Hi my friends, I have not been here in so long. My hubby and I went to Tennessee for a couple weeks in November. We did the whole Christmas thing and left again 2 days later. We drove out to California to see three of our kids and grand kids then went to Denver for the. Western stock show. We had so much fun. We did some casino hopping all the way home. Hubby even won 1000.00 on a slot machine. I have been trying to focus on living and blocking out the dying part. I feel great other than some age things. Will have the tumor marker test again next month and go from there. My hair is getting really long. It appears I am going to be keeping the kinky curls which I have gotten used to. Did find out that I am allergic to food starch. Really limits what I can eat. I do cheat though. We have so much dam snow here in Maine and it is so cold. It was in the 70's when we left Denver. We should have stayed another month. We were gone for 6 weeks and we really missed our horses. We even missed the 15 yr old son. LoL
I hope everyone is hanging in there and living each good moment to it's fullest. Love you all!

What a wonderful trip, Diana! Good for you! You are coming home to the biggest snow of the season so far though. Mud season should be phenomenal!
-
Dianarose, good for you! Hope you continue to do things to make you happy!
-
nativemaine- they are predicting in feet again for Sundays Blizzard. Where the hell are we going to put it? We already have a tunnel from the house to the car. We came home way to soon.
-
I don't know where this batch is going to go. The good thing is the banks are so high against the house that it's acting as insulation. BUT, getting in and out is a real job!
-
Dianarose - good to hear from you. So glad you are out enjoying life with DH and your family. Sounds like you had a wonderful (and even profitable) trip.
-
Dianarose happy to hear you are doing well and having the time of your life! Keep on keeping on!
Eph I'm out of a job too...Friday the 13th good-bye.
Happy Val Day!!!

Dianarose -
As you were already in Denver for their Stock Show, you should have swung up to the Black Hills for our Stock Show which was Jan 29 - Feb 8. We also have a very 'quaint' gambling town in the area - the infamous Deadwood, SD. (We just voted in Nov to raise the bet limits there. Personally I just play the penny slots so I can make a little last a long time when we go up for the weekend.) It is still the Old West/Gold town it was in look and feel but is very modern in accommodations. The historic hotels have a bit less in the way of having pools, etc. but I like the ambiance of the old buildings(Bullock, Franklin, Gold Dust).Hubby likes Holiday Inn Express as it is a totally new building that was built where a building had burned years ago. Tin Lizzies also has a pool and I think Mineral Palace does too but not sure as have never stayed there. All of these are in 'downtown' Deadwood and you can easily walk anywhere. First Gold and Cadilac Jacks are further and wbile can be walked is a bit further and not a well lighted walk at night. When weather allows, there are 'gun fights' on Main St. Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial are within an hours drive. Crazy Horse Memorial has 2 Volksmarches a year - first weekend in June and late Sept where you can actually walk/hike up to and stand on the arm of the carving.

I'll spare ya'll and not talk about my weather

lol HomeMom - most kind of you!

Hi Frugalgirl,
Glad you found this site. I don't post much but I check in at least 2 or 3 times a week. I'm a two-timer. Diagnosed the 2nd time 9 years after initial diagnosis. Recurrence in same side as original mastectomy. There are a lot more things they can do now than previously. I'm 3 years post the 2nd time. Hang in there - you can make it through this again!
-
As soon as I say that we have a night that it is going to have a wind chill in the 20's! Today was windy and cold, I don't think it got to 60! cold for us!!
I'm going to Daytona this weekend for the 500....not my thing, but the hubster loves it. Going to be about 80 on Sunday. blah, too hot.
-
HomeMom - are you a Disney World fan? My daughters love it...my oldest, who is now 21, wrote on a wishing star in Kindergarten that she wanted to go to Disney World! We've gone a few times and hope to go this year, but now she may have a conflict with when we were planning on going. My husband is a race fan as well. He will definitely be watching this weekend, too! Hope you end up having fun. I went to one race and, it wasn't that fun to me

Eph & Loral - I know many women our age that suddenly find themselves looking for work. It really pisses me off. They can hire the younger women all they want, but we boomers know that we are better workers and we won't be leaving after they train us to start a family.
I've had some friends sign up for the temps (like Kelly or specialized temp agencies for your profession) and they got job offers. The company is really "auditioning" potential employees. My brother prefers to work as a temporary (or consultant, as he calls it...). They almost always offer him a job, but he always says "no thanks" because he makes more money per hour as a temp. He'll take 6-month to 1-year assignments and then he'll take some time off (he's a project manager in IT). I hope something positive comes up soon!
Every 6 months I change this around, but I would MUCH rather be hot than cold! Remind me I said this In August...
-
Disney World is a Magical place! Though it was a total zoo the day it opened, my boyfriend at the time took me. (I'm from Punta Gorda.) Can't begin to remember how many times I've been there since then. Unfortunately haven't been there since '91while the Boys and I were back 'home' while Hubby was deployed to the Persian Gulf for Desert Storm.

HNS - love the "snow hen" - We had hens up until about October last year. They were lots of fun to have around and the fresh eggs were amazing.
Well, at the risk of going "up the creek" again - I finally stopped procrastinating and completed the poop test. 3 different days, two samples each day. I was so glad when it was done and quite eager to get it in the mail and out of the house. So I packaged it all up and sent it off the first chance I got. Later that day I was gathering up all of the instructions etc and noticed that the request form from the doctor was still on my kitchen table! "CRAP!" (censored) My first thought was "I am NOT doing this again" So I called my dr and was told that the lab would call once they received the kit and a copy of the request would be sent. PHEW! Crisis averted.
-
Barsco--what a crisis indeed, so glad it was averted!
-
barsco - that would have been the end of it for me! I hope they never ask me for one of those tests - I would say, please can I just do the colonoscopy?
Hmm... auto-correct changed your name to harsco. What kind of a word is that? Now it's just making up stuff!
-
lol HNS - Google provides info on just about everything.
From Wikipedia - Harsco Corporation is a diversified, worldwide industrial company based in the United States. Harsco operates in 35 countries and employs approximately 12,300 people worldwide. The company provides industrial services and engineered products that serve some of the world’s largest and most essential industries, including steel, railways, and energy. The 2013 revenues totaled $2.8 billion, 60% of which were generated internationally. Harsco is headquartered in Camp Hill, a suburb of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
I can only wish I had that kind of revenue!

Hello middies,
We buried my father-in-law but thoroughly enjoyed his celebration of life memorial. He had been in failing health for some time so his passing was anticipated. DH doing pretty well.
My son went to Asia for a 3 week vacation from medical school in NYU after he finished his Step 1 medical board exam. He said it was the only time for years going forward that he'll get time off like that. He purposely flew from Asia to SF so he could see family. I brought the kayaks up and we went kayaking on Richardson Bay (Sausalito), used our hand held sails with our kayaks and then docked at a restaurant and stuffed our faces with crab and sourdough bread. We had so much fun!
He begins his PhD for the next 3 years at NYU (melanoma brain mets is his focus) then 2 more years of med school (but the "easier" part- more clinical in nature), then he'll apply for residency. Naturally, I'm hoping for California rather than east coast. NY is having lousy weather. It'll be quite the change from his Asia & CA trip. He's 23 and has the world by the tail. We geeked out on nerdy biomed science stuff. I loved it!
-
There is way too much weather talk on this thread. All you newer ladies...that is something to be avoided. Let's keep the bar raised and not have to sink to that lowest common denominator talk. I am sure there are a million other topics out there. Find one!
Scoldy-scold-scold!
Sorry about your father-in-laws passing, D2012. Glad to hear you are at a place of health that you could enjoy the kayaking (and eating!) with your son. Now you will have the opportunity to plan a trip to NYC, right?
-
Elimar, ok mommy
Sooooo, how about that there Varoufakis?
-
Now, my real reason for stopping in, besides the fact that I'm off to see the MO this afternoon, is that I have a story to share...
Spring is the time when they try and corner me for stuff like CTs and my colonoscopy check. Only I don't want that colonoscopy. I had a clear one last year, and the ASCO guidelines say I can go for 5 years now til the next one, but my surgeon (the one I love, you know, the robot's sidekick...) wanted me in for one anyway. I said no to the scheduler. Then, the doctor called me this morning. Yes, called in person. In my world that is freaky because it is never the doc who calls me. He gave me the argument that he was being super cautious (and I know something in him wants to fix the error of his two colleagues and one incompetent GI associate, so he has the best motivations) but in my rebuttal, I asked:
1) Was it not true that c-scope is to look for local recurrence, and that my greater risk was for distant recurrence (as monitored by CT, which I will be getting next month?)
2) Was my surgical site not low enough in my bowel that he could actually check the surgical site with the digital exam? (Eeew, I know.)
He answered yes to both of my queries. Long story short, I won't get the colonoscopy for a couple more years. I share this not to come off like a know-it-all who think she is smarter than her docs. I share because I did my homework and I knew what my risks were. I knew what the follow-up guidelines were. I was making an informed choice and playing an active part in my post-cancer care. I share this because sometimes when you are feeling "do I really need another one of these scan right now?" that the answer might, just might, be that you don't.
"Why this?" and "Why now?" are phrases that are second nature to me. Not everyone bothers to ask these questions, (and you know my opinion is that they should) but our rights are to ask them as we choose to and have them answered.
So, my doc really had not called to guilt me out. Come to think of it, my doc was probably just calling to say "hi" and let me know that if I ever break off my romance with the robot, that he would be available.
-
Ooooh, Momine snuck in a hottie when I was not looking!
And he's our age! And he knows how to balance a check book too! And he can rock the menswear (but maybe a touch of tailoring at the sleeve?)
-
Eli, too funny, because I just had a similar exchange with my surgeon, he "surgeoned" on the other end, but similar anyway.
So, I am 3.5 years out and he looks at my blood work and tells me how happy he is that I am still alive. Then he looks at his notes again and says, "and when I look at the initial risk assessment, I am REALLY happy."
Then we have a nice chat about how one detects mets. He actually teaches an international seminar on follow-up care, and in best professor mode, he explains that the bottom line is that mets are usually found by symptoms, blood work or physical exam. The scans are nice and all, but not really super-useful.
Then he starts writing up the tests for the next visit and wants to put me down for a "full staging work-up," which means shooting me up with radioactive dyes six ways from Sunday and putting me through various fun machines. So I told him no. He looked at me, but I told him, "what did you just finish telling me?" He looked a bit sheepish and promised to stifle his curiosity till the 5-yr mark, inshallah.
-
Eli, yeah, that is our "rockstar" finance minister. He is actually quite insufferable and full of himself, but he struts ok.
He does have a very thick neck, just saying ...
-
He just wanted to see if you had been listening, Mo. Hahaha...Good for you!
-
Sometimes the weather discussions are very refreshing and a reminder that there is normalcy out there somewhere! MO weather is just regular winter cold. 41 degrees right now.
I'm in pain every day from expanders that are empty and moving all over my chest. More perkocet on the way. I wish they would just fill them but I have to wait 4 weeks after surgery...then I only get 60 cc...sigh...now back to the weather.
-
justamy, I will take into account that you are all perc'ed up and, no doubt, reading weather musings are better than sitting there suffering with pain BUT (and it is my big BUT, after all) this thread is a place where those musings are discouraged. Admittedly, many of the threads on BCO welcome weather talk, and some even made it the title of their thread topics. So, I am sure you could find them and weather out to your heart's content. Let's, please, find other common ground to tread on here.
By reining in the co-minglings of regional forecasts, you will have my eternal gratitude.
~~Signed, Pink-Doggy Tyrant
