Anyone from the Raleigh/Durham area in North Carolina?  Looking for recommended Plastic Surgeons particularly ones that aren't just the implants or nothing type as I want to explore my options for reconstruction.

    Hi,

I am in the Durham area.  You might want to check with Dr. Brian Coan.  I have heard good things about him and his staff.  I plan to consult him when I'm ready for reconstruction.

I highly recommend Dr. Zenn @ Duke. I'm expanding now and they already look great. He is very skilled and does all types of surgies. Added bonus: he has a great bedside manner. Good luck to you!

pancakeheart, What kinds of options does he offer? I have been curious about some of the flaps, although I wondering if I can deal with the recovery.  Also wondering about Direct to implant With AlloDerm.  Also who was your breast surgeon for your mastecomy?

I'm in Raleigh and had my reconstruction with Dr. Blanton at Specialists in Plastic Surgery in Raleigh.

I had my oncology care with Duke Raleigh - Dr. Spiritos.

I received my cancer treatments at UNC-Chapel Hill.  After meeting with several of the UNC plastic surgeons, I decided to travel to Charleston, SC and have my reconstruction with Dr. Craigie and Dr. Kline.  It has been one of the best decisions I have made.  They are the best, and top notch at what they do.  http://www.naturalbreastreconstruction.com/

The teaching hospitals in our area are great, but they are not as up to date with the new procedures.  (My options at UNC were implants, and/or a lat flap).

I do have a friend who used Dr. Zenn, and she has been pleased with her results as well.

I'm in the Raleigh area and Dr. Tolnitch is my BS, Dr. Spiritos is my oncologist and Dr. High at Raleigh Plastic is my PS. I have TE and just had my first fill today but I've been very pleased with Dr. High so far. He takes a lot of time and answers any questions i have. My daughter and husband have both been with me to appointments and he's been great.

I know this is an old thread, but I figured I post anyway. I haven't had my surgery yet, and scheduled for 7/30. My BS is Dr Canale at Carolina Breast Specialists; oncologist is Dr Campbell at Cancer Centers of NC; my PS is Dr Schwarz. So far they're OK! My GYN says they all do good jobs; he was the one who referred me to Dr Canale back in 2005 for my first biopsy.

Lorbgoo, I'd love to hear how your exchange surgery goes. I just had my first fill last week from Dr High. I think I will ask for less cc's next time because it's been painful but I like him a lot. Good luck with your surgery.

I will let you know.  Dr. High filled me with 100 cc each time. I think I had about 5 fills.

My PS is Dr. Clara Lee at UNC-CH.  Haven't had surgery yet but I have felt very confident and comfortable with Dr. Lee so far.   She has been very forthcoming regarding the pros and cons of different procedures and has been very patient and informative while I walk through this decision making process.

My lumpectomy was done by Dr. David Ollila and he will be doing my double mastectomy as well.  He is a very direct communicator and tells it like it is.  I appreciate that.

    :)

Just searched for my MO's name, Spiritos. That's all. I've only met with him once in person, but I like him. BS that performed my biopsy is DiLalla. Her2+; so chemo and antibodies before surgery decision

Good to know, Lorbgoo! I like them both. The only "concern" I have is that the BS has already expressed her "preference" of MX for me after the targeted therapy and chemo, and that was before treatment started. I do not understand why. I know I will get more information along the way to help in the decision (my response to the chemo, genetic testing results, etc...), but it is all so confusing now. I had to look up "TE". Does that occur before all permanent implants? I actually have implants now, submuscular ones. I woner how that plays into things. Oh well, that's all 4 months or so down the road for me

sugar I had expanders put in to expand the skin. She did my mast and dr high did the expanders. Do you know who your PS will be? She dr D gave me a choice of mast or lumpectomy before I had chemo. Onco DX was high as you can read from my signature. If I would of tested positive To genetic test then she would of wanted to do mast good luck everyone I if I'd different

Has anyone on the Raleigh/Durham area had PAP flap reconstruction? Feedback on procedures/recovery and surgeon? As a runner, i am very interested in the effects on leg strength and balance. Thanks

I'm in Chapel Hill but currently getting care elsewhere for various reasons - it remains to be seen where I will get my plastic surgery done. I can't speak to your question right now but I am meeting with a breast surgeon in January and plan to ask various questions like this, and can post feedback then. I need to get my referral going to the plastic surgeon, unfortunately I have to wait until after I talk with the breast surgeon, based on my understanding. I'm fairly certain I'll be having a mastectomy, and don't want the implants under the pec muscle. I am terrified of nerve pain, I am thin and muscular with small breasts. Unfortunately, I feel like the women who have the easiest recovery have more fat than me, or at least larger breasts, based on anecdotal info I've read. Also, I seem to be sensitive to foreign bodies. My sister is one of the 3% who has had problems with a hip replacement. I had terrible pain and problems with a dental implant, and have permanent damage from the surgery. So, I'm also scared of implant disease.

I'm thinking of DIEP or possible prepectoral implants. But if I do DIEP, I don't have enough fat in my abdomen so I would need to take it from elsewhere. Sometimes I feel like a freak of nature.

    Hi Jennenn,

I'm still waiting for my consult with a plastic surgeon - I moved back my breast surgery consult to mid February and am currently working on coordinating a consult with the plastics team on the same day. I'll post any info once I have it.
