The dreaded MRI did not happen

My BS wanted me to have an MRI pre-op to see extent of disease.  I chickened out the first time. So today armed with valium was all prepared to do it.  Saw the whole set up, had no problem with it, then got on the table the way they wanted me to -- on my stomach -- and the pressure on the large muscle below my breasts (I think that's the sternum) was  huge. Lots of pain, then my thigh started to cramp, and then lower back pain -- this after one minute.   They tried to put more padding under me -- didn't help so I got off the table and said I can't do this.   Went out to lunch with my son, had a nice glass of vodka, came home and called my nurse navigator who was happy I tried and said that she will speak with BS and probably they will go ahead and do the lumpectomy without it.  She said because of my distortions being ERpositive and Progesterone positive,  Her2 negative (and the fact that the distortions are small)  and the fact that I am post menopausal is good -- add to that a med after surgery to stop estrogen production will bode me well. I will want to speak to BS also but that's it for now. Will await the next step.  She also added the fact that MRI pre-op is controversial as we know.  Shirl

I remember the MRI being extremely uncomfortable (but not painful) and I got a huge bruise on my ribs from it but I did manage to suck it up and just do it. Glad I did though because they found another suspicious mass in a different location of the same breast. Sorry you couldn't go through with it but at least you tried!

I would love to hear from others who for one reason could not go through the MRI pre-op and how it all turned out. Shirl

At least you tried! I've had about 5 done while on my back. No problem. On my stomach, with my funky screwed up back? Wasn't gonna happen! Didn't either

Thanks for the reply.  Obviously the ones on your back were not for the breast.  At least, I'm thinking so.

Wish I could have gone through with it. But the pain started immediately in my ribs on padded surface and I knew that I could not do 30 mins. of that. Appreciate the feedback
