Tamoxifen-- Which generic are you taking without SE
I am done with mastectomy and chemio and I will be starting starting Tamoxifen next week. I am pretty upset because reading the boards, Nolvadex that is the brand name is not sold anymore in this country and there are instead one million 'sub-brands" (generic) in which the active principle is the same but the inert substances that are used to make the pill are different. The problem is that some of these brands seem to cause a lot of side effects mostly incredible tiredness and joint pain that are not related to the tamoxifen but to the pill formulation. If someone is taking Tamox without experiencing SE can please share the manifacturer? I am 50, very active and I am terrified from starting this drug! Help!

hi backtohealth. It may be too early for me to say but I have been on tamoxifen for 2 1/2 weeks and I don't have any side effects. It is the Teva brand. I am 52 and had no joint issues before tamoxifen and don't as of now either.
Good luck with it.

Hi backtohealth: Great question. I don't know if there is a specific brand that has fewer SEs or if some people just have better luck in general. I have completed 5 weeks on Mylan brand and so far so good. However, I am 67-well past menopause-and I did not have chemo. Don't know if that influences SEs.

Thanks for the reply! I was reading another board and Tamoxifen sounds like an horrible drug! I completed chemio TC w/o any mayor side effect ( no need for neulasta either)

Keep in mind, everyone is different. Hopefully you won't experience SEs and if you do they may be mild. I have been on Tamoxifen now for over 3 1/2 years and have learned to manage SEs depending on the manufacturer. My preferences are:
1) Mylan - little or not joint pain but more hot flashes (I drink a lot of ice water and use cool wraps on my neck)
2) Watson - fewer hot flashes for me but more joint pain (need to take supplements to manage this)
3) Teva - really really bad joint pain, muscle cramps and hot flashes. Thankfully my pharmacists has been really good at obtaining supplies from the other two so I haven't had to take Teva for quite some time. If I had to take this brand for an extended period of time I would have to consider other options.

This is fascinating - I'm so interested to hear more

I've tried Teva, Mylan & Watson. No real difference for me. So, I guess it's the active ingredient
that's causing my issues. I was diagnosed at 52, started Tamox at 53. The joint aches/pains are there & worse than before. But I still work out everyday(run, swim, weights, bike, hike, pilates....) I would just start with one & switch if needed. My problematic SEs are uterine issues, dizziness, pelvic pain & crankiness. If you have SEs on all the brands like I do, you may want to revisit Tamox with your MO. Depending on your tumors, it may not really be that beneficial. If I didn't have positive nodes, I don't think I would continue on it.

I've been on the Teva brand for just over eight weeks now. My hot flashes were a little more intense in the beginning but have mostly gone away. Other than that I feel fine.

My Pharmacy filled with the TEVA brand-- it seems the worse for some but well tolerated by others, I guess I will have to try and see! Coraleliz my ca is >98% Estrogen receptor positive and I had one positive node (oncotype 19) so I do not have a real choice, although in the big schema of things estrogen receptor + is a good thing. Will keep the board posted. Happy Valentines day!

I have been on Watson's Tamoxifen for exactly 11 months, with a 2 week vacation after the first month. (I had some allergy issues, puffy eyes and swollen lips - deicided maybe seasonal?) I have more frequent migraines and more intense reflux than usual. I am pretty sure that my intense but infrequent hot flashes are mostly a SE of Lupron (I was premenopausal.). I exercise daily. Feel good on Tamoxifen but switching to an AI since the SOFT Trial indicated that it is more effective against Lobular. I would give Tamoxifen a chance. After the first 2 months, I have felt really good on it. Everyone reacts differently to these drugs. Wishing you an easy time. Happy Valentine's Day to you as well!

backtohealth, there are plenty of women who take Tamoxifen with few SEs, but if you're having minimal SEs you typically don't post on these boards looking for support. Try not to read too much into the number of women here discussing SEs. Every person is different.
No one will force-feed you Tamoxifen. If you take it for a while and find it unbearable, you have the option of stopping. No sense in getting worked up over something that may not happen. I will be starting Tamoxifen soon and am taking a wait and see approach

Hi, backtohealth. I'm 54, and I've been taking the Teva brand for four months. From what I can tell, the side effects are what I would expect to get from going through menopause: three- or four- a day warm flashes, some trouble falling and staying asleep, and a few joint twinges in spots where I already had them: thumbs and big toes.
There's no need to be terrified of this drug. (It shrank my tumors by 50% in two months, so it was well worth the minor side effects. Our doctors have good reasons for prescribing it!)

In my almost three years on tamoxifen, I've taken Teva, Mylan, and Watson brands with no discernible differences in side effects (mild hot flashes/night sweats and creaky neck). I am 44 years old and premenopausal.

Hello ladies. I just began my 2nd month on Tamoxifen last week. The first month I took Watson, but now they switched it to Mylan at my pharmacy. I am not sleeping well at all. It feels as if I am only sleeping very lightly and I am even awake from 3 am- 5. It is wearing me out! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Hi Annie88,
I spoke to a pharmacist at the mail order pharmacy that our insurance plan forces us to use because I had this same concern. My first two prescriptions were filled locally with Actavis (formerly Watson). Since I've had no SEs, I wanted to be sure that when I switched over to the mail order pharmacy that they would fulfill with the same manufacturer. The pharmacist told me to have my doctor indicate on the prescription that they should fill it specifically with Actavis as the manufacturer. He said as long as that is listed on the prescription, they will fulfill it that way. Otherwise, he said they fulfill with whatever manufacturer that have on hand. Since these are all generics and we're requesting a manufacturer vs. a brand, he said there is no additional charge. Perhaps your pharmacy can do the same thing?

Fralaliso- thank you for the help. I have BCBS and wonder if I too could do this mail order. I am sure my MO would write the RX specifying the Activis brand and it would be nice to have it delivered to my home. Can you give me the info on this mail order? I really appreciate your help! Tonight I am hoping to get some rest, as I have been off for a few days and being cranky hasn't mattered.

Annie88 - Our insurer requires us to use Express Scripts mail order pharmacy after the second fill of any prescription. Here is a ink to their site https://www.express-scripts.com/
Hope you have gotten the rest you were looking for!
