Not confident with Diagnosis! Advice Please!!

I'm very attuned to how my breast look so about 2 weeks ago when I noticed my right breast became larger than my left and was itching pretty badly. I made my appointment with my OBGYN. My breasts have always been pretty much proportionate btw. I went to my Dr, he said caffeine can cause swelling which the past month I've quit caffeine and have been drinking water. He didn't know why it was itching. He continues with the exam and finds some "thickening" at the inner part of my right breast so sends me for a mammogram. Go down to have it done, the radiologists doesn't want a mammogram because of my age (25 years old) so they do an ultrasound of just the area he felt the thickening. Calls later and says its normal. That's it, just normal. Nothing seems normal about all of this to me so I call the next day for a second opinion.

Two days later I'm headed for the second opinion. At this point I can really feel the thickening, breast is still larger, nipple is kind of red and my boob just doesn't look like my other. He reads the report from the other dr which said they did an ultrasound on my full breast, which they did not do. He feels the thickening plus some thickening on the outer part of my breast by my arm pit. Says he doesn't know why my breast is larger, thinks the itching is from swapping laundry detergent which I've stated twice I haven't changed in years and says he thinks it's some fibro stuff caused by hormone changes. Says as of now he doesn't see any cause for concern. For some reason I just don't feel completely relieved with this. I would understand the thickening I suppose but I still have no answer for the swelling and other symptoms that lead me there to begin with. I just don't understand how these changes happen quickly and these 2 Drs think it's normal changes!?

    You are your own best advocate. Call your doctor back (the one that scheduled the mammogram). INSIST on having the mammogram. With symptoms, age should NOT be a factor. Your doctor should override the radiologist who changed the order

    Jenn, a friend of mine was diagnosed with triple negative BC at the age of 23. She had a family history and her mother was dx at age 40. Her doctors did not believe her and it took 3 discussions with radiologists before one would do her biopsy. He kept insisting it would be negative. You have to be your own best advocate and insist on testing if you feel something is not right.

    The second Dr told me to just watch the changes my breast makes and when my menstrual cycle is over to do a self breast check in a month. I'm going to do one soon after instead of a month though. Not sure if my regular OB missed the thickening by my armpit or if it somehow appeared in a two day period. The other thing that bothers me is when the lady was taking me to ultrasound she said the tech would look at my right one then my left to compare. She never went to my left breast and the report said she did a complete scan of my right including the nipple and by the armpit. But she didn't! She just took pictures of the area he found. They gave me the disc but of course I have no clue what I'm looking at

    Welcome to BCO JennB20, sorry you needed to be here, but glad you found this forum.

    Do you have a Breast Care Clinic nearby as it sounds like you are not confident in your doctor's opinions. Check around and see if you can obtain a review by specialists in breast problems.

     Hello Jennb80  I feel jst like u im some what in tht current situation I had to go and get a second opinion also becoz the radiologist wanted to do the wait and see game for six months with this  mass tht they found I had already had two mass biopsied(benign) in December of last yr With this third I wanted it to be biopsy to along with a mri. the  dr ended up calling the radiologist he said said tht he would do the order for the biopsy but no need for mri but I would like to have both so I can check both breast in their entirely but im going to ask my gyn for it my thing like everyone else is saying tht u r your best advocate see if someone will write u a order for a mri .  and keeping pushing them so u can get a peace of mind

    The Breast Center is where I went for my ultrasound. I didn't realize until today they had breast Drs there. I always assumed you went from your OB to an Oncologist. I think I will call tomorrow to see if they will see me. I could be overreacting but my mom had cancer and by the time she was diagnosed it was too late and she passed away 6 weeks later. So I would rather be SURE! It's just so strange that this one breast has had these changes in such a short amount of time.

    Jenn - good luck with your call tomorrow. I am sorry about your mom; my mom was diagnosed and passed 9 months later. Moms have a strange way of watching out for us long after they are gone. Yours will be there tomorrow holding your hand. Let us know how things turn out.

    Jenn: I'm so sorry about your mom. Did she have breast cancer or another kind of cancer? I think going to a breast specialist is a good idea, for peace of mind. I am in my 40's now, but have always had fibrocystic breasts that swell/thicken during the month, and is usually one side more than the other. So it could be totally normal, but always best to be certain. I also know that fibrocystic breasts can itch and cause pain. Bottom line is that you should always get checked out if something feels different. I don't even think I found out I had fibrocystic breasts until I was around your age or so, and I just recently found out that I have dense tissue. So don't stress too much, but seeing a specialist who will take your concerns seriously is a good way to go. Good luck to you!!
