Concernedhubbyalan- I am so sorry you and your wife are going through this. My sweet husband has been by my side all along and it has been so comforting. This will only bring you closer as a couple. We had some big plans for ourselves too and then breast cancer came along. Keep being the amazing husband you are! I hope she heals quickly.

I had my BMX on the 14th of January with TE installed at the same time. My surgery was planned for 40 days so the first 5 weeks it was easy to ignore. I decided just before Christmas that my"soon to expire" breasts should get to experience a farewell tour, much like sports stars get. We visited Philly, Iowa, Missouri and my final weekend before surgery I went to Florida. I had some great friends that helped keep my mind off my surgery. We even made a bust of my bust. I was never uneasy or unsure of my choice but definitely was ready for it to be over with,
I have had those days where I felt invincible and paid for it the next day but now I'm mildly concerned that I should be able to back away from pain pills and just go to OTC. I know everyone's mileage will vary but I'm just hoping that I'm normal and not a wimp. I'm also blessed that my PS doesn't feel we need to add anymore Volume to my TE's. Now, it's a 3 month wait for my new girls.
Oncology appointment is Tuesday, ready for that day to be past as well and know what else just got dished up for me.
I have also been blessed beyond measure by a husband that never left my side except while I was in surgery. He slept in the lovely recliners and handled all of my drain draining and showered me the first week.
Oh, I was also fortunate enough to have nipple and aereola sparring surgery.
Guess I drifted all over, I apologize. My big questions:
How long did your pain stay at the level that OTC didn't manage?
Good luck to everyone with surgeries, God Bless us all
Lora

I know I'm technically a Feb surgery, but I've been here all month as I was supposed to be a Jan one....Anyway, I am finally having my surgery on Tuesday. Tomorrow I'm off to buy a recliner and do any last minute stuff. I'm feeling OK about the surgery...just want it over and want clear nodes...

Closer? Maybe not after tonight. I owe her 50 dollars now. Thanks for nothing, Seahawks.
All kidding and gambling debts aside, the time we have spent together trapped in hospital rooms has been really cool. I thought after 10 years of marriage I knew everything about her, but I was wrong. She's also a master card counter. When she was up to it, we played Gin Rummy and she beat me like a rented mule every game. After the fourth loss in a row, my DW admitted she can count cards.
After this was all over with, we planned on going to France and Italy. I'm thinking Vegas now.

Hello Ladies,
I had my BMX Feb 6th. I came home on the7th and was alone the first night. I had 3 drains. I went back to work this last week. There are a lot of challenges after surgery for some of us, I had an area that wasn't healing because of radiation in 1995 for breast cancer, this was a reoccurrence after 20 yrs for me, it is still healing. I thought the pain would be gone by now but it isn't. So I went back to work, still healing but in pain, but I am doing it. I had to wait a month for my surgery because they wanted a breast MRI and bone scan before surgery. The positive thing is I had breast cancer in the good breast 7 mm that the MRI picked up. It is very difficult to wait, I had a real problem with that so I understand, but you will get to the surgery and then start this journey so hang in there. I still have the pain in my chest, so dealing with that, it doesn't always resolve in 3 weeks. We all understand each others hearts and support each other, that's what counts. It helps get us through the unknowns.
-
justamy- Good luck on your surgery. I'll send positive and healing thoughts your way.

Good Morning from Sunny AZ! Just wanted to let you know that my surgery for left MX and Extender was a success on 1/27 and I have been told I am officially cancer free!! I do have t admit the pain afterwards was a bit overwhelming to me. My advice to all...stay ahead of the pain and you will be just fine. 5 to 6 days post op I am finally able to feel a little normal. I am able to do some light things around the house, but I do not want to over due it. The drain is working out just fine and I am hoping it will be taken out on my next Dr. visit on Wednesday. Without this board, I would not know what to expect or how to handle...a big shout out to all to say thank you thank you!
-
To all the women who were discussing the sensitivity around scar areas from drains and node removal site..I had and still have that problem. I still cant stand anything touching those areas. It's almost painful but hesitate to call it that. I hope it goes away !
-
KjAgent- Congrats on being cancer free! My BMX and TE placement was on 1/20 and it just gets better as the days go by. Keep on healing!
-
6 days after surgery. Pain level 2 out of 10. Starting to reduce all meds. 2 drains. At home. Kids at school. And all of a sudden uncontrolled cry. For few minutes. I knew it should be expected but still very emotional. Boobs look good and almost no limitation in motion. Waiting for pathology to come back. Sending big hug to all of you!
-
Thank you so much Trailrose....I needed to hear that! Have an amazing day! -
I'm about 3.5 weeks out from my MX (but no TE yet) and I don't even really think about taking anything for pain. The area gets a little sensitive as the day wears on, but it isn't painful per se. I have one spot that still hurts a bit and will ask my surgeon this Thursday if that's normal or not. I imagine it is. Overall, though, I feel better and better each day.

I hear you. I did the same. The decisions we had to make, the stress, drugs, the damage to our bodies... It's quite a change and a brutal loss. We have to find our new normal and I am seeing that it's true, time does heal all wounds. It's ok to cry.
-
Shelly1974....loved your post and yes, it is okay to cry and so good to know that you are one of us...normal! Just what horsemom said...she is right!
-
Good Luck Justamy and keep us posted! Lucky you ... you get a recliner with built in channel changer and water & pill bottle holders!Concernedhubbyallen....love your story and thanks for sharing!!
-
KjAgent -- congrats on being cancer free! I'm three weeks past my lumpectomy and ALND, and my right armpit area is still recovering. After driving the kids to and from school, to and from work, and doing my job, I feel like my arm is ready to fall off. My sons go to bed between 8:00 and 8:30 pm, and I'm not far behind them.....
-
12 days post-op from PBMX and direct implants/fat grafting and just returned home from having both drains removed.......aaaaahhhhhh HEAVEN! It didn't hurt one bit and I feel so free!!!!!! Now I have to remind myself to not over-do it!!!! So hard when I am so used to be superwoman all day! I know you can all relate. Hope everyone is doing well!

Just came back to the hospital after feeding our feline children. Lucky for me and my wallet, Diamond Jen is asleep. When I go back to work on the 16th, I guess it will be ramen, ramen, and more ramen for lunch. The lady doesn't take IOU's.
Anyway, the wound care specialist took a look at her reconstructed right breast and said the will need surgical debridement in addition to the lavage therapy he ordered. We both told the PS that under no circumstances would we try another reconstruction. If it has to b removed, fine. (My DW says she'll be the only person she knows of to have a trilateral mastectomy--she somehow retained a sense of humor through this.) She'll wear a prosthetic temporarily until she finishes her cancer treatment. The oncololgist told her it could wait, but she wants get this over with ASAP.
-
I had my surgery on the 30th. I'm really not liking the staples in my armpit after lymph node removal. Any tips to make that part comfortable? I'm propping my arm up in hopes it doesn't rub, but it only works sometimes.
-
To all the ladies who have posted, post op. Thanks so much. I am scheduled for ALND left side on February 12 and it helps to have an idea of what to expect. BTW, if anyone is starting rads, how long after surgery and how long till you could raise your arm? Love, Jean
-
Jean,
I had ALND on 1/12 (three weeks ago), and I'm still working on raising my arm above my head. I was given a brochure with exercises to do at home, but have had some domestic crises distract me from doing them. I, also, have to start rads soon. So, I'd better get to work on my exercises! By the way, my surgeon said he'd write me a prescription for physical therapy if I found them too difficult to do on my own.
-
Jean, my RO wanted me to wait at least 4 weeks after surgery before starting rads. I had surgery on 1/9 and will get a CT scan tomorrow (2/4) so that he can start the simulation.
-
Mrs. Tee and Ms. Math I am thinking about both of you as your surgeries coincided with mine - Jan 30. I had a BMX, went well, fainted when getting to use bathroom, nausea, and overall exhausted. Finally at home, and visiting nurse came to visit. Husband, Mom, kids have been amazing. Still anxious to hear results from pathology. For now focusing on healing. I asked to change pain meds due to nausea.Take care you two...If I was closer, and NOT also in the same position, I would definitely come out to drive you to wherever you needed and make warm meals.
And for the other women here, good luck with healing and coming into your own.
For those about to have surgery, please know that the rest of us have walked before you....we are here for you
At 3 days post surgery, I am a bit miserable and in pain now, but I will get out of this phase shortly.
-
Great note Positive_Spirit! I did not start feeling better until a week post op as that is when I went pain free. However, the extenders still give me grief, but I am sure hoping that changes in time. I can hardly walk for long periods of time before they start to hurt and reading some post...that might be normal. I want the real norma back...as well as the others. Hang in there everyone!
-
trailrose I took your advice on my own towel just to make sure and glad I did.
Positive_spirit Yes, have lots of support from friends, in person, by phone, by email and on facebook.

followed up w/onc and surgeon today said mom had 100% response to chemo yeah. took drains out mom was super happy about that. got script to f/u with pt and to get a compression sleeve.
-
May you dear ladies feel the peace of His presence today. This morning I am grateful for daylight. Also for dear hubby sleeping beside me. The snowcovered woods look so beautiful as I watch the birds feeding at the back deck. God has truly put us in a gorgeous place for our senior years. (I was up around 4am stressing about next week's surgery and if I will clear this cancer.) Love, Jean
-
Jmo06 -- Great news about your Mom!
zjrosenthal (Jean) -- Thanks for the inspirational thoughts! I was up at 4:00 am, too, but worried about one of my sons who has autism (his meds are a mess). We all have our burdens to carry -- hope you can find some peace of mind regarding your surgery.
-
thank you all for your prayers and well wishes. My BMX went as planned. the doctor had to remove six lymph nodes because they all reacted to the dye. I am very sore today and and taking Oxy to help with the pain .I didn't realize my breast surgeon was going to put my TEs under my armpit. Now I look completely flat with big bulging armpits.I now and waiting for the nurses to get their paperwork together so I can get out of here.I will see but my breast surgeon and my plastic surgeon next week so we will see what happens then. Talk to you all later
hugs amy
PS. That nipple injection is indeed one of the worst parts of the surgery.
