New Calcium on Mammogram

I am a 63 year old female. I had my yearly screening mammogram in January and was called back due to what I was told today was a new calcium spot in the left breast. A diagnostic mammogram of my left breast was done this afternoon. Less than 5 minutes after I left the xray room I was told I could go home, as the spot was probably not cancer. I was told to come back in 6 months for another mammogram to check the spot. All of this was told to me by a very abrupt woman standing in the tiny dressing room while I was getting dressed. She never looked me in the eye, threw a piece of paper at me, and then walked out.  I don't think she spent even a minute with me, and did not give me any time to ask questions. I looked at the paper after I got to my car. There is a check mark in the box next to "Probably Benign" (not cancer). Recommend a repeat mammogram and/or ultrasound in 6 months...

Am I wrong to think that I would prefer to know that it is benign and NOT cancer, rather than a piece of paper stating probably not cancer? Should I schedule an appointment with my primary care (who is a woman) to discuss a biopsy or is this common just to wait 6 months? Thanks.

Hi, I am sorry. So very sorry that your facility has employed a women that has no empathy for the people she encounters every day. Shame on this person. Clearly, this is not the job for her.I always have my mammos read with a doctor present and he is instructed to come out and discuss the findings. You can do request that to.Your doctor might need to write you a note on their script like patient will wait for results to be read. When you make your appointment, tell them in advance that you will stay and wait for results by the doctor. In regards to the new calcification, I have had that finding many, many times. The radiologist will have you come back to see if those calcifications have changed or if there are more in 6 months. For most people the clacifications haven't changed and it is all fine. The radiologist would have noticed if these microcalcificatins were irregular or clustered, which is probably why you are on the 6 month schedule. I would definitely go back to your doctor and ask him/her to explain it to you. If you already go to a breast health facility they will explain everything to you. I hope you had a good evening.
