will lay out the treatment needed. But probably the best thing to do is take a deep breath, and try to relax. Take someone with you to the appointment so they can take notes, or record it on your smartphone. It could be a lot of info and you won't be able to process it all at that time.

I wish you well, and I do hope you can relax. It's nothing until it is something. Drop back around and let me know how it goes. We have all been there, so we all get it. Let us know how we can help you!

A second opinion is always wise in my book.  Especially when you do live in close proximity to NYC.

You do have time.  More time than you think you have.  It is so awful during those first days of diagnosis.

You are in the worst part because you are just taken so off guard.  But choice of doctors is key...

and do take someone with you to your appointments and have them write things down for you in answer

to those questions.   It is so easy to forget with the stress that you are under.

Hello Florida! Firstly, take some big deep breaths, this is the worst part. The shock of a Dx with no information and the waiting, is just so hard. We all understand just how you are feeling right now.

I am in Australia, so can't help with your question about where to go.

Do you have someone to go with you to your appointment on Tuesday? It is beneficial to have another set of ears if possible, if not, try recording the consult on your phone. We tend to suffer from info overload, or at least I did and having my Husband there was so helpful.

Try to stay away from Dr Google, there is a lot of out of date and irrelevant information which can scare you. Stick with us here and you will get support and the information. Once you have your appointment and have a n idea of what is going on and what the treatment options are, you'll feel much better. It is entirely up to you whether you get a second opinion, or not. Many do, but lots are happy with the first Doctor they encounter and find they stay there.

There will be others along to share their experiences with you, you'll ever be alone here!

Take it easy and let us know how you're getting on.

Thank you so much. I am going to record as well as have my husband accompany me. And guess you are right about Google, there is so much and it does sound scary when you read so much.
